Consequences of Unanswerable Questions

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 3 Comments

If I ask a question with Frankie peanuts that can’t be answered truthfully ever such as “is the answer to this question no” I assume the game doesn’t become a draw because that would be unfun, but what happens instead? Does it just fail?

Yes, an unanswerable question goes unanswered.

Un-cards Casual Play Impact

New 08 Jan 2023 Asked by j-waffles 21 Comments

Do you believe the acorn/eternal divide in unfinity will further delegitimize existing silver-bordered cards in casual play? The fact that some Un-cards ARE going to be commander legal now seems like it will only further the notion that the other Un-cards are strictly off limits in Magic’s flagship format for casual play. Regardless of if they are “Un” for rules reasons (like Frankie peanuts or goblin haberdasher) or purely due to their border (as luck would have it or beast in show) or somewhere in between (host/augment), many players are already on the fence about allowing Un-cards, even in non-tournament play. By pointing out specifically which new Un-cards are “in-bounds”, people playing casually might feel even LESS inclined to allow for the “out-of-bounds” designs, like my sweet sweet elephant man Frankie.

I’ve heard it working both ways. Some groups finally play with some Un-cards and enjoy them, so they’re more willing to let people Rule 0 in others.

Mindslaver Gameplay Query

New 08 Apr 2022 Asked by 0woah 31 Comments

So in horrendous hypothetical, if I have mindslavered an opponent and have Frankie peanuts with assault suit o n the battlefield, am I able to ask that opponent a question and answer as themselves, essentially locking them out?

Mindslaver let’s you make decisions about how the cards are played; it doesn’t let you you talk as if you are that player. And even if it did, you don’t have to abide to answers you didn’t give.

Perspective on Un-Cards in Commander

New 17 Jul 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 49 Comments

"The Un-sets are a very weird product" Some feedback you might find interesting. I'm a casual Commander player but I'm against silver bordered cards in the format. I would be fine with playing cards like Super-Duper Death Ray or Surgeon Commander but I have no desire to play with cards like Mother of Goons, Frankie Peanuts or Cheatyface. Commander is already complicated and the last thing I want are additional cards that add extreme ambiguity and unsolvable rules questions into the game.

It’s not all or nothing. You can play with the Un-cards you enjoy and not play with ones you don’t. If your group is okay with it, a few Un-cards can be very fun.

Silver Bordered Cards Concerns

New 10 Jul 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 76 Comments

"It’s all a matter of perspective. Commander has rules that don’t exist in most formats." I think this isn't a fair comparison. If you try to play Frankie Peanuts as your Commander in a game of Magic, you'd see very quickly why a lot of players don't like it when cards don't have clear and official rules. When you play those cards with black bordered cards in constructed Magic it creates uncertainty and confusion. PLEASE don't put silver bordered cards in black bordered products.

Frankie Peanuts has caused less rules confusion than Chains of Mephistopheles or Humility. The idea that black border Magic is different because its cards never cause gameplay confusion is simply untrue.

Recalling an Exceptional Game

New 02 May 2020 Asked by ricketyeng 129 Comments

FYI the world's BEST game of Magic has been played by my wife and I and no other can hope to top it: An Enter the Dungeon subgame under the table. Old Fogey played. Frankie Peanuts used his question and Sword of d&d to make a dragon. BINGO was achieved. A 10/10 BINGO was successfully blocked to survive with 1 life. Slaying Mantis was thrown. Frankie Peanuts - "will you give me sweet sweet kisses until end of turn?" meant the final turn included much kissing. And this was all under the table.

I congratulate you on playing the best ever game of Magic. Thanks for sharing.

Frankie Peanuts Abiding Queries

New 08 Mar 2020 Asked by neitherjakenoramir 60 Comments

Loving Unsanctioned! I have a question about what it means to abide by my answer to Frankie Peanuts. My only creature is Chicken à la King. My opponent's Frankie Peanuts asked me, "Will you block this turn?" and I answered "Yes." After seeing my opponent's attacks, can I tap Chicken à la King to its own ability (roll a die), thus making it impossible for me to block? Or must I make a good faith effort to keep my statement truthful?

