Oubliette Effect for Blue

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by jimharbor 28 Comments

Could Mono blue get the Oubliette effect? (An enchantment that says "When this enters, target creature phases out until this leaves the battlefield.) I know white can get it. But can blue get it as well?

No, but it can turn a creature into a different creature, like a 1/1 with no abilities.

Oubliette Errata Reason

New 04 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 29 Comments

Why was oubliette errata’d to phase the creature out, but tawnos’s coffin still has that really long wording?

Oubliette got reprinted, and the change was made then.

Transform vs. Flip Cards

New 23 Apr 2023 Asked by iamhighwayman 25 Comments

Any chance that the 20 flip cards from Kamigawa could be errata'd to transform? I know 'flip' is a different mechanic, but it could be exactly substituted by transform (treating upside down as back-to-front), and wizards have done this kind of thing before for protoversions of future abilities (oubliette, consecrate land). It would clean up the same action word 'flip' as is used by coins and 'chaos orb' cards, and bring 20 cards into the transformverse. Plus, what gorgeous reprints they'd be!

It’s functional errata that we’ve chosen not to do.

Complexity of Banding Mechanic

Hi Mark! Now that phasing is back and oubliette reprinted has anyone tried to make Banding work?

Banding is significantly more complex than phasing.

Oubliette and Tawnos's Coffin Differences

New 20 Feb 2021 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 61 Comments

Why was Oubliette given functional errata to use phasing, while Tawnos's Coffin, which had identical wording, was left unchanged? Is this just a matter of wanting to simplify Oubliette so it could be reprinted while Coffin will never be reprinted anyway?

That’s a good guess.

Oubliette Reprint Coincidence

New 10 Aug 2020 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 57 Comments

is it just a coincidence that oubliette was finally reprinted alongside the only other card (mystic gate) in magic's history which features the word oubliette??

I like to think of it as a oubliette mini theme. : )

Oubliette Phasing and Tawnos's Coffin

New 10 Aug 2020 Asked by zennistrad 29 Comments

Is there a reason Tawnos's Coffin didn't also get errata'd to use phasing like Oubliette?

Yes. The card works as templated. Oubliette was changed to fit on a card so we could reprint it.

Black Color Question

New 30 Jul 2020 Asked by gus-goose 89 Comments

Is black now secondary in Oubliette-style effects with phrasing replacing exile in oblivion ring effects? Or is this a one time thing?

A reprint of Oubliette, a card from 26 years ago, is not a precedent for anything.

Tawnos's Coffin Errata

New 29 Jul 2020 Asked by sniffnoy 31 Comments

So if Oubliette is getting errata'd, does that mean Tawnos's Coffin will be too?

There are no current plans to errata Tawnos’s Coffin.

About Oubliette Reprint

New 29 Jun 2020 Asked by syzygymtg 60 Comments

With the phasing experiment are we likely to finally see an Oubliette reprint or even a functional reprint (maybe not in black)? Seems like a fun o ring variant for a set which has access to phasing.

We have stated that Oubliette is getting reprinted in 2020.

Challenge of Reprinting Oubliette

New 12 Apr 2020 Asked by robotface 52 Comments

If the main challenge of reprinting Oubliette is its oracle text, wouldn't the mystery boosters have been the perfect place to reprint it without needing to deal with that?

Mystery Booster was straight pick-up and I’m skeptical we have the Arabian Nights original files.

Oubliette Reprint Topic

New 13 Nov 2019 Asked by callmearas 51 Comments

You and other R&D members keep saying you can't reprint Oubliette, a high in demand reprint, because the Oracle text is a problem, then a set comes around where you could print cards exactly as first printed skirting around the entire problem, and it still isn't reprinted. Did know one think about it? Was it rejected it for balance reasons?

There are some boring technical reasons why it wasn’t possible, but I promise we haven’t forgotten about the player desire for Oubliette.

Oubliette Reprint Text

New 30 Jul 2019 Asked by gophilipbowles 46 Comments

If Oubliette is reprinted in a supplemental product, would it matter much if it uses the Arabian Nights wording even if this isn't quite the way the card currently works, rather than trying to make the wording consistent with the Oracle text? The card already exists in that form and is functional, with the intent of the wording understood by those who play and play against it. I can see a problem in a Standard set, but less so in one aimed at enfranchised players.

We don’t print cards with outdated rules text.

Hopefully when, but we have to find rules text that fits on the card,

Complex Text Solutions

New 31 May 2019 Asked by ikenbon-deactivated20190717 46 Comments

In the case of Oubliette or something like Chains of Mephistopheles where the wording of the card literally can't fit on a modern magic card... have you have considered creating an evergreen keyword that just means, "refer to the oracle text" or just "read the rules somewhere other than the card".

We haven’t crossed that line yet. Well, at least in black border.

Oubliette Reprint Decision

New 31 May 2019 Asked by jablodg-blog 38 Comments

MH1 knocked it out of the park! Surprised no reprint of Oubliette. Was this ever in consideration?

Editing’s current template of it doesn’t currently fit on the card, so no.

Oubliette Translation Issues

New 26 May 2019 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 42 Comments

Wasn't translation an issue with Oubliette? I thought the reason that it was so hard to reprint is that the text won't even fit on the card when translated to German.

It currently won’t fit on a card in English.

Oubliette Design Review

New 27 Mar 2019 Asked by per-mariam-ad-jesum 38 Comments

Why exactly is Oubliette considered a break?

Oubliette is more bend than break, but it definitely steers into an area we’ve moved away from flavorfully. White’s the one that tries not to kill if it can help it. Killing is kind of black’s thing.

Oblivion Ring Proposal

New 27 Mar 2019 Asked by spwndlove 41 Comments

Would it be completely out of the question to print an Oblivion Ring with 1BB mana cost at common to appease Pauper players who want an Oubliette reprint (which won't currently fit on a paper card)? Or is printing a new break not justified by the desire to reprint an old break?

It’s not our policy to break color pie to replicate old cards with new versions.

Oubliette Reprint Potential

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by annorax 28 Comments

Assuming there's a template for Oubliette that'd fit on a card (Skullbriar counter-retention template would save enough space that the whole thing fits on a card & isn't a relevant functional change), would it be reprintable? Would there be any kind of supplemental product other than Commander that you'd be comfortable seeing it get reprinted in?

There are various supplemental sets that I could see it working in. A reprint product like Masters or ones like Conspiracy or Battlebond that have a reprint component all seem like they could work.
