Mary O'Kill Joke Origins

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by puggfuggly 39 Comments

Mark, you dirty bird! It's taken me decades but I just got the double entendre of Mary O'Kill. Can't believe you got away with it!

I believe that joke is a Kelly Digges creation.

White Mana Symbol Discrepancy

New 07 May 2022 Asked by anjodian 22 Comments

Hello Mark, regarding your white mana symbol question: Prismatic Ward (and Fylgja, the other white promo from Ice Age) were printed in the set with the old symbol. There's an Ask Wizards from January 2007 from Kelly Digges that I linked in the earlier post; as he put it, "having all printed copies of a given card match was viewed as more important than consistency within the set." For years the only online images available were later mockups with the new symbol though!

Segovian Angel Creation

New 27 May 2019 Asked by tonyredgravedmc 70 Comments

Maaaaark! Segovian Angel! You're gonna need a Handy Dandy Clone Machine to make you 2 new hands for high-fiving the one responsible

The card started out in the Hackathon as part of a cycle I made of little versions of iconic creatures. I think I called the white one Wee Serra Angel and it was a 2W 2/2 flier with vigilance. (Making common, but nostalgic, French vanilla designs was hard.) In vision design, Kelly Digges came up with the idea of making it Segovian and Ethan shrink it to a 1/1 in response.

Flavor Text Origins

New 24 Mar 2019 Asked by overflowchute 39 Comments

Mark, I was just looking back at old articles, and I just realized that Knight of the Widget's flavor text was a Space the Convergence reference! You sly dog!

Kelly Digges was both in charge of Unstable flavor text and wrote the Space: The Convergence article.

Tribal Type Technicalities

New 09 Jun 2018 Asked by su92 51 Comments

FYI: The tribal type issue boils down to two things: 1) subtypes are associated with types only, not supertypes. 2) This is because it makes it easy to clearly define what subtypes fit where in a world where Rogue Equipment or Forest Dryad are printable. Also, losing types (such as artifact) would either cause permanents not to lose subtypes (such as Equipment) or make only tribal cards work differently in this regard, both of which are unintuitive. Tribal Supertype Complications

New 23 Dec 2016 Asked by su92 30 Comments

An FYI to curious Question Marks. Kelly Digges answered at great length the complications with having tribal be a supertype and even touched the subject of what it would be like if subtypes weren't associated with card types. They can google the Ask Wizards of May 17, 2007.

Jace's Coffee Quest

New 02 Aug 2016 Asked by legendcallerl 62 Comments

There has been a story where Jace has tried (and failed) to get coffee on Ravnica, Catching Up, by Kelly Digges.

We’d base a short story on Jace getting coffee, just not a whole block.

Drone Type Explanation

New 19 Sep 2015 Asked by kpestana 26 Comments

It took me a while, but I finally figured out what the Drone creature type means mechanically (Devoid creature that is not a Processor). Have you guys explained this anywhere yet?

Kelly Digges has on Twitter.

Story Tease

New 22 Jul 2015 Asked by jwiley129 39 Comments

Since Emrakul is taking over for Doug, I'll put this in your inbox. I love how in the recent UR Gideon is completely immovable, Liliana leaves as soon as it's not all about her, and Jace keeps repeating "He knows better". A+ job by Kelly Digges!

If you haven’t read it, I linked to the story earlier today. Give it a read. It’s leading towards a certain fall set.

Modern Masters Lore

New 07 May 2015 Asked by napoleonica 39 Comments

It's nice that we're getting Uncharted Realms about cards found in the new Modern Masters. Helps to make it feel like it's contributing to the overall mythos despite being a supplemental set. Getting a piece of Kamigawa fiction was a nice surprise as well.

I’ll pass along the kind words to Kelly Digges who oversees the column.

Uncharted Realms Appreciation

New 18 Feb 2015 Asked by alekzandersayers 66 Comments

Reading the Uncharted Realms today, I couldn't help but feel like you helped write it, especially at the point where each of the Kahns are sharing their philosophies at the meeting ;). This storyline is so on point and uncharted realms just keeps getting better and better. Thank you guys so so so much.

While I agree that “Uncharted Realms” has been doing great work, I can’t take any of the credit. It is the hard work of Kelly Digges and his talented pool of freelance writers.