There’s is where Frankie Peanuts gets tricky. If they ask “Will you block?” and you say “Yes,” that means you’ll block if able when the time comes”, so yes you can tap your Chicken a la King to roll a die before your opponent declares an attack and be unable to block when the time comes. If instead they ask “Will you block with Chicken a la King?” and you say yes, now you can’t tap it because you’ve said you’ll specifically block with it. The trick is asking very, narrow specific questions.

Frankie Peanuts' Truthful Clause

New 04 Mar 2020 Asked by geckyjuno 33 Comments

Wouldn't the "that player answers the question truthfully" clause on Frankie Peanuts prevent the questioned player from answering yes to a question that they clearly know that they couldn't fulfill?

It’s a matter of making the question clear. “If I destroy the equipment right now, will you kill the creature the equipment was on?” Then you can’t answer “yes” if you can’t because you have to answer truthfully. If you ask “If I ever do this, will you?” you can say “yes” as that is your intent because you don’t know when it will happen. In short, Frankie Peanut requires very concise and simple questions to get the result you want.

Frankie Peanuts in Multiplayer

New 04 Mar 2020 Asked by tlblitz 39 Comments

For Frankie Peanuts in multiplayer, what about using him like a binding contract of sorts? Propose a political deal, external to his ability ("I can destroy [third party]'s Swiftfoot Boots, and in exchange I'd like you to kill the creature wearing them"), then use the ability to ask a question pertaining to the deal ("Will you abide by that arrangement?" or to another player "Will you interfere with that deal?")

The problem is that you are only obligated to do any action if able. “Will you kill the creature if I destroy the equipment?” “Yes.” “Okay, I did my part.” “Sorry, I don’t have a kill spell.”

Frankie Peanuts and Future Questions

New 04 Mar 2020 Asked by kriellya 29 Comments

Because I can't stop thinking about Frankie Peanuts... how about a question that depends on *future* information? For example:: Will you counter my first spell if I play only one spell this turn? Are they effectively compelled to treat it as fact that I *will* only play one spell until I actually play the second card, forcing them to counter (or not counter) the first spell I play even though I plan to play additional spells, so long as the first spell is fully resolved first?

You can’t asked linked contingency questions as there is no way to properly answer them. Ask things that involve a single task - “Are you going to counter the next spell I cast?”

Frankie Peanuts and Game Actions

New 03 Mar 2020 Asked by xenrac 35 Comments

If an opponent is unable to abide truthfully by what they said to a Frankie Peanuts question, do they have to prove that they couldn't? Like "Will you counter my second spell?" "Yes" but then they use their last counter on my first spell because it's too good. Would they have to reveal their hand when I run out my second spell and they had lied?

They only have to do a promised action if they are able to do it at the time. They don’t have to forego action to increase the chance of being able to do a promised action. If they say “yes” to “will you counter my second spell next turn?”, they are promising that if they are able to counter your second spell when you cast it, they will. If their hand doesn’t have any countersorlls in it as they countered your first spell, well they weren’t able to do it. If they do have a counterspell with the mana to cast it when you cast your second spell, they are obligated to counter it.

Frankie Peanuts Question Limit

New 03 Mar 2020 Asked by 22bebo 58 Comments

Is a question like "Will you counter the first spell I cast this turn and not counter the second spell I cast this turn?" okay to ask with Frankie Peanuts or is it just two questions stacked on top of each other in a trench coat?

It’s two questions.

Defining a Hat

Is Timmy Power Gamer wearing a hat in his new artwork? Is the Goblin Token wearing a hat?

From the FAQ for Goblin Haberdasher: What counts as a hat?A hat is a garment worn on the head that’s not part of another garment. Hoodies, for example, are not hats. Items that only cover the face and not the top of the head, such as a face mask, are also not hats.

Loxodon Gangster Trivia

Hi Mark, can I please get some birthday trivia on the Wooliest of Loxodons?

I designed Frankie Peanuts in Unhinged originally just as a mechanical card, not knowing the flavor. I eventually decided to flavor it as a gangster and a loxodon gangster seemed funny.Happy Birthday!
