Magic Story Compliments

New 19 Jan 2024 Asked by the-madness-network 45 Comments

This might be my favorite Magic story ever; ten articles might not be enough space for a proper apocalypse but it's just right for a fun murder mystery. Major kudos to the story team!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Vindicate Reprint Possibility

New 15 Jan 2024 Asked by fedacking 27 Comments

I love the original flavor text for Vindicate in Apocalypse. I would really enjoy to see a reprint that includes it. Is that possible, considering it references Gerard?

It limits where we could do it, but there are places.

Zombie Apocalypse Query

New 21 Nov 2023 Asked by krinstranger 26 Comments

Wasn't Zombie Apocalypse basically the resolution of Eldritch Moon's story? Haven't you done it already, just from the zombie master's POV?

Part of a traditional Zombie Apocalypse setting is the apocalypse part. Zombies have destroyed the society and only a small handful of non-Zombies remain.

Zombie Dance Card

In the hypothetical zombie apocalypse set, what are the chances we get a card that represents a giant synchronized zombie dance?

An enchantment called Thriller? : )

Future Zombie Theme

New 20 Nov 2023 Asked by tescrin 38 Comments

"Zombie feels like a when," - I think Amonkhet was your Zombie set -> every color had access to zombies via Embalm and Eternalize; with most being White/Green/Blue (and black of course having normal zombies.)

Zombie Apocalypse seems such a staple of pop culture, that I assume one day we’ll do our spin on it.

Rule System Stress

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by j-waffles 42 Comments

One of the playtest cards from Gavin’s unknown event was a card that referenced the MOM legendary team up cards; and he said that the card didn’t really work within the rules. Although that is technically true, I find it hard to believe it could not be easily worked into the rules. Obviously it is clearly understood from the average player POV, but from a rules perspective, why couldn’t there just be a section in the rules that lists all the cards that are legal options? That already exists for Apocalypse Chime, City in a Bottle, and Golgothian Sylex; and I would argue they are far less intuitive or easy to remember when it comes to what cards they apply to. This isn’t me demanding that Gavin’s card be made legal, more so it’s me asking: why can’t cards like that get made? Cards/mechanics that reference a small and intuitive list of cards, with the comprehensive rules having a formal definition for that list?

It comes down to how much stress does it put on the system and is it worth that stress? We believe the answer is no, because it’s a lot of stress for minimal pay off. That’s why acorn/silver-border cards exist. There are things that are practically easy to use, but are onerous on the rules system. Those cards should exist because they’re fun, but we can do so without causing problems with the larger rules structure.

Return to Amonkhet

New 17 Aug 2023 Asked by vulpixsavior 45 Comments

Amonkhet has had it rough, there were just recovering from War of the Spark and Nicol Bolas, then boom second apocalypse with the phyrexian invasion. Literally just wanna go back there for this reason alone. If/When: Return to Amonkhet?

I hope when.

Arena Witness Protection

New 09 May 2023 Asked by nodnaut-blog 94 Comments

Playing Witness Protection on Arena is the gift that keeps on giving. Seeing Ghalta or Sheoldred, The Apocalypse retitled 'legitimate business person' is a really fun digital feature. I'm a paper guy first but digital has its joys.

It does. : )

Vertical Cycles Rarity

New 30 Mar 2023 Asked by melissanoma 39 Comments

The reprint of Phyrexian Gargantua reminded me about vertical cycles. Why don't you do them as often any more? e.g. Apocalypse had the "Phyrexian" cycle, the Bloodfires, Penumbras, and Whirlpools. Every set had a few around the early 2000s, but the only ones in the past year (afaik) are the "Urza and Mishra through the ages".

We still do them, but it’s become a space issue as there are a lot more things that need to be addressed in sets today than there was twenty plus years ago.

Zombie Apocalypse Setting

New 24 Dec 2022 Asked by doopboopdoop 52 Comments

Do you feel players would assume zombie apocalypse world would be set on Innistrad?

I imagine it would be a stylized world where the zombies would be of a lot more things than just humans.

Zombie Types Discussion

New 24 Dec 2022 Asked by fehtc 54 Comments

Zombies are a big part of pop culture and i see two mainstream storylines that explain them: the dead people reanimated, and the people infected by some sort of virus. In mtg, the tribe is very well established both mechanically and flavorwise as the first type. Is there space to explore zombies in the second type? Or is this a fungus niche?

We’ve talked about a zombie apocalypse world, which would probably be the latter.

Zombie Apocalypse Plane

Probably a different plane.

