Oath of the Gatewatch

Color Coding Changes

New 05 May 2024 Asked by jimreviewsthickshakes-blog 23 Comments

Hey mark! I enjoyed your alphabet podcast, but I might have another one for you. When guilds of Ravnica came out, R&D referred to the nightveil predator cycle of cards as costing CCDD. Does that give you an entry for D?

D moved to N when C moved to M. Now the translated version of that sentence. We used to use C to mean any colored mana, so if we were making a tight cycle (all the cards have the same mana value) where all the costs cost two generic mana and one colored mana, we’d write it as 2C. If we were making a cycle of two-colored multicolor cards, we’d use D for the second color. For example, if it was a tight cycle with two generic mana and one of two different colored mana, we’d write it as 2CD.But then Oath of the Gatewatch came out and we introduced colorless mana in costs. We needed a letter for that, so we used C for colorless. That meant we had to change the old usage of C as it would make a cost of 2C ambiguous. We changed from C to M to mean any colored mana. When we changed it to M, we changed the secondary color to N as N follows M like D followed C.

Colorless EDH Themes

New 14 Feb 2024 Asked by prime-phi 33 Comments

Hi Mark, I saw a video recently making fun of colorless edh decks only having two themes: artifacts or eldrazi (And also Omarthis I guess, who was an interesting addition) . What is the likelihood of more colorless themes/archetypes/strategies to spice up edh or standard, like the eldrazi were? It seems like a waste (get it) to put the colorless mana symbol on every colorless producer but never reuse it since its introduction in ogw.

I’m sure we’ll find other themes for colorless, but it’ll happen slowly.

Premier Sets & Teammates

New 20 Sep 2023 Asked by graymerchantsmonomyth 37 Comments

Why is it that premier sets occasionally reference teammates but not commander mechanics?

Only two premier sets have ever referred to teammates (Oath of the Gatewatch & Future Sight). The first was playing into the larger theme of the story of the Gatewatch teaming up and it was part of a mechanic, and the second was a single futureshifted card teasing what future Magic might do.

Apes and Mechanics

New 02 Aug 2023 Asked by dude1818 33 Comments

Listening to your apes and monkeys podcast, and I want to point out two things. 1, you mention that how regenerate works was changed in the 6th Edition rules change, but the mechanic was still evergreen through Oath of the Gatewatch (2016). 2, you question whether apes are carnivorous. Most primates are omnivorous, and larger apes actually eat a lot of meat, and will hunt smaller primates

Colorless Mana Use

New 26 Apr 2023 Asked by snoozyrobin 58 Comments

Is there any chance a non Eldrazi based set would use colorless mana like OGW did

I believe there will come a set, that isn’t Eldrazi-themed, that makes use of colorless mana (as a cost).

Colorless Mana Symbol

New 20 Apr 2023 Asked by vereendood 62 Comments

Hi Mark, with 20/20 hindsight, was the introduction of the colorless mana symbol back in ogw worth the upkeep so far, considering we barely see any actual new colorless costs nowadays?

It was worth it for the clarity between (1) and <>.

Excitement for MOM

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by selein 17 Comments

I am extremely excited for MOM because of how well it will play for 2HG and I can't wait to slot some cards into my 2HGEDH decks! It really feels like everything I wanted OGW to be and can't wait to see what you guys do with the new mechanics in Battlebond 2! Thank you for an awesome set and making it Standard legal!

Glad you’re so excited.

Surge Mechanic Return

New 02 Mar 2023 Asked by disbarredgoose0 37 Comments

I got reminded of the Surge mechanic from Oath of the Gatewatch and was wondering, where is it on the storm scale? It's noted as being a 4 on the wiki, but that seems uncharacteristic for a mechanic we haven't seen since ~2016.

Still a 4. There are just a lot of mechanics that can return. If 80% of 4’s return within seven years (and that’s probably high), 20% still won’t appear.

Request for More CCC Cards

New 31 May 2022 Asked by cairnwanderer 44 Comments

Can I request more CCC cards? I'm always happier playing with cards that other people can't easily play with, and most rares seem too splashable to my liking.

CCC means three colorless mana, so my guess is you mean MMM which means three of the same color mana but unspecified. We used to use C to mean that, but had to change to Mwhen C became colorless mana (as of Oath of the Gatewatch). MMM spells require the right setting to be able to include, but we will make more when we find those opportunities. Are you okay with HHH (H standing for u specified hybrid mana) as that’s another way to get three colored mana symbols?

