Akroan Crusader

Changes in Printing Haste Tokens

New 25 Feb 2020 Asked by tybonel13 31 Comments

Has the policy on printing tokens with haste changed (Akroan Crusader situation)?

It depends if the set has things where having haste past the first turn matters. For example. Gingerbrute made it matter in Throne of Eldraine.

Philosopher's Strength

RE: the Traveling Philosopher, the big question for me is why she's a 2/2. She can slap the Akroan Crusader (a trained soldier) into oblivion and live to tell about it, and she can even sacrifice herself to single-handed drop the Cyclops of One-Eyed Pass. Seems pretty amazing for someone who just philosophizes from place to place.

Theros philosophers are just made of a little tougher stuff than Earth philosophers.: )

Token Haste Omission

Why is it that on the red 1/1 Soldier tokens from Theros and the red-white 1/1 Soldier tokens from Gatecrash don't have haste written on them, despite the cards that produce them (Akroan Crusader and Sunhome Guildmage + Assemble the Legion, respectively) stating that they should have haste? The keyword 'flying' is printed on Bird tokens, but 'haste' is not printed on those Soldiers.

Because it seldom matters beyond the first turn and the art for tokens with text boxes is different than the one without. By not listing it we allow development more flexibility to add or drop it from tokens late into development.

Constructed Format Impact

Devotion and Monstrous didn't take it long to make it into strong standard strategies. Do you expect heroic and enchantment creatures to make a dent in constructed format before the next set comes out?

Scry, heroic and bestow have already showed up in high level tournament decks. Scry on the dual lands, Dissolve, Read the Bones and Thassa. Heroic on Akroan Crusader. Bestow on Boon Satyr.

Heroic Mechanic Limits

This might be a question for Tabak but I figure I would ask you since you helped create Heroic. It appears by the way Heroic is worded that it functions from the graveyard. I.E. I target my Akroan Crusader and Agent of the Fates that are in the graveyard with my March of the Returned. If I'm correct; I get a / token and force a sac, then get my guys back to my hand. Is this right?

I am not the rules guy but I do know that it doesn’t work from the graveyard. If it did, it would have to specifically tell you that it does. Tabak can give you the nitty gritty of the rules.

Soldier Tokens

Regarding human soldier tokens, I can see why it would be desirable for Elspeth to make plain soldier tokens (as all other Elspeths do) but surely it would have made sense for, say, Akroan Crusader to make human soldier tokens instead? He's not likely to reappear in a human-less setting, and red does have a card that grants an ability to humans.

You have to remember that we condense similar tokens to the same thing so that we can make a singular token card. (It also simplifies remembering what each token is.) If one white card makes 1/1 white tokens then all cards making 1/1 white tokens make soldiers too.
