Was Sarcomite Myr ever going to be in Phyrexia: All Will Be One?

I think he was in the vision design file for a while.

Interesting Facts About Esper

New 03 Jan 2022 Asked by rightleftintheflesh 49 Comments

Hi Mark! Just turned 20 today, are there any interesting facts about Esper you know of?

The plan had been to save colored artifacts for our return to Mirrodin and the Phyrexian attack of it (as shown through our first one in Future Sight - Sarcomite Myr), but it was such a perfect fit for Esper, we used it there instead. Happy Birthday!

Sarcomite Myr Reprint

Is Sarcomite Myr more likely for a reprint now that colored artifacts are more regular?

Sure. It would need to be on a world with Myr.

Myr Across Planes

New 01 May 2019 Asked by tsukaistarburst 55 Comments

Are Myr exclusive to Mirrodin/New Phyrexia, or is it possible they might exist on other worlds? Or is Sarcomite Myr meant to be a Phyrexian being?

So far they’re exclusive, but I’d love to see them on other planes.

Futureshifted Cards Location

New 06 Jan 2019 Asked by theelectricfrog 49 Comments

Myr have appeared outside of Mirrodin, before. Brudiclad and Sarcomite Myr exist in Dominaria in an alternate future. One that sounds a lot like New Phyrexia reinvading Dominaria, by the way.

Futureshifted cards in Future Sight are not necessarily set on Dominaria.

Artifact Costs Misconception

New 23 Oct 2018 Asked by bimsquid-blog 49 Comments

In your trivia article you claim Alara was the first set to have artifacts with colored casting costs. But Sarcomite Myr, an artifact creature that cost 2U, was printed in Future Sight, two or three blocks previously.

The question specifically said to ignore futureshifted cards from Future Sight.

Contraptions Design Philosophy

New 24 Aug 2016 Asked by jugglervr 62 Comments

You've said that you want to do contraptions exactly as worded on steamflogger boss... But future sight was riddled with things that ended up being done similarly but not exactly (tarmogoyf ~ Delirium boosters, sarcomite myr ~ esper shard, ghostfire ~ eldrazi, lucent liminid ~ nyxians, virulent sliver ~ infect). Why are you making Steamfloger Boss completely immutable while you solve contraptions? Isn't this just making something (that matches exactly) simply to show you can (bad design)?

Doing it in the very next set regardless of whether it fits or not is doing it to prove you can. Waiting for the right spot to properly solve it, is good design.

Colored Artifacts Usage

New 09 Jan 2014 Asked by chardish 10 Comments

We've seen colored artifacts prominently in two blocks (Alara, Scars of Mirrodin), as a cycle in one block (Theros), and as one-off designs in three more places (Transguild Courier, Sarcomite Myr, Reaper King.) What's between them and being considered evergreen?

They are a tool we can use whenever we feel they are appropriate so they are evergreen in that sense. We want artifacts to be colorless the vast majority of the time so we don’t want to make colored artifacts a frequent thing.

Lucent Liminid Discussion

New 23 Sep 2013 Asked by eyeball-frog 10 Comments

Is Lucent Liminid sort of like Nacatl War-Pride, Ghostfire, and Sarcomite Myr in that it represents a card that could have been from a future set, but the set took a different direction?

Not every Future Sight timeshifted card 100% captured the future it hinted at. Some showed one aspect that got used while including other aspects that didn’t.

Card Reprint Decisions

New 30 Mar 2013 Asked by vault756 6 Comments

Is there a particular reason why Sarcomite Myr wasn't reprinted in Scars of Mirrodin or why Ghostfire wasn't reprinted in Zendikar block? It's odd since those 2 cards clearly belong in those 2 sets respectively.

Colored artifacts (with the exception of those with Phyrexian mana in New Phyrexia) didn’t end up happening in Scars of Mirrodin block so the card didn’t fit. Likewise, colorless spells with colored mana cost didn’t happen in Zendikar. Both cards hinted at future flavor but it didn’t line up with the mechanics of that block with that flavor. (One of the problems at guessing at things so far ahead.)

Sarcomite Myr Reprint

New 30 Aug 2012 Asked by silvermagus-blog 3 Comments

Sarcomite Myr seems to be the preview of future sight for the Scars of Mirrodin block (please correct me if I'm wrong) if so is there a reason it wasn't reprinted within the Scars block?

Future Sight cards often hinted at sets without necessarily being in them. We did try to work it in but it never quite fit.

Colored Artifacts Origins

New 15 Jun 2012 Asked by clothinthesand 3 Comments

Before Shard of Alara, how long had R&D been thinking about colored artifacts?

You’ll notice it was in Future Sight as a futureshifted card.A long time basically. We were just looking for the right place to put them. We thought it was going to initially be when we returned to Mirrodin. That’s why the Future Sight card, Sarcomite Myr) hints at Mirrodin.

Foreshadowing and Plans

New 08 Jul 2011 Asked by notesontaste 1 Comments

Was Sarcomite Myr a foreshadowing to the most recent expansion? Will Steamflogger Boss ever get his buddies or is that a question that will need patience to be answered?

Sarcomite Myr was a flavor foreshadowing of Scars of Mirrodin block. The creative team chose to flavor that card because the mechanics felt like they could go into the set that returned to Mirrodin. An earlier set needed to use the new mechanical space (Esper in Shards of Alara) so when we actually got to Scars of Mirrodin the card didn’t fit mechanically. We did spend some time talking about printing it anyway, but in the end, felt that we should only use the future timeshifted cards when they fit just right. As for Steamflogger Boss, there are no immediate plans but I’ve learned to never say never about future designs.