Old Frame Nostalgia Value

New 30 Oct 2022 Asked by beeodoresknees 49 Comments

Just so you know, some people are really looking forward to opening a product produced entirely in old frame. While I understand that there are legibility issues, this actually does generate the sort of nostalgia I think Wizards was looking for that previous products with retro frame treatments has lacked - the actual feeling of opening a pack of Apocalypse or something from that era. I appreciate the opportunity to do that again.

The complaint isn’t that that product exists. The request is that when we make new cards that the ability exists to have them exist in the normal frame in addition to any bonus frame.

Implementing Rare-B-Gone

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 33 Comments

Re: Rare-B-Gone, couldn't it work in black border the same way Apocalypse Chime and all the other expansion matters cards do, by caring about the original rarity a card was printed at? That way reprints don't impact its effect.

That requires too much knowledge. For example, without access to a database, do you know the rarity of first printing of cards? Does counter target common spell stop a Disenchant? Or a Counterspell? Or a Lightning Bolt?

Magic Novels Shift

New 17 Aug 2022 Asked by charble 53 Comments

Can I ask why the Magic novels were discontinued and the format changed to short stories online? While I am excited and enjoying the Dominaria United storyline, I just recently re-read Invasion, Planeshift, and Apocalypse, and I felt the novel format far more satisfying.

Sadly, the novel fans were a tiny minority.

Intuitive Batching and CR Consultation

New 05 Jul 2022 Asked by bobbymcbobbo 31 Comments

I would say that Apocalypse Chime, City in a Bottle and Golgothian Sylex were the first cards that used the concept of "batching". However, their batch is explicitly defined in the comprehensive rules (CR), and would be a little long to fit in reminder text. Would you ever make another "intuitive" batch where it can be roughly described in reminder text, but you might have to consult the CR in order to know 100% whether something is part of the batch?

Yes, if the batch was generally intuitive enough that players could guess at 99% of it.

Expanding Ooze-Themed Cards

New 22 Jun 2022 Asked by ironchefravnica 55 Comments

I'd like ooze-themed cards to be a broader category than characters, or creatures. For instance, the exciting new ooze-themed artifact, Apocalypse Slime. The powerful aura, Slime of Night. The instant that's sure to become a multi-format staple, Dig Through Slime. I'll be expecting these when you release an ooze-themed Un-set. Of course, I don't know how soon that will happen, but surely it's just a matter of slime.

Handling Dissent on Magic Brand Direction

New 20 Jan 2022 Asked by moonsliceman 117 Comments

What would you say to someone who doesn't like the direction of the Magic brand? This person argues that Universes Beyond and Un-sets are contaminating or diluting Magic. They'd rather Magic stick to the genre and themes that it does well, and that the creative space within those themes are infinite. If a player wants otherwise, find a different game. They don't just dislike Un-sets, they dislike that Un-sets exist in the scope of Magic as a whole.

Magic, from its very beginning, has always been about pushing boundaries and expanding what it is. Alpha was a hodgepodge of various high fantasy tropes including a variety of sources like Greek mythology, Camelot, Dungeons & Dragons, and Tolkien. Arabian Nights, the very first expansion, was about Arabian/Persian mythology, literally a top-down design of another source material that had nothing to do with traditional Western fantasy. And it’s not as if the early years of Magic didn’t push in all sorts of creative directions. A war story of battling robots, an ice age apocalypse, an African saga, a flying ship traveling to a shadow realm, rebellion in a mercantile city. Even the Un-sets date back to 1998, just five years into the game’s life. If you don’t like the direction of the Magic brand, I would argue you don’t understand what the Magic brand has been since its creation. It was introduced as the game that breaks its own rules, and that’s been true from day one, both mechanically and creatively.True, we continue to push in new and different directions, so we’re always introducing aspects that you might not have seen before, but that’s what we do. It’s what we’ve always done. Magic is not a brand that lives in a tiny sliver of creative space. It’s a brand that’s constantly expanding and growing. It’s a brand about customization, so we provide a wide swath of choices to let each player maximize what they enjoy.

Complex Rules and Card Bans

New 11 Jan 2022 Asked by moonsliceman 26 Comments

There's a pretty healthy number of cards that cause general rules complexity for their own sake. Graveyard order matters, Apocalypse Chime, Circling Vultures, Word of Command, Illusionary Mask, etc. Are there any ideas in R&D or WotC to ban or errata these kinds of effects to make the rules and processes of the game that much smoother?

Many of the things you’re talking about, we’ve removed from the game, so in the vast majority of formats, they are no longer a thing. One of the downsides to eternal formats is that things seldom leave.
