Goblin Game

Fluros Acorn Justification

New 17 Sep 2023 Asked by wtf-oclock 41 Comments

Probably been asked before but why is fluros of Myra's marvels from unfinity acorn when everything on the card has been in legal magic in the past (goblin game) and was planned in legal magic in the future (talion)

We promised that all cards with partner would be acorn, and it seemed odd to break the cycle having four have partner and one not, so we left it acorn.

Goblin Game Inclusion Reasoning

New 23 Jul 2022 Asked by projectalvingaming 42 Comments

What was the thought process behind including Goblin Game in a standard set as opposed to an un-set? When I read the card for the first time many moons ago, I kept thinking it had to have been a joke card.

The line between an Un-card and a normal card is a fuzzy one. It’s why over half of the new Un-set, Unfinity, is eternal-legal. There are plenty of fun, wacky cards that work within rules and thus should be playable in eternal formats.

Hey Mark, why was “Goblin Game” printed in black border instead of silver border?

Because it works within the rules.

Goblin Game Trivia

My birthday trivia keeps getting lost in the shuffle: Any trivia on goblin game or if not another weird card you were surprised works in the rules.

I remember us asking the Rules Manager about Goblin Game and they said the rules could handle it, so we said, “let’s make it”. If you had asked us ahead of time, I think the majority would have expected to hear it couldn’t be done. Happy Belated Birthday!

The Origin of Goblin Game

New 12 Mar 2020 Asked by berryjon-patternrecognition 60 Comments

Mark, during a recent game of Commander, I played Goblin Game. After the rest of my table finished reading and understanding the card - and laughing, the question was raised - why was this printed Black Border, and not in Silver? It's the sort of thing that wouldn't be out of place in an Un-set, yet it saw a Standard Legal printing.

Many silver border cards started as cards we tried to print in black border, but we were told we couldn’t do. Goblin Games was an odd one where the Rules Manager somehow didn’t stop us. Basically, while quirky, Goblin Game was something the black border rules could handle.

Card Mechanic Feasibility

New 08 Apr 2016 Asked by eyeball-frog 18 Comments

Could we see a functional reprint of Six-y Beast in black border? Goblin Game is in black border, after all, and the mechanic is roughly the same.

Six-y Beast could probably be done in black border (the mechanic not the exact card).

Someone asked the Rules Manager if it worked within the rules and they said yes.

Meddling Kids' Interpretation

New 08 Oct 2015 Asked by bachtigh 18 Comments

Un-Rules question: When Meddling Kids refers to a card's "text box", what part of the card is that? If I choose the word "Goblin", my opponent can't cast Dragon Fodder, but can they cast Goblin Game? What about Ankle Shanker?

The text box is where the rules text, reminder text and flavor text reside. Meddling Kids do not affect a card’s title, mana cost, card type line, power/toughness or any legal text/collector number info.

Un-set Reprints Possibility

New 04 Jan 2015 Asked by lefthandedmoth-deactivated20150 23 Comments

Is there any chance that too-wacky cards (like Goblin Game or maybe even Chaos Orb) originally printed as black-bordered would get silver-bordered reprints?

Chaos Orb, specifically, is on the Reserved List but we’ve done other dexterity cards in Un-sets. As for reprints, we have a rule about Un-set’s that we don’t print things that can be done in black border. That makes reprints tricky. Also, we don’t do Un-set’s often so I’d rather use as many slots as possible to do new cards.

Sub-game Black Border Potential

New 04 Jan 2015 Asked by 20percentcrueler 20 Comments

"Do you think we will ever see another sub-game card in black border?" MaRo: "I assume one day." Considering that Shaharazard is banned in Vintage and is basically treated as a dexterity card, wouldn't that seem unlikely? I mean, those cards greatly screw with tournament play and are even worse than Sensei's Divining Top when it comes to match length. Personally, I hope that there is never another sub-game card ever printed in black border. Unless you mean Goblin Game type cards.

If we made a sub-game card in black border (and we never may), we’d make it not tournament relevant.

Goblin Game Status

New 25 Aug 2014 Asked by sigmasupreme 9 Comments

Why is Goblin Game a Black-border card? It could easily be silver border but it isn't.

If a card can be back border, we make it black border. Silver border are for cards that can’t be black border.
