The Mending

Narrative Evolution Challenge

New 23 May 2024 Asked by beautifulsoulkitty 1 Comments

Hello Mark. You know you could have done a set like OTJ (bringing characters from different plans on the same) before the Mending, without need of omenpath. Is this a confession that breaking portals and summoning with the Mending was a bad idea?

No. Stories evolve, things change. The Mending was great. That doesn’t mean it’s the way things should always be though.

Tokens and Cards Difference

New 05 Jan 2024 Asked by aalgot 26 Comments

Is there an in universe difference between tokens and cards (I know there were before the mending science the card was the actual literal thing but now science the cards are mana copies to what’s the difference)

There is no creative difference between a creature card and a creature token.

Teferi Lore Trivia

New 19 Dec 2023 Asked by monowhite-lifegain 39 Comments

Hey mark? I think my birthday trivia got lost, I sent it two days ago. I wanted trivia about my favorite Planeswalker, ma boi Teferi.

Teferi first appeared in the Mirage block story. He then played a role in the Urza’s Saga story which took place in the past when Teferi was a young student. He lost his spark in the Mending, leaving an open-ended storyline we didn’t resolve until March of the Machine.Happy Belated Birthday!

Planeswalking Mechanic Evolution

New 23 May 2023 Asked by beautifuldetectiveangel 60 Comments

Before the mending, non-planeswalker could change planes (different ways). With the mending, you removed this feature. It was a huge mistake. 15 years ago, you realise that and rollback. My question is : how did you realise that? Players complaints? Creative team asking to remove this limitation? Mecanical reasons? Commander influence? Thanks

We’re not changing it back because it was a mistake. It was a great decision and created years and years of material. Stories evolve and we realized there were new types of stories and sets we could do, so we made the change.

Impact Comparison

New 03 May 2023 Asked by rgordond 40 Comments

Hey Mark, can you compare the changes you talked about in the article today with the changes brought about by The Mending? Is this a similar change to the multiverse?

Both events had a huge impact on the multiverse. This one is going to be something impacting more individuals. Not a lot of people were aware of The Mending. The Phyrexian War’s impact is felt by almost everyone.

Planeswalkers During The Mending

New 02 Mar 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 33 Comments

What happened to Planeswalkers mid walk when The Mending reached them? Were they trapped in the Blind Eternities and destroyed? Were they shunted to a random world? Were they locked in whatever form they were taking at the time? What Planeswalkers could be so unlucky?

You finished your planeswalk and then couldn’t planeswalk again.

Creating Another Avacyn

How much effort would Sorin need to just make another Avacyn?

As it’s post Mending, I’m not sure he can.

Pre-Mending Walkers Alive

New 23 Jan 2023 Asked by snoozyrobin 54 Comments

Are there any pre mending era planeswalkers still alive that we have not met yet, at least in the present story?

There are some that we’ve heard of, but haven’t met, that theoretically could be alive.

Bant Plane Trivia

New 09 Dec 2022 Asked by baron-von-lucas 55 Comments

Hi Mark! It was my birthday yesterday, and I'm wondering if you had any Trivia on Bant aligned planeswalkers or tribes? Thanks!

We remade planeswalkers in the Mending, so we could power them down, as it’s hard using omnipotent characters in a story. Then we made Amintou, who controls fate, and we’ve found her tricky to use. I do hope to see her again though. Happy Birthday!

Dragon Planeswalkers Rarity

New 05 Sep 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 52 Comments

We have only seen 2 dragon planrswalkers and heard of 1 other( the creator of the original artifical plane that would become Phyrexia). But given the incredibly large number of dragons that have appeared across the multiverse doesn't it stand to reason there might be close to the number of dragon planeswalkers as humanoid? Even accounting for the multitude that were probably cought off guard by the Mending( possibly trapped in non dragon form), 2 seems a very small number. As a dually appointed dragon union representative I would like an answer to these questions otherwise your dragons may Flame Strike.

