Companion App Feedback

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by nben2001 30 Comments

Regarding the companion app: 1) Please give high fives to whoever was responsible for upgrading the life tracker, and 2) ask them for an event history feature, I'd like to reminisce about and compare my prerelease performances

Will do.

Battle Placement

New 18 Apr 2023 Asked by pipebombgf 27 Comments

hi Mark, i'm a little confused about how battles are supposed to be placed. at the prerelease I played, players would cast a battle, place it down in front of me, but then realize they need to read the etb effect and turn it around. I don't need any information on the battle except for its name and the number of counters on it, and its a permanent my opponent owns and controls that doesnt affect any of my permanents. I felt that was most clear when the battle was on its owner's side of the battlefield, text facing them, in front of their creatures or near their life tracker.

Usually you put it on your opponent’s side, so they can easily represent when you’re blocking with creatures.

Understanding Landfall

New 24 Oct 2022 Asked by masterstrix 27 Comments

With the recent change of landfall to deciduous. Would it be possible to have landfall be more like other action words like “dies” or “exile”? So rules text just have Landfall itself mean “whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control” So I.E. Tireless Tracker would read: Landfall: Investigate

You’re asking to turn it from an ability word into a keyword action. Keywords have to line up to an exact line of text, which I don’t think all landfall cards have consistently done.

Confusion over Reminder Text

New 01 Oct 2021 Asked by thezacdaniel 54 Comments

You responded to a question with your own question, something akin to ‘Are people confused with Disturb and Day/Night being in the same set?’ The answer is yes. Every game I played in my prerelease I had to explain to my opponent that Disturb and Day/Night operate independently. Except for the last guy who understood the rules very well. My question, is there any way to ensure that reminder text isn’t simplified to the point of confusion? Because the Day/Night tracker token was the source of confusion.

In retrospect, we might have not wanted to use the day and night icons on things that weren’t daybound/nightbound even if previously Innistrad sets had.

Appreciation for New Cards

New 04 Jun 2021 Asked by coiling-oracle 38 Comments

Hey Mark! Just wanted to thank the mh2 Team for New investigate cards. I started playing in shadow over innistrad so this feels nice and nostalgic for me! High fives all around. (I'd also love to see a tireless tracker Reprint!) :)

I’ll pass along the virtual high five.

Limited-Only Drawback Cards

New 20 Apr 2021 Asked by khanshotfirst 18 Comments

If or when: cards with a Limited-only drawback, akin to Cogwork Tracker but pushed for constructed?

We can make cards that care about factors that matter more in limited and thus are a bigger drawback, but I don’t see a big future in constructed-legal cards that reference things that are limited-only things like drafting.

Keyword Versus Ability Words

New 27 Dec 2019 Asked by evileyeball 34 Comments

In response to landfall being added to tireless tracker you said "We can’t do it for keywords. We might be able to do it for ability words." Why then was opt changed to Scry 1 from its original non scry invasion printing

Because scry became evergreen.

Ability Words Flexibility

New 25 Dec 2019 Asked by lrddphn 24 Comments

If tireless tracker was reprinted in a Zendikar set, would the ability word Landfall be added to the card (assuming landfall was a mechanic in the set)? In other words, are ability words changeable between printings like other italic text?

We can’t do it for keywords. We might be able to do it for ability words.

Gatherer Search Enhancement

New 01 Jan 2019 Asked by ark-no-spoons 45 Comments

Could cards that functionally have ability words (Like Tireless Tracker) be given tags on Gatherer to make them easier to search up?

I could ask about that.

Tireless Tracker and Landfall

New 31 Dec 2018 Asked by mjrpain 36 Comments

Hey Mark, quick question. Why doesn't tireless tracker have the keyword Landfall? The ability is basically Landfall - create a clue.

We don’t use non-evergreen keywords/ability words outside of the sets than use them. We just write it out.

Reprinting Design Mistakes

New 23 Sep 2018 Asked by nayon7 29 Comments

Does a card being considered a break or a mistake make it less likely to be considered for reprint in a supplementary set (like masters) or a promo product? For example Tireless Tracker.

It’s less likely to be a reprint in a Standard-legal set, but if the set doesn’t add it to a format it’s not already in, it doesn’t matter as much.

Tireless Tracker Analysis

New 12 May 2018 Asked by psyllogism 36 Comments

So is Tireless Tracker--a mono-green creature that Investigates (a lot like drawing a card) every time you play a land--a bend or a break?

It probably is a break. Green can draw one card but not multiples without being tied to creatures.

Land Card Drawing Issue

New 11 May 2018 Asked by martinz9-blog 51 Comments

Hi Mark, so if land card drawing is considered a mistake, does that include newer cards like Tireless Tracker or standard Nissa, Vital Force emblem (landfall=draw a card)?

Yes.

Green Draw Restrictions

New 09 May 2018 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 37 Comments

"We’ve been making a problem with green draw for a few years where we’ve been disconnecting it from creatures." Is it still allowed enchantresses and land based draw (like Tireless tracker)?

It shouldn’t have land based draw. You always have land, that’s just draw. The occasional Enchantress is probably okay.

Landfall Keyword Consistency

New 25 Jun 2017 Asked by csdragon 28 Comments

"If ability words aren't technically rules text, can we see say, a Landfall card with the same rules text but without the keyword (if it needed a reprint without other cards with the same mechanic)? So far, no. Cards with key words must be around(?) with the key words." Tireless Tracker has landfall without having the landfall keyword

What I was saying was that if a card has a keyword/ability word, we currently don’t reprint it without the keyword/ability word. We will make cards that functionally act as if they have the keyword/ability word with naming it in sets that don’t use that keyword/ability word.

Tireless Tracker Design

New 16 Mar 2017 Asked by saeiouth-deactivated20230618 26 Comments

How come Tireless Tracker didn't just have "Landfall-Investigate" instead of that paragraph of text? Seems like a lot of work for a small detail.

Vocabulary only makes things easier (for less enfranchised players) when it exists in volume.

Green's Card Draw Mechanics

New 04 Jul 2016 Asked by azurecorsair 33 Comments

"Green’s card draw needs to be tied to its creatures." Or lands, right? E.g. Tireless Tracker and Nissa, Voice of Zendikar?

Or lands, correct. We need to be careful with lands though.

Landfall Keyword Usage

New 28 Mar 2016 Asked by douglasdb3 31 Comments

Maro, Tireless Tracker basically has Landfall. Why not use it?

We don’t list block keywords in blocks that don’t use that keyword.

Green Fight Mechanism

New 02 Jun 2015 Asked by dragontiers 24 Comments

Dear Maro: Is Green still allowed to have repeatable fight effects such as Ulvenwald Tracker and Domri Rade, or is that considered too good for Standard now? Thank you.

It is colorpiewise. I’m not sure developmentally.

Mechanic Color Reasoning

New 11 Jun 2012 Asked by angrylibreta 2 Comments

Why does Nightfall Predator require red in its activation cost to fight, if Ulvenwald Tracker uses fight in mono green?

Nightfall Predator uses red not because green couldn’t work colorpiewise (because it can), but because development was trying to find a way to keep the power level in check.
