Defining the Animal Super-Batch

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by reginakasteen 7 Comments

The decision to define the animal "super-batch" by real-world animals seems very strange to me. I suppose it works on Bloomburrow (because you'd separately decided to make all the Bloomburrow animals "real" animals) but it doesn't make a lot of flavor sense. A resident of Ravnica, for instance, doesn't know that a boar is a "real" animal but an indrik is not. They think of them both as part of the natural order. Was it ever considered to define the animal batch by what people in-universe would think of as "animals", i.e., including mythological and fictional animals but excluding sapients and the other categories on your list?

The concern was what was intuitive to the people actually playing the game, not what fictional character might think.

Al-Ghuls' Color Alignment

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by gloryofdawn 7 Comments

My friend and I can't figure out why you think the Al-Ghuls are Black/Green instead of Black/White. Can you elaborate?

They are very much about controlling the natural order of the world. I will say their third color is white.

Moana's Color Transition

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by guardgomabroa 3 Comments

Is it fair to say Moana starts out mono-blue, faces a green conflict, and then becomes simic by the end of the film? Her primary motivation initially is to satisfy her curiosity about the world outside her island, and she's frustrated by how content and focused on tradition her people are. Eventually she resolves the film's conflict by realizing who she really is, connecting with her ancestors, and restoring a natural order that Maui had previously disturbed.

That sounds like an accurate description.

Green's Growth Philosophy

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by jimharbor 35 Comments

Why is green, the color of accepting your place in the natural order, the color of magically improving creatures? For example there are many green spells where a small animal is made to beat a predator by magically growing bigger. Isn't this against green's philosophy of the natural order?

Growth is one of the tools of green. Note that each color has different elements, and every card of that color doesn’t need to hit every element.

Artificial Hiveminds

New 29 Oct 2023 Asked by supaquazi 37 Comments

About hiveminds. I get that naturally occuring hiveminds would be Green/White as it's a naturally occuring social structure, but wouldn't an artificial hivemind such as the borg be Blue/White since the hivemind is unnatural to the species it's being applied to, essentially usurping the natural order in search of perfection?

If the hive mind is technological or psionic in nature, we could consider blue.

Green and Technology

New 06 Jun 2021 Asked by douglysium 43 Comments

This is my first time pitching a question so honestly I’m a bit nervous and I hope you see it. So lately I’ve been doing a lot of research about the colors both mechanically and philosophically, and a lot of that involves reading your articles and listening to your drive to works, and I have a question regarding Green. Does Green’s philosophy hate all technology. I’ve always kind of assumed that it ends up not liking a lot of technology because it prizes the natural order of the world/universe/plane/multiverse as the ideal state and in the eyes of some Green aligned characters a lot of technology would mess with everything’s natural purpose. That and we’ve seen Green characters use technology, such as on Kaladesh, and characters like Nissa don’t go around smashing every building they see. I’ve always assumed that while a Green aligned character can hate all technology such an idea isn’t a requirement to fall under Green philosophically speaking. I was just hoping for some clarification or an answer because I couldn't find, or don't remember, if this was explicitly stated to be the case or not anywhere.

Green, as a default, is distrustful of technology and generally is happy to destroy artifacts. This can vary world to world, and there are natural artifacts that green does like.

Ra's al Ghul Nature

New 29 Aug 2019 Asked by jaxxisr 59 Comments

I don't see black in Ra's al Ghul. His goal is to preserve the natural order of society, and his method is an indiscriminate purge of wicked cities. Am I missing anything here?

He’s the leader of the League of Assassins.

Thanos's Colors

New 06 May 2019 Asked by nezumibloodeyes 64 Comments

Okay so, since It's been a week now I think it's safe to ask: What colors are Thanos? I've been thinking UG since he really doesn't strike me as all that black, maybe even WUG with his whole "saving everyone through balance and restoring the natural order, but planning for everything" deali-o. What does Mark think?

Movie Thanos is white/black. He tortured one daughter to get information out of the other daughter. That’s pretty black.

Thanos and Green Philosophy

New 07 May 2018 Asked by forestd3w 72 Comments

SPOILERS Thanos' goal can be resumed to a status-quo no? He isn't green from being opposed to life. He is from wanting a status-quo and halting the growth of civilization. Take it that way, if a cancer(civilization) grows too big, and it wreak havoc on the body(ecosystem) you remove it right? But it's still living cells (people). Isn't it still green?

WARNING: ACTUAL “AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR” SPOILERS Green’s ultimate goal is Acceptance of the Natural Order. It’s realizing that the way things are is how they’re supposed to be. MCU Thanos’ actions couldn’t be more in conflict with that goal, so there is no way in the world that he is green.

Homunculi's Second Color

New 13 Sep 2017 Asked by uroborus-void 39 Comments

Thematically Homunculi second color seems like it should be green. They just seem to be magical and driven my natural order.

They are artificially created creatures. Green seems like the least likely second color.

Understanding Green's Goals

New 17 Jun 2017 Asked by humanclothing 33 Comments

I've been thinking about Green. Rather than saying that Green's goal is acceptance, could one instead say that Green consciously rejects the notion of pursuing goals?