There are a lot humanoids in the multiverse than Dragons.

Aftermath Change Impact

New 20 Aug 2022 Asked by aringa90 34 Comments

Hello Mark!I know it’s probably too soo to ask…but I have a general question about the “profound change to Magic” expected with Aftermath. The way it was expressed in the article sounded ambiguous to me. Is the change going to affect only Magic “Lore & Background”just the way The Great Mending did, or is this change something deeper that will affect Magic as whole (including gameplay and design philosophy)?

It’s too early to talk about.

Multiverse Changes

Today's stream said something about the multiverse changing following the March of the Machines. Will this change be something on a similar scale to the Mending?

We’ll have to wait and see.

Phyrexian's Ability to Hold Spark

New 28 Jan 2022 Asked by sobek16 229 Comments

Will there be an explanation about how Phyrexians can now hold a spark?

This isn’t my area of expertise, so I’m going to do my best to explain it, but I might get a few small details wrong. Bear me with me.Phyrexians can’t hold a spark. It has to do with the fact that they’re soulless and you need a soul to hold a spark. It’s the same reason some other creature types can’t become a planeswalker (well, without some extenuating circumstance like with Karn). Pre-mending planeswalkers were immune to Phyrexianization based on their ability to have total control over their form. This is not true with post-mending planeswalkers. The Phyrexians are aware of the Multiverse. Prior to the Mending, they used portals to travel between planes, but the Mending shut down the portals (with only once exception that I know of - The Planar Bridge, but even that can’t transport living tissue). Because Phyrexianizing someone removes their soul, it would take away a planeswalkers ability to planeswalk, which is what definitionally makes one a planeswalker. Thus, Phyrexianizing a planeswalker wasn’t a solution to the Phyrexians’ problem. Jin-Gitaxias is on Kamigawa studying spirits made manifest believing that it might hold valuable information for the Phyrexians. It turns out it did and Jin-Gitaxias learned how to compleat a planeswalker without removing their soul/spark. That’s what’s going on. Read the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty stories for more info.

Green Self-Mill Question

Hey Mark. Just read the new color pie article: shouldn’t green by tertiary for self-mill? Dredge, Mending of Dominaria, Binding of the Titans?

Probably.

Sigarda and Cathars' Shift

New 06 Sep 2021 Asked by ursadub 77 Comments

I'm confused - has Sigarda and the Cathars come to embrace witchcraft? Seems like quite the shift. Even Faithful Mending with Avacyns symbol have the floating candles that seem like the witchcraft motif for the set.

The Humans, and their allies, are turning to whatever resources can save them.

Faithful Mending's Ability Blend

New 04 Sep 2021 Asked by darksteelartificer 58 Comments

I know Faithful Mending is a callback to Faithless Looting and that U gets draw then discard, but this card feels off for WU. Is this a bend?

No, white can gain life and blue can draw and discard. Perfectly in flavor.

Awareness of Planeswalkers

New 28 Aug 2021 Asked by silpheed-tandy 78 Comments

You said: "The whole point of The Mending was to make our planeswalkers less god-like.". This makes me wonder: do any planeswalkers suspect that they're characters in a trading card game, and that their trials and suffering exist only because Creative wanted to create interesting storylines?

I have a hunch Urza, Headmaster has a clue.

Queries about Aminatou

New 28 Aug 2021 Asked by anyguy 48 Comments

It's my birthday and I waited to ask trivia for one year :)So do you have anything interesting to say about my favorite Planeswalker Aminatou? I was very excited to see her art in the context of Double Masters 2022. Is she still an 8 on the Venser Scale and is there maybe hope for a new version maybe in a supplemental set, maybe :) ?

Aminatou is in an interesting place. She’s relatively popular, but a tricky character to use creatively. The whole point of The Mending was to make our planeswalkers less god-like. Controlling fate isn’t “powered down”. : )We are looking for a proper place to use her. I can’t promise it will happen soon, but I’m optimistic one day we’ll find the right fit.
