Role Tokens Innovation

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 32 Comments

"Just wanted to say I have really enjoyed the Role tokens in WoE they're a lot of fun and an interesting design!Happy to hear that. They’re my favorite part of the set, and I think have opened the door on a new resource - aura tokens." They're my favorite part too, but we did already have aura tokens from Estrid and Smoke Spirits' Aid, so it will be cool to have more going forward

Something existing as a one-of is very different than it existing as a structural tool.

'You are Already Dead' Card

New 21 Feb 2022 Asked by cleverancho 63 Comments

I vote yes on “You are Already Dead” as a card name. It is flavorful in that it kills a damaged creature and that it implies it was easy, not even costing you a card. Although I prefer instants and sorceries to be verbs like “I shock your creature” or “I commune with spirits”, it still allows you to name the spell alone like “saw it coming.” You don’t need to say “I cast ‘you are already dead’”, you just say “you are already dead”, which is very fun.

The default is instants and sorceries are verbs.

Phyrexian's Ability to Hold Spark

New 28 Jan 2022 Asked by sobek16 229 Comments

Will there be an explanation about how Phyrexians can now hold a spark?

This isn’t my area of expertise, so I’m going to do my best to explain it, but I might get a few small details wrong. Bear me with me.Phyrexians can’t hold a spark. It has to do with the fact that they’re soulless and you need a soul to hold a spark. It’s the same reason some other creature types can’t become a planeswalker (well, without some extenuating circumstance like with Karn). Pre-mending planeswalkers were immune to Phyrexianization based on their ability to have total control over their form. This is not true with post-mending planeswalkers. The Phyrexians are aware of the Multiverse. Prior to the Mending, they used portals to travel between planes, but the Mending shut down the portals (with only once exception that I know of - The Planar Bridge, but even that can’t transport living tissue). Because Phyrexianizing someone removes their soul, it would take away a planeswalkers ability to planeswalk, which is what definitionally makes one a planeswalker. Thus, Phyrexianizing a planeswalker wasn’t a solution to the Phyrexians’ problem. Jin-Gitaxias is on Kamigawa studying spirits made manifest believing that it might hold valuable information for the Phyrexians. It turns out it did and Jin-Gitaxias learned how to compleat a planeswalker without removing their soul/spark. That’s what’s going on. Read the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty stories for more info.

Karn's Name Origin

New 21 Jun 2015 Asked by shadowman2099 65 Comments

Happy Pappy Day! In the spirit of today, do you have any trivia on the Father of Machines, Karn?

Karn was named after the word “cairn” and was a subtle nod toward the fact that he was the repository for the legacy artifacts. Happy Fathers’ Day, everyone!

In the spirit of Marvel vs Capcom, whom would you want to see in Marvel vs Magic Duel Decks or video game? The idea that got me started was Nicol Bolas vs Fin Fang Foom.

There all sorts of fun match-ups: Chandra vs. the Human Torch
Gideon vs. Captain America
Ajani vs. Tigra
Karn vs. the Thing
Kiora vs. the Sub-Mariner
Sorin vs. Blade
Tibalt vs. Daredevil
Ral Zarek vs. Storm