No, green has a goal but it’s more passive than the other color goals, unless others are trying to change the natural order which is when green gets active.

Growth vs Preservation

New 04 Mar 2017 Asked by supaquazi 35 Comments

Green's summarized statement of "Growth through Acceptance" still feels a bit off. No Green character (outside Blue/Green) actively pursues growth, they accept growth as another part of the life cycle. From how you've defined Green in the past, their only active pursuit, is their preservation of culture, family and the natural order. Preservation/Conservation through Acceptance would define that the best.

Growth implies that they want the current system to continue and thrive.

Green vs Black Conflict

New 15 Nov 2016 Asked by siamkor 66 Comments

Could you please clarify an issue regarding the Green vs. Black conflict? Green is a believer in the natural order, which includes prey and predator. I understand why Green wouldn't want prey going out of its way to become predator (part of Black), but shouldn't it be okay with the notion of true predators taking advantage of the weak (another part of Black, i.e., Vampires, some Demons...)? Thanks!

People confuse “survival of the fittest” between Black and Green. Black’ Survival of the Fittest is the idea that the stronger person will get what they want. Might makes right. If you can take something away from someone else, it belongs to you.Green’s Survival of the Fittest is the Darwinian meaning. Things that can survive to mate pass along their genetic traits. Over time the traits that better allow survival will grow while those that don’t will die out - through natural selection.

Green's Acceptance

New 20 Aug 2016 Asked by umlautsurstromming 40 Comments

"They are characters more about acceptance of the world as it is. Usually a Green protagonist is trying to stop change." But doesn't Green accept that change is itself part of the natural order? I would interpret Green as favoring adapting to change over actively stopping others from changing things.

Usually it is an artificial change. Gattica is a good example of a movie where the main conflict is Green vs. Black with Green being the side you route for.EDIT: The conflict is Green/Blue not Green/Black.

Understanding Green

New 08 May 2016 Asked by humongousbirdbird 65 Comments

Hey Maro! Why is green such a hard color to conceptualize? Like red is emotions and blue in intelligence and self perfection. White is the collective good and black is the singular good but green seems less defined. Is that soemthing u struggle with?

Green is about accepting the world as it is, embracing the natural order. It’s a little more Eastern philosophy than the other colors.

Sith Philosophy Color

New 24 Dec 2015 Asked by dukepaulus 58 Comments

On the Sith being green, if you get into more of the extended universe stuff like the games and books, the Sith believe very firmly in survival of the fittest and fitting into a natural order, part of which is the "Rule if Two", which states that the Sith Lord must have an apprentice that will eventually kill their master and take on an apprentice of their own. In many ways, they're as green as the Jedi.

You are confusing Green’s Survival of the Fittest with Black’s. Green Survival of the Fittest is Darwinian. If a trait isn’t useful, evolution will weed it out. Black’s is “might makes right” - if I’m able to defeat you, we do what I want.

Green’s Acceptance Goal

New 22 Dec 2015 Asked by supaquazi 27 Comments

How can Acceptance of nature be a goal for green, when that is one of the biggest qualifiers to be green? It can't be a goal if it's something they already have.

Their goal is to get everyone else to accept it. They want to stop the usurping of the natural order.

Color Pie Philosophy

New 21 Dec 2015 Asked by false---prophet 48 Comments

I love the color pie. However I feel that the gameplay of magic did not quite reflect the philosophy of each color. For example, running a green ramp deck needs a mindset of "I will take a few hit from the faster deck, but later you will be in trouble ", but in philosophy green wants acceptance which does not match the mindset. Could we have a set that focus on the philosophy of colors? Perhaps when we get to know the origin of colored mana the next time we revisit the eldrazi?

Acceptance of the natural order which is exactly what you just described. “If can survive the initial onslaught and give nature time to do its thing, I’ll win.”

Buffy's Nature

New 05 Dec 2015 Asked by ajolipa 34 Comments

"Jessica's powers aren't natural. She isn't pushing for the status quo. She has no affinity for the natural order." Replace "Jessica" with "Buffy" and this remains true. (Buffy's slayer powers are not natural in origin -- the slayer line is the result of a group of powerful people deciding to infuse a young girl with demon energy to make use of her as a tool in a fight against what they think is evil, which is white, not green.) You finally made a case for Buffy not being green -- thanks!

You’re wrong. The Slayer is a role that you don’t choose but are born into. When one dies, the next is triggered. It’s a natural system. And when you’re triggered you get the natural skills to be a hunter. It’s about as Green as it gets.

Character Color Identity

New 05 Dec 2015 Asked by slowlydryingup 29 Comments

Could you make an argument that Jessica Jones (at least the netflix incarnation) starts out mono-G (instead of mono-B as you said): She seems motivated by a desire to find "where she belongs" rather than unbridled ambition. And as the show progresses, I definitely see a Gruul/Naya streak emerging in a "smash first, ask questions later" kind of fashion.

Jessica’s powers aren’t natural. She isn’t pushing for the status quo. She has no affinity for the natural order. I see no Green in her.
