Keyword Combos Request

New 15 Sep 2023 Asked by shallowerblue 41 Comments

I've been really enjoying the "keyword mix-and-match" that's been possible in Limited several times recently (examples being mutate in IKO, disturb auras in VOW, and backup in MOM). It's been fun trying to give deathtouch to a first strike creature, or flying to a big creature, and many more. I'm unsure if that's more Vision or Set Design, but could I request more and/or ask you to give a high-five to the appropriate designers? Thanks so much!

Mechanical choice and execution is both team’s responsibility. I’ll try to make more.

Cross-Set Support

New 04 Aug 2023 Asked by thestoreman 42 Comments

Hi Mark! We know the two most recent Innistrad sets got to share the Disturb mechanic, and since cross-set support is a point from your state of design articles, have any other sets tried doing that? Just a "we have to share a mechanic" directive?

I tried to have flashback in Strixhaven and Midnight Hunt.

Color Allocation for Reanimating Mechanics

New 21 May 2022 Asked by mois113 37 Comments

Wait, if black/green are the self reanimating colors and Eternal Dragon is a break, then why does white get mechanics like Embalm, Eternalize and Disturb, on high volume even?

White can reanimate other creatures. It’s number two at reanimating. It’s not supposed to be on creatures reanimating themselves as that’s black and green (and red on Phoenixes). We let mechanics do it which is why the three above mechanics did it, but we don’t let white do it on individual cards much like blue got Embalm but doesn’t get it on individual creatures.

Reprinting Plane-Specific Mechanic

New 22 Dec 2021 Asked by pkerichang-blog 49 Comments

Is it possible to reprint a plane-specific mechanic like embalm under a more generic name in another plane, like innistrad? With day/night, disturb, and embalm, we now have 3 out of 4 mechanics that turns human into the major innistrad monsters (with only vampire missing). It'll be interesting to have an innistrad set where the theme is human fighting previous-human.

That’s the theme of every Innistrad set.

Exile Clause of Disturb Part

New 15 Dec 2021 Asked by jimharbor 44 Comments

Why isn't the exile clause of disturb part of the mechanic? It seems odd to spell it out all the time.

Because disturb is on the front face, but the exile clause needs to be in the permanent it’s referencing (aka the back face).

2-Set Blocks Preference

New 17 Nov 2021 Asked by zackdes44 53 Comments

I agree that the 3-set block structure often made things feel stale, but I would like to see 2-set block structure be the norm. Seeing mechanics evolve (embalm/eternalize) or just exploring more design space than a single set could (energy/disturb) provides more ability to build around a mechanic we like.

We did try two-set blocks for a couple years, without great success.

Disturbed Cards Wording

New 16 Nov 2021 Asked by wiggin91 39 Comments

"Isn't it true that the back side of DFCs only ever exists on the battlefield?" Also disturbed cards are back face up on the stack (when cast for Disturb from the graveyard). So this wording means if a distrurbed card gets countered (or aura looses target), it gets exiled as well.

FYI

Disturb Creatures Wording

New 16 Nov 2021 Asked by kuroikoinu 44 Comments

Mark, why does the back side of disturb creatures say "[. . .] put into a graveyard from anywhere, [. . .]" instead of simply "[. . .] die, [. . .]" ? Isn't it true that the back side of DFCs only ever exists on the battlefield? So wouldn't it be the case that the only way they would ever go to a graveyard would be by being put there from the battlefield, that is, dying?

Auras don’t die, only creatures die.

Appreciation for Disturb Evolution

New 14 Nov 2021 Asked by sinkingtime 55 Comments

Hey, can i congratulate you on the evolution of disturb, actually? I just realized all the ones in MID start as Humans and come back as Spirits, whereas in VOW they start as Spirits and come back as enchantments. Because even death may die, i guess? Anyways, it was a cool detail.

Glad you liked it.

Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow

New 07 Nov 2021 Asked by okniwy 67 Comments

Someone at my LGS is claiming that Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow were originally one set, and that it's "obvious when you look at them". I'm pretty sure that's not the case. Design has just gotten way better at designing synergy between sets, right? I'm a little tired of the lack of faith that magic set design is intentional.

