Fuse

Spree Mechanic Nature

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by pashu111-blog 23 Comments

Hi Mark, I'm hoping you can help settle this now that spoilers have started. Is spree considered a kicker variant, or a split card (with fuse) variant?

Spree is more like a three-card split card with fuse.

Fuse Card Cost Logic

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 40 Comments

Wait why do fuse cards need to cost more? I don’t understand how both effects costing more makes it better to cast at the same time

Let’s say I have a traditional split card with effect A and effect B. Usually A costs a little more than A would cost in a vacuum as you have the alternative to play B. Likewise for B. Now some effects don’t quite equal the cost of their mana cost because we have to cost things in whole numbers, so sometimes the individual costs don’t change because there was some “wiggle room” in the cost.If the card has fuse, you now have a third ability, which means that the cost of A and the cost of B have to account for that. Again, if there’s some wiggle room, maybe you can keep costs the same, but the ability to play the second ability is substantial, so most likely that means an increase in the cost of A or B, often both.

Fuse Mechanic Usage

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by noahmatthews1399 33 Comments

We've seen several iterations of traditional split cards. Is there a particular reason why we haven't seen fuse again? Design or play issues? Is it still a 5 on the storm scale?

Fuse cards force us to make the base effects cost more, so the card really wants you to fuse it, which means it gets played less.

If/When: A non-acorn version of Who/What/When/Where/Why, with fuse?

If.

Fuse Mechanic Usage

We have seen many split cards since Dragon's Maze, what happened to Fuse (other than on a single Commander card)?

It’s something we use sporadically.

We didn’t need it.

Fuse Mechanic Missed

New 22 Jan 2024 Asked by cgreyl3 23 Comments

I would like to express my disappointment in the flavor failure of not making Push//Pull fuseable alongside Fuss//Bother. It just seemed like a missed opportunity. Unless there is just some storm scale issue that I don't know about with fuse.

The split cards in the set don’t have fuse (as is the default for split cards).

I do.

Boosters for Drafting

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by slapcastermage 34 Comments

The limited sets in the past 4 years have been unbelievable! I have been having an absolute blast, I have drafted them all! I was crushed to hear that draft boosters were going away. Why were draft boosters added, taken away, and replaced with play boosters? With the additional rare slot and less commons to fuse with the now obsolete set boosters, it feels like the push to make everything more profitable is creeping into limited play. Some things I like about limited 1) Each set is usually not impacted by must-have or oppressive commander or modern cards. 2) I like is that it's common centric. 3) I like that there is a lower frequency of rares. 4) low cost of entry, 15 bucks at my local lgs, 10 on Arena. In general, I am not happy about the limited booster changes but I will wait to try them.I am concerned that one day limited will be deemed "not profitable" and this golden age will end.

Play boosters are us ensuring that draft continues on. Draft boosters were selling so poorly, they were eventually going to be eliminated. We took steps to make sure you can keep drafting.

Split Cards Limitations

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 26 Comments

So a split card that one half gives your creatures indestructible and the other half destroys all creature would be white, but if it had fuse, it couldn't be white? Or does this change because of split cards vs entwine?

If we wouldn’t do it as entwine, we wouldn’t do it as a split card with fuse.

Read Ahead Limitations

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by simicmimic 50 Comments

Why does read ahead have limited design space? It seems like it could go on any saga. Is it power level? Maybe the same could be said for fuse and split cards.

It can’t just be put on any Saga, not without changing the mana cost. Read ahead Sagas need to have a nice balance of effects where you are tempted to skip ahead, but not structured such that you always do so. It’s a delicate restriction to design to.

Fuse vs Historic Return

New 10 Jul 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 33 Comments

Hi Mark, which is more likely to return to a premier set? Fuse or Historic. They are two of my favorites and I'm surprised we haven't seen more of them.

Historic.

Ratings for Dual Mechanics

New 16 May 2023 Asked by scrungus-bungus-the-elder-god 47 Comments

Where do each of the "2 cards in 1" mechanics fall on the storm scale? Things like the Fire//Ice classic split cards, but also things like Aftermath, Fuse, Transform, Flip and the Modal Dual cards.

Each one of those is a different thing.Split cards are a 2, as they’re deciduousAftermath is a 7, as the frame was much disliked (I can see us doing something similar but reworking the frame)Fuse is a 5, as it’s a mechanic that only goes on split cards.Flip cards (the Kamigawa mechanic) is a 9.TDFCs and MDFCs are also a 2, as they are also deciduous.

Return of Real-World References

New 19 Apr 2022 Asked by lantern-armory 40 Comments

With card names like You Are Already Dead and An Offer You Can't Refuse, do you think we'll ever see the comeback of real-world references in flavor text? (a.k.a. the Shakespeare scale?)

In Universes Beyond products.

Modal Double Faced Cards Use

New 16 Sep 2021 Asked by wilhelmscreamer 39 Comments

Do modal double faced cards still leave room for new traditional (not fuse/aftermath/adventure) split cards in magic? Do modal double faced cards do the same job but better?

We purposefully didn’t do modal double faced cards that are instants and/or sorceries on both sides because split cards do it without needing the second side.

Errata Addition to Split Cards

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by wnkler 26 Comments

Do you think ‘conventional’ (non-Aftermath etc.) split cards could be errata’d to have Fuse?

I do not. They weren’t costed for that functionality.

On Malikir Rebirth/Infuse Possibilities

New 29 Apr 2021 Asked by lettuce-from-the-salad-bar 37 Comments

Are Makakir Rebirth / Infuse with Vitality effects theoretically in pie for either white or boros?

I believe White could get Malikir Rebirth, but probably without the life loss and Infuse with Vitality without the deathtouch. I don’t see what red adds to either.

Kicker Versus Other Abilities

New 15 Mar 2021 Asked by tbjanowski 75 Comments

Buyback, Replicate, Entwine, Fuse, Exploit, Awaken and Escalate are all really just versions of Kicker. Why not just use Kicker so that these abilities could be backward and forward compatable?

1) We value flavor and excitement of individual sets over keyword continuity. There isn’t that many cards, for example, that care about kicker. As I’ve said many times, one of the big drawbacks of kicker is it’s too broad a mechanic. 2) Not having to keyword it as kicker gives us more flexibility on how individual mechanics work. Not every mechanic you named, for instance, is exactly kicker.

MDFC and Split Cards

New 14 Jan 2021 Asked by zaneyzane2 39 Comments

On MDFC/Cassette cards, does this mean we won't be seeing split cards without a split-specific mechanic (Fuse, Aftermath, Adventure, etc.) in the future? Since they do pretty much exactly what those cards want to do, but better, it seems?

Spllit cards have the advantage of being single-faced. They have the disadvantage of only being instants and sorceries. We should see basic split cards again.

Fuse on DFC Cards

New 17 Sep 2020 Asked by wigshewrote 25 Comments

Would it be possible to see fuse on a model DFC card? Or do you imagine fuse being specifically a split card thing?

There’s no way to represent both sides on the battlefield. In theory you could do a spell and a permanent, but it’s starting to approach Adventure.
