Batching Cards Potential?

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 1 Comments

Hi Mark, could the rules batch cards that have two different spells on them? Can they mechanically group together split cards, certain MDFCs, cards with adventures?

We for sure can list it out. I don’t know if the rules can handle the description.

Monocolor Set Features

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zbaschtian 5 Comments

If/(foreseeable future)When: New Monocolored Matters set. I know you already did this with Morningtide/Eventide, and I don't consider Adamant or Devotion to lead to the gameplay patterns we're discussing. Most likely hybrid, colorless, cycling and/or DFC/Split Card focused to support limited.

When for sets with monocolor themes. I’m not quite sure what you want if devotion doesn’t count.

Adventure Spell Names

New 11 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 18 Comments

So you said a solid Maybe on the ability for cards to be printed with the same name as spells on split cards, but what about Adventure Spell names? Would that follow the same thinking?

The whole minicard as a separate entity is not something we’ve codified.

Unfinished Color Cycles

New 03 May 2024 Asked by llanowarminotaur 51 Comments

Aside from many intentional cycles that share a word, the word "Revolutionary" appears on exactly five cards, one of each color. The words "Ambitious", "Attendants", "Crowd", "Inheritance", "Maddening", "Solitude", "Unleashed", and "Venerated" currently each sit at four cards, each of a different color. "Appeal" and "Need" are also contenders, depending on how you count split cards. "Dealer" was also in the club until recently, but the new Marchesa, Dealer of Death broke the mold. There are others that are actual intended 4-cycles, like "God-Eternal".When we can we expect these cycles to be completed?

Plot Mechanic Flexibility

New 10 Apr 2024 Asked by tevans-living-life 34 Comments

What happens if I cast one half of a split card, and instead of going to the graveyard, it becomes plotted? Can I only cast the half that I originally played?

If you plot a card, you are allowed to cast any spell on that card. This also applies to MDFCs.

Spree Mechanic Nature

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by pashu111-blog 23 Comments

Hi Mark, I'm hoping you can help settle this now that spoilers have started. Is spree considered a kicker variant, or a split card (with fuse) variant?

Spree is more like a three-card split card with fuse.

Fuse Card Cost Logic

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 40 Comments

Wait why do fuse cards need to cost more? I don’t understand how both effects costing more makes it better to cast at the same time

Let’s say I have a traditional split card with effect A and effect B. Usually A costs a little more than A would cost in a vacuum as you have the alternative to play B. Likewise for B. Now some effects don’t quite equal the cost of their mana cost because we have to cost things in whole numbers, so sometimes the individual costs don’t change because there was some “wiggle room” in the cost.If the card has fuse, you now have a third ability, which means that the cost of A and the cost of B have to account for that. Again, if there’s some wiggle room, maybe you can keep costs the same, but the ability to play the second ability is substantial, so most likely that means an increase in the cost of A or B, often both.

Fuse Mechanic Usage

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by noahmatthews1399 33 Comments

We've seen several iterations of traditional split cards. Is there a particular reason why we haven't seen fuse again? Design or play issues? Is it still a 5 on the storm scale?

Fuse cards force us to make the base effects cost more, so the card really wants you to fuse it, which means it gets played less.

Showcase Split Cards Potential

Is there any chance to have Showcase Treatment for Split cards?

There is a chance, yes.

Fuse Mechanic Usage

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by kingmagni 29 Comments

We have seen many split cards since Dragon's Maze, what happened to Fuse (other than on a single Commander card)?

It’s something we use sporadically.

Permanent Cards with Aftermath

New 07 Feb 2024 Asked by magnadrake 30 Comments

Is it possible to have a permanent card with Aftermath rule-wise? My intuition would be yes because Adventures exist but I'd like to confirm.

I believe Aftermath specifically needs to use instants or sorceries. It was designed as a split card variant.

Red Split Cards

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by quantext 34 Comments

Is there any reason why red has more split cards than any other color? Is it just a coincidence?

It has a touch of chaos. More happenstance is my actual answer.

Battle Orientation

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by aalgot 42 Comments

The reason that people dislike the orientation of battles is that it makes them need to turn their head to read them thus revealing information, so how about including a piece of paper in each booster that explains what checklist cards are so those people can finally realize that this is a non-issue.

This issue was also true for split cards, and those were pretty beloved. It’s an issue, but not a major one.

Split Card Limitations

New 30 Jan 2024 Asked by miztickow 29 Comments

Do you think we'll ever see a split card with split second?

Split second is wordy and split cards don’t have a lot of space for rules text, so I don’t think it’s likely.

TDFC Printing Rules

New 30 Jan 2024 Asked by quinncinerated 18 Comments

Semi-related to the topic of split cards - could the backsides of TDFCs be printed with a different front?

The rules don’t allow it. I have tried (multiple times).

Split Card Names

New 29 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 56 Comments

Are card names on individual halves of split cards counted towards uniqueness? In other words, is it permissible to take a card name that already exists as a standalone and print it in one half of a split, or vice versa?

That topic is open to much debate.

Split Card Challenges

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by cryptic-cruiser 24 Comments

Why are there no split cards that are Story Spotlights?

Smaller art boxes and usually no room for flavor text. Also, the nature of a split card with two minicards don’t lend itself well to a story spotlight.

Fuse Mechanic Missed

New 22 Jan 2024 Asked by cgreyl3 23 Comments

I would like to express my disappointment in the flavor failure of not making Push//Pull fuseable alongside Fuss//Bother. It just seemed like a missed opportunity. Unless there is just some storm scale issue that I don't know about with fuse.

The split cards in the set don’t have fuse (as is the default for split cards).

Split Card Reprint Possibility

New 21 Jan 2024 Asked by whiteskeleton 30 Comments

Would it be possible to reprint one half of a split card on a different split card?

I’m not sure that’s been decided.

Split Cards Appreciation

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by sukusuku-hakutaku 41 Comments

Mark, I just had a spontaneous profound appreciation for split cards. Such a simple idea. What if this card was 2 cards? Can I request more of them, or is there not enough design space?

Split cards are deciduous and will be used when they make sense in a set. I too am a fan.