They were never one set. The aura version of disturb was originally designed for Midnight Hunt and decayed was originally designed for Crimson Vow, and they were swapped, but that’s the only connection between the two designs.

Spirits with Disturb Concept

New 07 Nov 2021 Asked by lookingupanddown 33 Comments

Was there ever a Spirit with Disturb that had a Pacifism effect as its back face at any point that VOW was being worked on?

No, because the effect of the aura matches the ability of the Spirit.

Evolution of Mechanics in Sets

New 30 Oct 2021 Asked by sigmasonicx 84 Comments

One thing I missed about the old block format is seeing mechanics evolve throughout the block. Usually with returning mechanics, it sort of resets to introducing the mechanic to new players with only a few new implementations. So, I like seeing how disturb evolved in this set.

I’d like to see more mechanic evolution.

Disturb Mechanic Evolution

New 29 Oct 2021 Asked by murmuringmystic 63 Comments

Mark, I wanted to say how happy I am to see Disturb return in VOW! One thing I missed about the block style of visiting worlds was how we couldn't see in-depth exploration of mechanics. I'm enjoying see Disturb evolve after being given more time to shine!

I am interested in finding more ways to have mechanics overlap between sets… even between sets on different planes (but that’s still a work in progress).

Trading Mechanic Query

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by metallicity 34 Comments

"when Innistrad: Midnight Hunt took the decayed Zombie creature tokens from Innistrad: Crimson Vow, they traded them the Spirit mechanic." Did Spirit have a tribal mechanic besides Disturb at some point (or on cards we haven't seen yet)? This idea of trading mechanics seems odd if both sets were using Disturb, just in different ways.

The original version of the Spirit mechanic for Midnight Hunt was double-faced creature cards that died into auras that granted a similar ability, sort of a re-done haunt using double-faced card technology. Set design ended up turning that into disturb (meaning there was a cost to pay to “cast” the backside) and then realized they could do two versions and it made sense to do the creature/creature version first.

Feedback on Day/Night Icon

New 13 Oct 2021 Asked by ramisirote 46 Comments

I just wanted to leave feedback that in my opinion using the same day/night icon for TDFC cards that dont transform using day/night is a little confusing. Especially with Disturb cards that dont transform on the battlefield at all

I agree. Previously Innistrad sets used the sun and moon for all versions of TDFCs and we never reevaluated it.

Congratulating Creative Team

New 07 Oct 2021 Asked by rolscane 37 Comments

I'd just like to congratulate the creative team for the creative uses of DFC. You've got werewolves in WUB (typically non-WW colors), you've got Disturb as a fun new way of giving flashback to creatures and you even have other transforming creatures without being werewolves / disturbable spirits. Here, take some high fives.

High fives shall be applied.

Vengeful Strangler's Disturb Use

New 05 Oct 2021 Asked by zanthr 21 Comments

Could Vengeful Strangler have been done using Disturb?

No. It’s a trigger of the creature dying and there’s no mana cost.

Disturb Mechanic in Non-Permanent Cards

New 05 Oct 2021 Asked by raytyger 34 Comments

Mark, could Disturb work with one of the sides as a non-permanent and the other as a permanent?

It could work mechanically. The flavor would be a bit off.

Disturb Mechanic Feedback

New 04 Oct 2021 Asked by paregmenonparadigm 29 Comments

No question. Just wanted to say I love the new disturb mechanic. It feels fun and flavorful. My only gripe is there isn't more of it and that the cards printed are a little on the weak side for the formats I play. Still really cool and I hope it returns more in the future!

Happy you’re enjoying it.

Disturb Cards Mana Value

New 03 Oct 2021 Asked by injuryman 48 Comments

Just a random question about disturb cards. Since they're transforming, that means their Mana Value is the same as the front side, right? Because that's at least one mechanical thing that would be functionally different if they were MDCs that had a side you could only cast from the graveyard.

Yes, the backside has the same mana value as the front side.
