Rarity in Combined Creatures

New 14 Oct 2022 Asked by rhysticsyphon 24 Comments

Do combined Host/Augment creatures have the rarity of both halves for cards that care about rarity like Lila, Hospitality Hostess and Rare-B-Gone?

As both expansion symbols are revealed when augmented, it has both rarities.

Rare-B-Gone Mechanics

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by alex-brault 23 Comments

Regarding Rare-B-Gone, City in a Bottle and company only work in black border because the comprehensive rules contain a list of which cards were originally printed in Arabian Nights, Antiquities and Homelands (rules 206.3a-c). Hopefully it's obvious why that wouldn't work for Rare-B-Gone's purposes

And City in a Bottle cares about expansion symbols not rarity, so it’s a different variable.

Implementing Rare-B-Gone

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 33 Comments

Re: Rare-B-Gone, couldn't it work in black border the same way Apocalypse Chime and all the other expansion matters cards do, by caring about the original rarity a card was printed at? That way reprints don't impact its effect.

That requires too much knowledge. For example, without access to a database, do you know the rarity of first printing of cards? Does counter target common spell stop a Disenchant? Or a Counterspell? Or a Lightning Bolt?

Rarity Rules Impact

New 26 Sep 2022 Asked by zanmor 18 Comments

Do you think there's any chance rarity could be made to work in eternal by saying cards that care about rarity count any rarity another card has been printed at? So eternal rare-b-gone would hit any card printed at rare even if the particular copy it's targeting is an uncommon printing. Slightly less intuitive but I see it as rules changes meaning cards function a bit differently which happens from time to time.

It means changing rarity would create functional errata. I’m skeptical we would do that.

Precons and Rarity Varying

New 27 May 2022 Asked by j-waffles 48 Comments

In precons, why do the cards all have varying rarities? Pauper is the only constructed format that cares about rarity, but since the precons aren’t randomized like boosters are, something being a rare vs. a mythic rare is kind of meaningless. Can you explain this?

You made Rare-B-Gone cry. (Acorn cards can care about rarity.) We have to put something, so the teams tend to do what they think feels best on a card-by-card basis.

Rare-B-Gone Limits

Does Rare-B-Gone affect Unstable full-art lands?

No, as they are neither rare nor mythic rare.

Rare Basic Lands

New 21 Oct 2017 Asked by blaze-1013 24 Comments

You said basic lands can't be rare, but wasn't Island rare at one point to hide rarity? And on that note, would Rare-B-Gone destroy that Island?

The early years did all sorts of things we’ll never do again. Rare-B-Gone can’t destroy the Island because there’s no way to know if it’s rare. The exact same set had identical cards (with same art) at other rarities.

Rarity in Unset Cards

New 22 Jan 2017 Asked by thegreatmill 28 Comments

Unset cards referring to rarity. "No, because all versions of a card have to be treated identically and we often change rarities with reprints." What about Rare-B-Gone?

I said black border can’t care about rarity. Silver border can and does.

Masterpiece Set Symbol

Masterpieces do have an orange set symbol, so Rare-B-Gone should remove them.

I’ll look into it.

Rare-B-Gone Limits

Does Rare-B-Gone get rid of Masterpieces?

It only gets rid of Rares and Mythic Rares. You basically need the word “rare” in your rarity name.

Rare-B-Gone Query

New 19 Sep 2015 Asked by drawlneedler 23 Comments

Un-Rules question: if I play Rare-B-Gone and there's an Alpha Island in play, does it count as a rare?

The problem is there no way to differentiate between a rare and a nonrare Alpha Island as both use the same art, so I would rule Alpha Island is safe as it is unclear.

Rare-B-Gone Mechanics

Un-rules question: How does Rare-B-Gone interact with special rarity cards? For instance, Time Spiral timeshifted cards, the old book promos or Dack comic promos, or FNM or Judge promos?

Rare-B-Gone works only on Rares and Mythic Rares. Everything else is safe. Note that it specifically looks at the rarity of that particular card so if a card has existed at Rare but you have an Uncommon version, it is safe.

Rare-B-Gone on Planeswalkers

Would Rare-B-Gone work on a flipped Orgins planeswalker?

Yes. It’s still a mythic rare even if the symbol’s on the other side.

Off of Rare-B-Gone, I reveal an M14 Serra Angel, a Modern Masters Æther Vial, and a FTV: 20 Swords to Plowshares. Which ones do I have to discard?

The ones that were rare in the set they were printed. Silver-border world cares about the exact card on the battlefield.

Un-Rules Question: Does Rare-B-Gone get Mythic Rares?

Yes, it does. It destroys rares and mythic rares.

Token Rarity

New 29 May 2013 Asked by doopboopdoop 4 Comments

Don't tokens have rarities, so wouldn't that rarity be determined for Rare-B-Gone?

If a token card is being used, the qualities of that card overwrite anything else.

Clones and Rarity

New 29 May 2013 Asked by yawgmoththeineffable 2 Comments

As a follow up to the Rare-B-Gone question: Do Clones copy rarity? What rarity do tokens have? What about premium-ness (assuming some Super Secret Tech existed where that mattered)?

Clones, like tokens, copy all attributes in silver-bordered world.

Token Premiumness and Rarity

New 29 May 2013 Asked by pyrotempestwing 2 Comments

I heard that in silver-border-land, a card's premiumness transfers to the tokens it creates. Does this apply to rarities, too? Can Rare-B-Gone take out the tokens made by Wurmcoil Engine?

Yes. A token takes on all qualities of the card that makes it including premiumness and rarity.

Rare-B-Gone Interaction

New 29 May 2013 Asked by golgariglenross 6 Comments

How does Rare-B-Gone interact with the Modern Masters cards that switched rarities? It hits my MM Aether Vials but not my old ones?

Un-cards only look at the specific card being affected meaning is that actual copy a rare or mythic rare.

Un-sets Precedent

New 08 Apr 2013 Asked by zemyla 17 Comments

If destroying rares is in the black and red part of the color pie (Rare-B-Gone), where would destroying uncommons and destroying commons be?

I’m not sure Un-sets are the best precedent for anything.