Stoneforge Mystic & Nahiri

New 29 Oct 2014 Asked by thelastvisibledog 719 Comments

Nahiri is fantastic, and so is the story. Much thanks to the creative team and Kelly Digges. I noticed that she is very similar in appearance to Stoneforge Mystic, and not just by being a female Kor, but also her clothes, haircut, and abilities. They are so similar it seems beyond coincidence. Is Stoneforge Mystic supposed to represent Nahiri in some way?

dougbeyermtg:
Nahiri was part of a tradition of kor stoneforgers — powerful mages who forge weapons from stone — and that tradition still exists on Zendikar today (which we know as the card Stoneforge Mystic). Nahiri’s (awesome) art by Eric Deschamps was definitely modeled on the art of Worldwake’s Stoneforge Mystic. Nahiri, the Lithomancer art by Eric Deschamps Nahiri’s title of “the Lithomancer” relates to this same tradition of stoneforging, and her talents in crafting with stone contributed to the trapping of the Eldrazi on Zendikar along with Ugin and Sorin. In short, Nahiri is the creator of Zendikar’s hedrons. More in “The Lithomancer” by Kelly Digges: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/ur/lithomancer-2014-10-29 image Art by Igor Kieryluk
For those that are curious about “the lithomancer”. Also, Doug answers the Stoneforge Mystic question.

Multiverse Threats

New 12 Jun 2014 Asked by the-englishman-abroad 23 Comments

Soooo.. MaRo. I thought Kelly Digges Kruphix column was a great read... But it has lead me to think on something... Is one Evil Mastermind, and two Multiverse-wide threats enough for Magic, or do we need more? (it has, after all... been awfully quiet as of late...) : )

The Multiverse has plenty of more threats.

Uncharted Realms Feedback

New 13 Feb 2014 Asked by tonyredgravedmc 43 Comments

Where can I direct my feedback on Uncharted Realms passages? I want to show my praise for "Kiora's Followers" and encourage the inclusion of Planeswalker actions like Planeswalking, mana tapping, and summoning specific creatures. A happy reader am I.

I can pass along the message to the creative team and Kelly Digges, the author of the story.

Oxford Comma Stance

Much to the dismay of editor Kelly Digges, I am not a fan.

Halloween Costumes

New 02 Nov 2012 Asked by bluelotus0-blog 9 Comments

Did anyone at Wizards dress up for Halloween?

Yes. The Pit even had two Doctors (from Doctor Who), the tenth and eleventh.  (Gavin Verhey was the tenth and Kelly Digges was the eleventh.)

Planechase 2012 Acknowledgment

New 02 Nov 2012 Asked by psrex 8 Comments

Please pass on my thanks to Mark Globus (lead), Kelly Digges, Dave Guskin, Ryan Miller, Mark L. Gottlieb (lead), Ryan Miller, Lee Sharpe, Ken Troop, and Matt Tabak for the Planechase 2012 decks. The decks are amazingly fun, and they're my new favorites when teaching new players. The number of mechanics isn't too large within a single deck, but they're really flavorful and powerful for a casual deck. The decks really show off what one can do with creative deck building around a theme. Thanks!

Will do. I’m glad you’re enjoying them. They put a lot of work into them.

Duel Decks Feedback

New 16 Sep 2012 Asked by magic-chan 2 Comments

Ibought the first 5 batchs of duel decks, but I stoped buying them because I didn't have much fun playing them. I bought again IvG for the tournament caliber cards in it and for alters for my Cube. I played a few games with my girlfriend on its release and since we played them every evening, because the decks are a blast to play, fun, balanced, and really hard (but rewarding) to master. I think I'll need to buy a second box for the cards. Could you please pass my thanks to those responsible?

I will do. I believe it was a combination of Chris Millar, Mark Gottlieb and Kelly Digges.

Favorite Cards Inquiry

New 26 Aug 2012 Asked by dragon-noises 2 Comments

Love your blog! It's all... insightful and fantastic and things. Since you've been getting a lot of "who designed this" questions lately, do you know who designed Hellrider, Myr Battlesphere and Hellkite Charger? Those are my three favorite cards. And, um, a more substantial question of what your opinions of them are as well? Hellkite Charger and Bear Umbra are from the same block, and I'm curious, was that combo planned or often used in testing? sorry for all the questions, stay awesome!!

Hellrider was probably made by myself or someone on my Dark Ascension design team (Jenna Helland, Zac Hill, Graeme Hopkins & Matt Tabak), Myr Battlesphere was made by Aaron Forsythe and Hellkite Charger was made by Ken Nagle or someone on his Archenemy design team (Kelly Digges, Aaron Forsythe, Dave Guskin & Mons Johnson). My favorite of them is the Myr Battlesphere but the other two seem like fun cards. I don’t think the combo was planned.

Card Designer Credits

New 09 Aug 2012 Asked by strymon 0 Comments

Have you ever considered including the respective card designer's name on cards? I think it would encourage collecting cards based on the designer just how people might collect music based on the musician and people would begin constructing MaRo decks.

Design credits are not so clear cut. Much of the time, many hands can be involved in the design of a card. Also, it’s not always obvious who made a particular card since there is a lot of parallel design going on.  For example, I was trying for years to get Bestial Menace in the game. It eventually made it into a set, one I was on the design team on, yet it was turned in by Kelly Digges who had no idea that I had written about it in a column nine years earlier.
