Card Ability Request

I would like to request a white card with the rat colony / slime against humanity / dragons approach / persistent petitioners ability.

It will happen eventually.

Mechanics and Intended Features

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by blaze-1013 57 Comments

Changing exert to stun counters would be a large change since it stops working with untap effects and being able to use those, such as Vizier of Tumbling Sands, is an intended feature of the mechanic. Same is true of persist/undying using finality. It is a feature, not a bug, that you can sac a persist/undying creature twice, reanimate it, then do it twice more. Also, changing old effects to use scry or surveil was largely a buff and these changes would be nerfs which generally upsets players.

Fine points.

Finality Counters Usage

Could Finality counters be used for a persistent variant?

I assume you mean a persist variant. Yes, it could.

DFC Abilities

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by luis-de-lis 21 Comments

Are abilities like Undying, Persist and others with effects like "when this creature dies, return it to the battlefield" possible on the back side of DFCs? And if so, which side would the card be returned on? BTW, Drive to Work is the best! It makes me feel like I've got a pal commuting with me every day. Thank you for letting us listeners hitchike with you on your way to work! :)

Without the card stating otherwise, it would return to the battlefield on the front face. Glad you enjoy the podcast.

Wither Mechanic Scale

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by arborealoctopodes 20 Comments

Hello! I found out about Wither while building my first commander deck (W/R dwarven tribal under Depala, Pilot Exemplar.) and I was curious where Wither is on the Storm scale?
Hope you have an excellent day!

Wither requires -1/-1 counters, so like persist, its return is dependent on a set using -1/-1 counters.

Persist in Standard

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by dazedanarchist1312 20 Comments

Where's persist on the storm scale? It seems to me that would be a very hard card to mechanic to put into standard because +1/+1 counters are such a common theme. For example, Tribute to the World Tree is in standard right now and could easily be part of a combo with many persist creatures.

Persist needing -1/-1 counters makes it return, at least in a premier set, less likely, but not impossible. I’ll call it a 7.

Mechanics Combination

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by thunderweb 32 Comments

Can similar mechanics be put into a card (or a set) together?(e.g. "first strike and double strike", "flying and reach", "hexproof and ward", "undying and persist", or "infect, poisonous, and toxic")

We tend not to include them on the same card, but definitely will use them in the same set.

Persist Mechanic Future

Outside of Modern Horizons, what is the most likely product for persist (or -1/-1s at all) to make an appearance?

A Commander deck.

-1/-1 Counters Future

New 04 Jul 2023 Asked by zorroaburrito 25 Comments

Where could we possibly see new -1/-1 counter cards? Modern Horizons? Commander Legends? Could a JMP pack use them? Can they show up in a set's Commander decks even if they're not in the set? (Sorry for the long-winded question; I just miss persist)

Supplemental sets are the most likely place.

Persist Keyword Cycle

New 27 Nov 2022 Asked by elchuppalibre 27 Comments

I love "Persist" from MH2! It makes me imagine a cool super cycle of cards based on Keywords. Can a I get an If or a When the possibility?

If on a cycle, but when on more individual cards, most likely in future Modern Horizons sets.

Persist vs. Undying

New 11 Aug 2022 Asked by strangecards 43 Comments

You answered earlier that Persist is a better mechanic than Undying. How come? Does the growth in Undying make it tougher to cost? Does the shrinking factor of Persist make it better in play design, even though -1/-1 counters arent favored anymore?

The creature shrinking plays better than growing. Undying creatures are very hard to cost.

Persist vs Undying

Which do you prefer: Persist or Undying?

Persist is the better mechanic, but harder to reuse as R&D is soured on environments with -1/-1 counters.

Trivia: Undying Mechanic

New 28 Apr 2022 Asked by fractalwasp 91 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my birthday today, and I was hoping for some trivia about the Undying mechanic. I started playing during the original Innistrad Block and it's always held a special place in my heart.

Sometimes I’ll bounce ideas off my wife. She’s played Magic, but isn’t super well versed in all the finer details. I told her I was trying to find a mechanic that represented a monster seeming like it dies and then returning not dead. She asked if there was any mechanic that Magic had done that captured that feeling. I said yes, there was a mechanic called persist that captured it perfectly. Then just use that she said.I said I couldn’t because the set wasn’t using -1/-1 counters and persist used those counters. What counters did the set have? +1/+1 I said. And then it hit me. Just do persist with +1/+1 counters. I thanked my wife for helping me, and she was like “How did I help you? I didn’t suggest anything.” : )Happy Birthday!

Cancellation of Counters Handling

New 09 Mar 2022 Asked by djscrub 30 Comments

Re: cancellation of +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters, I think the question is more whether you would let a black bordered card play directly with this interaction. Something like a creature with Outlast and Persist. This is a commonly requested type of mix-and-match card that you guys seem to have intentionally avoided. Can I ask if or when?

If. The problem with a set that heavily used both is that it would be very hard to tell board state. At bare minimum, it would require punch out counters to mark them.

Startled Awake Card Analysis

New 14 Feb 2022 Asked by livefromtheloam 35 Comments

"TDFCs have to be permanents and split cards can’t be permanents." Startled Awake // Persistent Nightmare was one of my favorite Shadows over Innistrad cards. =)

Fair. I guess the front could be a spell.

Basic Supertype Consideration

New 09 Feb 2022 Asked by armadagon 41 Comments

Mark, was there ever any consideration to giving the "You can play any number of " cards like Persistent Petitioners, Relentless Rats, and Dragon's Approach the Basic supertype, then expanding the rule that lets you play any number of copies of a Basic Land in your deck to include any card with the Basic supertype? It would allow you to save a line of rules text for these kinds of cards.

But it causes different issues. Basic means other things than “you can play more than four”.

New 04 Oct 2021 Asked by rolscane 30 Comments

-1/-1 and +1/+1 cause problems only when undying and persist are around, right? So what's keeping you from printing both counters on a Premier Set? It's not like Undying or Persist are ever coming back to Standard, right? And for eternal formats... well they already live with -1/-1 and +1/+1 counters.

We don’t mix them in premier sets because we want players in limited environments, where they’re less familiar with all the cards, to be able to see a creature with counters on it and know how big it is.

Trivia about Dark Ascension

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by havensglow-reblogs 90 Comments

Yesterday was my birthday! Can I get some trivia about my favorite set, Dark Ascension?

I’ve led forty something sets and the only small winter set I ever led was Dark Ascension. I did it because I want Ken Nagle to lead his first large set and a return to a known world (Ravnica) seemed like the right spot. My favorite design story from the set was I was trying to find a cool monster mechanic and was talking with my wife about it, venting my frustration. I really wanted to use persist because monsters have a whole trope of coming back after you think they’re dead, but the set used +1/+1 counters instead of -1/-1 counters. My wife said, “Why can’t you use +1/+1 counters?” And I’m like, “I can!” and undying was born.Happy Birthday!

Keyword Counters in Future Sets

New 21 Feb 2021 Asked by themartiangeek 90 Comments

I'd like to see keyword counters in a set that has access to non-evergreen keywords. Persist counters? Skulk counters?

That’s an interesting note for a future Modern Horizons set.

Color Access to Copy Mechanics

New 03 Jan 2021 Asked by dch52 36 Comments

Are rat/persistent petitioners effects specific to black/blue in the color pie, or is it primarily/exclusively a flavor decision?

Any color is allowed access to “you may have as many copies of this in a deck”.