Absence of Wastes in ZNR

New 27 Mar 2022 Asked by silent-calling 76 Comments

In retrospect, I think it's odd we didn't see Wastes in the mix for ZNR, assuming there hadn't been a great amount of time since the Eldrazi laid waste (no pun intended) to the plain. Was there consideration for including wastes in the set? And how likely would it be to see them return in a mainline set in the future?

Wastes we’re in Oath of the Gatewatch as a support for colorless mana in costs. There’s not much need for them if the latter isn’t in the set. Also, not everything on a world shows up in a set. It has to be relevant to the set’s needs.

Evaluating Diamond Colorless Symbol

New 06 Dec 2021 Asked by player4our 59 Comments

I saw it mentioned, but I have a question about the diamond colorless symbol. It was a gigantic change that effected a lot of cards, making all colorless sources produced <>, but we've only ever seen that cost represented in Oath of the Gatewatch. It seems like a huge change to a type of mana and for the formatting of cards but has seen almost no gameplay impact outside of the one set. I'm just curious if it's just difficult to justify <> costed cards or if it was an unsuccessful experiment.

We made the change because having one symbol, (1), mean two different things was problematic. It being a cost forced our hand, but it was something we really should have done from the beginning.

Multiplayer Themes in Legal Sets

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by jjustin1379 31 Comments

Surge was a standard legal keyword that talked about multiplayer formats and having partners. Will we see more of these mechanics in standard legal sets?

Oath of the Gatewatch was a special set in that it had multiplayer themes tying into the story of the Gatewatch coming together and forming. It’s not something I expect us to do often and only when there’s a strong narative reason, especially when we have so many other products to do multiplayer cards.

Support for Colorlessness Theme

How many colorless sources would a set need to support a minor theme of colorlessness?

Look at Oath of the Gatewatch.

White-Black Two Spell Theme

New 14 Jan 2021 Asked by schienamento 56 Comments

Kaldheim seems a great set so far, but one thing that really disappointed me is seeing the "play two spells" theme in White-Black. I loved it in Oath of the Gatewatch and couldn't wait to see it again in Blue-Red. What's the reason behind this change?

Sometimes we like to try themes in different color combinations because they play out differently.

Landfall Mechanic Sustainability

New 01 Dec 2020 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 49 Comments

How much deeper is the landfall mechanic? We have had it in Zendikar, Worldwake, Battle for Zendikar, Oath of the Gatewatch, and Zendikar Rising as well as a smattering of other cards that have the mechanic without being named. I love the mechanic, but worry that the well will run dry eventually.

It’s a pretty open-ended mechanic, so there’s plenty to mine. Also, when it gets brought back we have access to reprints or tweaks of previous landfall cards.

Multiplayer Card Design

New 01 Feb 2020 Asked by boltedmonkeyman-deactivated2023 31 Comments

I understand not wanting to reference non-Standard formats (e.g. "Commander") in Standard sets, but could I request more Standard cards that acknowledge the existence of multiplayer in general? Like Surge in Oath of the Gatewatch or the Battlebond Lands. Magic's infrastructure directly supports multiplayer, but it's rarely utilized outside of a few "each opponent" cards. It would make Two-Headed Giant and non-EDH free-for-all formats so much richer.

All cards work in multiplayer. We reserve cards that specifically reference multiplayer (mostly) for products that focus on multiplayer play.

Chandra's Elemental Bonds

New 16 Jan 2020 Asked by saghm 38 Comments

"Only on 1 card before M20, chandra's spitfire, did she have anything to do with elementals" Chandra, Flamecaller from Oath of the Gatewatch had a +1 to create elemental tokens, similar to Chandra, Acolyte of Flame

Saying Chandra hasn’t always been tied to fire seems extremely odd.

Spells Per Turn Theme

New 23 Nov 2019 Asked by schienamento 32 Comments

Hi Mark! I was wandering if you recently considered 'cast 2 spells in a turn' (like in oath of the gatewatch) instead of 'draw 2 cards in a turn' as a UR theme in a set. I think the former is more interesting since you don't have 50% of the work already done (the card of the draw step) and doesn't feel like an A/B mechanism.

We like to mix things up, so I think we can do both.

Late Set Renaming

New 09 Nov 2019 Asked by tomasaki19 42 Comments

What is the latest a set has been in development but then had its identity or name changed?

The latest I remember a name change was Oath of the Gatewatch because the original name for the group ended up being unusable.
