Spike's Banned Cards

New 25 Jul 2019 Asked by dienekes101 36 Comments

Maro, silver bordered question. Spike list. I’m reading Arena state of the beta article and there is a banned list for events. Can spike pull these cards? Thank you sir.

If it’s a banned or restricted card in any format Wizards supports, Spike can get it.

Chronicles Counting

New 15 Apr 2019 Asked by perfectlydarien 49 Comments

I would suggest that counting Chronicles separately from Fourth Edition makes no more sense than does counting Alpha and Beta as separate sets. It was packaged in different packs, but was considered to be an extension of Fourth Edition, and was legal everywhere (and everywhen) Fourth Edition was; it didn't occupy an "expansion" slot in Type 2, and it rotated along with Fourth Edition when Fifth Edition came out. It should probably not count.

I agree that counting Chronicles seems odd. Thoughts?

Counting to 100 Sets

New 14 Apr 2019 Asked by exactchangeman 64 Comments

What sets are considered in the counting up to the 100th Magic set? Congratulations! What a great accomplishment.

I beiieve every Standard-legal set (or anything pre-Standard that would have been Standard under today’s definition. Counting Alpha and Beta as one set (Limited Edition), and counting all the Core sets and all main sets, can others double check the counting? If Archery is actually #100, that would be exciting.

Counting Sets Debate

New 13 Apr 2019 Asked by ikketton 43 Comments

I personally want to count Alpha and Beta as separate from unlimited so that War of the Spark is the 100th set, since this feels like a great event for such an occasion.

1) They’re not.2) If you count them separately, it makes Core 2020 the hundredth (assuming the counting was correct).

100th Expansion

New 13 Apr 2019 Asked by corvus-abyssus 78 Comments

Someone recently mentioned that Magic's 100th expansion will be in seven years. If you include core sets, either Core 2020 or this year's fall set will be the 100th set ever legal in Standard, depending on whether you count Beta separately from Alpha.

Alpha and Beta are both Limited Edition. So the fall set is #100. Interesting.

Beta Draft Excitement

New 19 Jun 2018 Asked by bradly 42 Comments

Did you watch the beta draft from GP Vegas? Were you surprised by the community's excitement for it?

I was right at the table as it was being drafted. I expected it to generate a lot of excitement. It’s a Beta Draft!

Favorite Expansion

New 17 May 2018 Asked by project-two-five-zero-one 36 Comments

What do you think is the best-designed expansion you didn’t work on? (Excluding Alpha, Beta, etc.)

Antiquities. Remember, I’ve worked on most Magic sets since 1995.

Arena Platform Expansion

New 01 Apr 2018 Asked by asteampunkhufflepuff 38 Comments

I was really excited months ago when Arena was first introduced, and put my name in to get into the Beta! Just got my email saying I could get it, but turns out I don’t use Windows. Do you have any clue as to when or if the devs are planning on making Arena for more platforms?

I don’t know the timeline, but I know it’s in the plans.

Arena Beta Codes Issue

New 23 Mar 2018 Asked by themissingno-blog 36 Comments

You know that the MTG Arena beta codes posted on twitter are being raided by bots within seconds, and real people aren't getting to get them. They're going to the same 5 dudes who are probably gonna resell them for five bucks or something and make a bunch of money off of your IP. Maybe try having them DM'ed to the first 5 people to reply to the tweet?

I’ll pass the note along.

Richard Garfield Sets

New 13 Mar 2018 Asked by zzedar 76 Comments

Which sets has Richard Garfield worked on?

Limited Edition (Alpha/Beta), Arabian Nights, Tempest, Odyssey, Judgment, Ravnica, Innistrad, Dominaria. He is credited on Urza’s Saga and Torment as mechanics he made premiered in them.

Rochester Draft Packs

New 06 Mar 2018 Asked by nocht-der-undertoten 32 Comments

for the rochester drafts of Unlimited, are these fresh, new packs that will be drafted? Newly printed? does that mean there will be a new printing of older cards? (based completely within the realm of an old time-y draft)

The Beta and Unlimited packs will be old packs. Nothing new is being printed.

Volcanic Island Watermark

New 01 Mar 2018 Asked by tired-nomad 41 Comments

If Volcanic Island COULD be printed in Masters 25, would you give it a different Watermark then the cards that were available in Alpha, as the first printing for Volcanic Island was Beta?

Alpha and Beta are just the first and second printing of Limited Edition. We don’t differentiate between first and second printings of any other product.

Beta Set Clarification

"Every vintage legal set that has introduced new cards." Circle of Protection: Black confirmed?

Beta is just the second printing of Limited Edition.

Alpha vs Sealed Play

New 11 Feb 2018 Asked by ttip24 32 Comments

Richard Garfield designed Alpha to be played with a starter deck and maybe a couple of boosters. That seems really close to a sealed pool. What's the difference between that and sealed?

If you’ve ever played limited with Alpha/Beta/Unlimited (and I have), it becomes apparent very quickly, it wasn’t designed for limited. While there is overlap with casual constructed, they are different animals.

Beta and GDS3 Participation

New 15 Dec 2017 Asked by turkeysinatrenchcoat-blog 19 Comments

Is there any conflict between the Arena closed beta and GDS3? If I apply/accept an invitation to the Arena, how would the NDA that is part of a closed beta affect participation in GDS3?

They are unrelated. Entry into one has no impact on the other.

Favorite Alpha/Beta Card

New 14 Oct 2017 Asked by luckydog1123-blog 42 Comments

Hello Mark! It's my birthday tomorrow but I'm too excited so I hope it's okay I ask now :) what is your favorite individual card design (or designs) from Alpha/Beta/Unlimited and why?

There’s so many great cards, so my answer would change on a different day. Today I choose Giant Growth. It’s flavorful, simple, creates great gameplay and we can still reprint it.Happy Birthday!

Influential Sets Ranked

New 07 Oct 2017 Asked by battlegaming 62 Comments

Good morning MaRo! I friend and I were discussing sets yesterday and debating how influential they were to Magic overall. Aside from Alpha/Beta/etc we had varying top 3’s. I was advocating for Tempest and he was advocating for Legends! In your expert opinion, which are the three most influential sets in Magic’s history?

It depends a lot on how you define the criteria of what you’re looking for. I find sets that lead ages of design to be very influential. 1st Age - Alpha
2nd Age - Mirage
3rd Age - Invasion
4th Age - Ravnica
5th Age - Scars of Mirrodin
6th Age - Khans of Tarkir

Early Printing Changes

New 19 Sep 2017 Asked by thenerdysteve 27 Comments

"We don’t tend to change the cards in future printings of the same set. When we did it in early Magic, it caused all sorts of confusion." When did that happen in early Magic? And, isn't this a pretty egregious functional change/errata? Again, I don't have the info, but what are the benefits of not changing and how do they outweigh the cons?

There were twenty plus printing changes between Alpha and Beta. We’re a collectible so when we change things, it makes a different collectible item. When we do too much of that it upsets people.

SEALED ALPHA/BETA Existence

New 02 Jun 2017 Asked by makeupanddresses 31 Comments

Mark. I shave the up most question to ask. You can PM your answer, or simply reply in public. Do SEALED ALPHA/BETA boxes exist? I have a friend who is sceptical that they never have simply because of how they were used as demonstration pieces in packs. I'm a firm believer that you, Mr. Garfield, his co-designer in the beginning(forget his name), and WotC President/CEO are the FEW that would have one. What say you, oh wise one?

They do exist. I have owned some in the past.
