Remembering a Loved One

New 29 Apr 2024 Asked by mikecarlucci 20 Comments

Mark, wonderful podcast tribute to your dad. I’ve been playing since 1997 and have heard so many of your stories about him and have even shared your Tempest design story when brining friends into the game because it’s so passionate. So sorry for your loss.

Thanks. I’m glad you liked it.

Commemorating a Father's Legacy

Thanks.

Comfort in Grieving

New 27 Apr 2024 Asked by resting-meme-face 59 Comments

I just listened to your podcast on your father today. My father passed away due to complications from Alzheimer's in December. Your podcast really helped me. Losing a parent is so difficult, but thinking about my father's life in terms of the lives of others and that whole "It's a Wonderful Life" tribute has helped my grieving by some measure. Thank you for this episode and for sharing, and may your father's memory be a blessing.

I’m glad it was helpful. My mother, who’s a psychologist, said something that helped me quite a bit. Grief, she said, is an expression of love.

Tempest Block Tribute

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by ultwarrior 33 Comments

I know I can't share it with you but I am currently working on a project that's a love letter to Tempest block and the aesthetic of Magic at that time. As Tempest's lead designer, what do you feel are some core aspects of the block that a tribute shouldn't leave out?

I would try to capture the mechanics, including the unnamed ones, and the story.

Persist in Standard

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by dazedanarchist1312 20 Comments

Where's persist on the storm scale? It seems to me that would be a very hard card to mechanic to put into standard because +1/+1 counters are such a common theme. For example, Tribute to the World Tree is in standard right now and could easily be part of a combo with many persist creatures.

Persist needing -1/-1 counters makes it return, at least in a premier set, less likely, but not impossible. I’ll call it a 7.

Are Gate to Phyrexia and Phyrexian Tribute considered mistakes in today's world?

Yes.

Completion of Mage Vertical Cycle

New 28 Mar 2022 Asked by evscfa1 44 Comments

If or when: completing the Trinket, Tribute, Trophy, and Treasure Mage vertical cycle? We are missing two still. 4 MV and 5 MV, as Trinket handles 1 or less, and Treasure handles 6 or greater.

We’ll get there.

Tribute to Mind Rot

New 31 Oct 2021 Asked by eschatologue-deactivated2023090 65 Comments

hey mark, we're currently in the first Standard environment not to include Mind Rot in 20 years, could you say a few kind words for its passing?

Mind Rot, no one denied a hand quote like you. : )

Origins of Barrin's Name

Was Barrin named as a tribute to Barry Reich?

Not that I’m aware of, but maybe.

Phyrexian Tribute Flavor Text

New 08 May 2021 Asked by wextalks 45 Comments

Phyrexian Tribute has flavor text quoting "Tales" by Afari, seemingly in support of Phyrexia. Was Afari a Phyrexian agent, or am I misreading this?

I don’t know. Anyone know the answer?

Artifact Destruction Color Pie Query

New 02 Mar 2021 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 67 Comments

Is Phyrexian Tribute within modern color pie? Where/how does black destroy artifacts if at all?

Black is not supposed to be able to destroy artifacts. It’s one of the weaknesses of black.

Ajani Trivia Request

After Elspeth died, Ajani wore her cloak in tribute. Happy Birthday!

Tribute Acknowledgment

New 28 Nov 2019 Asked by oscuritaforze 57 Comments

This is a little late, but can you give firm, Gideon-style shoulder claps to the people responsible for Signature Spellbook: Gideon? Regardless of opinions on what happened to Gideon in War of the Spark, I liked that tribute to the character.

Can do.

Red's Worship Effect

New 14 Jul 2019 Asked by suigenyukiouji 22 Comments

Can red ever do the Worship effect on a creature again? (Ali from Cairo and Fortune Thief are the two existent cards) It sort of fits into red's 'living on the edge of loss' theme that the red extra turn cards have.

The two cards you’re referencing are a card from early Magic before the color pie had solidified and a Time Spiral card referencing it as a tribute to the game’s past. The ability has never actually been in red’s slice of the color pie.

T Word Series

Trinket, Treasure, Trophy, Tribute... do you have enough words to do the full cycle?

The English language has a lot of “T” words.

Secret Lair's Infernal Tribute

New 15 Feb 2019 Asked by wasteofzerosandones 21 Comments

Unrules question: with R&D's Secret Lair in play, does Infernal Tribute allow me to sacrifice other players' permanents in addition to my own?

No, the rules only allow you to sacrifice cards you control.

Holiday Break Explanation

New 20 Dec 2018 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 27 Comments

"My article, which you obviously haven’t seen yet, states this very clearly." Why did you not get an article this week? WOTC keeps telling us that they want us to see previews with the proper context, and right now Adapt and Riot looks like slight tweaks on Monstrosity and Tribute, and we have no idea why you are confusing us with new wording.

In order to get a holiday break, I’m given a few weeks off from writing articles. While I do love writing about Magic, I also love getting a much needed vacation.

Internal Tribute Errata

New 11 Oct 2018 Asked by abelzumi 38 Comments

Why is Internal Tribute errata'd to say "nontoken permanent" instead of just "permanent?"

Because the original text said “card”. The Oracle text is staying true to the original design which didn’t let you sacrifice permanents that weren’t cards (and back then token cards weren’t a regular thing).

Headless Horseman Idea

New 12 Jun 2018 Asked by alzharade 48 Comments

I heard a rumor once that the Headless Horsemen (a creature based off the novel, anyway) was meant to make a appearance somewhere in Innistrad or Shadows Over Innistrad, a new creature rather than a reprint of the lovely fellow from Legends. Was this a thing, and is there any possibility of a legendary Headless Horsemen tribute down the line? Mono black if you could manage it.

Headless Horseman was in the Innistrad file for a while. He proved to be a little too weak.

Dominaria's Popularity

New 23 Apr 2018 Asked by razanur37 79 Comments

Anecdotally, it seems like Dominaria is far more popular than some other recent sets. Is this something you're noticing as well?

It’s an emotional tribute during the game’s 25th anniversary. It was designed to stand out,
