Color Pie Break

Psionic Blast is a pretty bad color pie break.

It is.

Psionic Magic Colors

New 30 Oct 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 48 Comments

In general psychic magic falls into Blue color pie...even the breaks Psionic Blast, Psychic Purge, Psychic Allergy, Telepathy, Telekinesis( what a wasted card name) with the occasional shift into Black Psychic Spear, until you hit Pyrokinesis being Red. Cpuld you see psychic magic/powers across all colors?

I could imagine a psionic themed set where we spread it across all five colors. In a vacuum, it’s pretty blue.

Color Breaks and Banning

New 13 Jun 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 30 Comments

If any of the color breaks on the timeshifted sheet became a big part of Modern metagame would those cards likely see a ban, i.e. if a Blue deck dominated due to Psionic Blast?

We’ve never banned a card due to color pie break.

Suggesting Color Pie Article

Suggestion for article/dtw: The inertia in the color pie or design in general caused by e.g. demonic tutor and times it was broken e.g. psionic blast

I’ll add it to the short list. : )

Color Pie Establishment

New 16 Feb 2020 Asked by szwanger 49 Comments

What year or block would you say the color pie was first well-established? That is, a point when cards like Psionic Blast and Desert Twister were clearly violations.

Cleaning up the color pie was something I took on as a project when I started in 1995. It was a slow ramp up for the first few years. I think Odyssey/Onslaught was around the time that it got to a mostly stable state.

Blue Psychic Damage

New 11 May 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 31 Comments

Psionic blast, psionic entity, psionic gift, psionic sliver, psychic venom, psychic purge, psychic barrier, psychic allergy, mind bomb, are all examples of blue using psychic for damage. Are any of these still available to blue under current color pir restrictions?

No. Blue no longer gets direct damage in its slice of the color pie. It’s still able to flavor things as psionic if used on an ability blue can do.

Blue and Psionic Blast

New 10 May 2019 Asked by hedronsifter 22 Comments

You said "Direct damage" is non-blue 'barring weird shenanigans'... would you consider Psionic Blast to be a 'weird shenanigan'? Because an answer to an ask recenty indicated that psionic abikities were inherently blue.

Psionic abilities such as telekinesis are blue. Blue hasn’t done direct damage in many, many years.

Blue's Historical Capabilities

New 10 May 2019 Asked by nutsofoden 29 Comments

There are a few on your non-Blue list that actually do have have cards. That being said, I think Blue is just fine and most of these cards are older and oddball anyways, just figured I would point some out. Direct Damge is Psionic Blast. Life gain is Relic Bind/Merchant Ship and few other more niche spells. Creature Destruction is Frozen Solid/Dwindle. Land searching is Dreamscape Artist and technically Mana Severance. Damage prevention is Cephalid Illusionist/Energy Field and a few others.

I was talking modern color pie. Magic’s past is filled with things the color shouldn’t have done (or was in color pie at the time).

Color Pie Philosophy

New 23 Mar 2018 Asked by coldlikehell 23 Comments

Is it fair to say that color pie breaks and bends follow on the lines of flavor and mechanics separately? It seems to me that Chaos Warp is a mechanical color pie break but not a flavor one, whereas Psionic Blast would be both a flavor and mechanical break.

I do think there are flavor breaks. I’m not sure Psionic Blast is one though. It could tap and lock down some number of creatures.

GDS Design Philosophy

New 08 Dec 2017 Asked by ionlymadethistoaskmaroquestions 21 Comments

During the GDS, if a question pertains to effect given to colors in the color pie, will it specify whether it wants new world order designs or not? I'm assuming you wouldn't fit a psionic blast question in there to confuse anybody

I would be talking about the modern color pie.

Psionic Blast Color Shift

Could Psionic Blast be Black nowadays?

No, it would be red. And we’ve made that card.

Psionic Blast's Color Pie

New 19 Oct 2017 Asked by fl0atwithme 22 Comments

Is Psionic Blast too much of a break to be reprinted or is it possible? I love it's flavor so much and would like to see it in a new frame not promo.

It’s not in blue’s color pie.

Blue's Color Pie Breaks

Are there any Blue cards you consider color pie breaks?

A whole bunch of them. Psionic Blast and Frozen in Ice are the first two to pop into my mind.

Color Pie Adjustments

New 30 Oct 2015 Asked by extremeconsiderationthemovie 20 Comments

Flashback: Do you ever think Tim and Psionic Blast should be a red cards?

1995 Mark: Psionic Blast makes a lot of sense. I’m not sure about Tim.

Purple Psionic Blast

New 26 Sep 2015 Asked by biospark88 44 Comments

Could Psionic Blast be reprinted in purple?

Assuming Purple is the “sixth color”, it can do whatever we define it to do.

Color Pie Bleeds

New 21 Nov 2014 Asked by trifas 13 Comments

Were Psionic Blast and Prodigal Sorcerer born as color pie bleeds or was this something ok for Blue back in these days?

Back in the day, blue had limited access to small amounts of direct damage. That didn’t last too long although the “Tim” ability lasted the longest.

Cube Balance Concerns

New 04 Oct 2014 Asked by jainmor 17 Comments

A good friend of mine is making a cube, and he is including psionic blast. I objected because blue shouldn't have that affect. What should I say to convince him that it will be bad for the environment? Thanks : )

In cube, you get to make your own color pie to some extent, but you have to be careful that one color doesn’t usurp another. If Psionic Blast allows people to not have to leave blue to deal with certain problems, it may make for a unbalanced environment.

Color Pie Philosophy

New 05 Aug 2014 Asked by gonzoron 27 Comments

It seems that there are two ways to do the color pie: Either colors can't have certain things, or they can only have those things if they are really bad. You seem to favor the former, but is there room for the latter at all? I miss cards like Unyaro Bee Sting, Psionic Blast, and Gate to Phyerexia, where the color's weakness is shown by how inefficient the card is, compared to the same card in the "proper" color or by extra hoops or drawbacks. Is there room for that kind of card nowadays?

Most players are very bad at recognizing card power so it does a poor job of communicating weakness. Also, even weak versions see play keeping the color from having to look to other colors to fill in its weakness (which is a big part of why colors have weaknesses in the first place). Hornet Sting, as an example, saw tournament play.

MaRo, all this talk of color pie breaking reminds me of psionic blast, who designed that?

Richard Garfield.

Psionic Blast Duality

New 29 Jun 2012 Asked by mrwilsonuk 3 Comments

What's your opinion on the time Psionic Blast was included on the timeshifted sheet from Time Spiral? A funny look at some of the strange things that were printed in Magic's past, or a confusing message about blue's color pie?

Both.
