Possibilities for Mood Swings

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 8 Comments

you mention 'mood swings' quite often, and you clearly have a lot of faith that it is a good game despite not being able to get it to production. have you considered doing a kickstarter for it? is that something that you would be allowed to do given your position at wotc? with your game design notoriety and dream-infiltrating levels of popularity it would seem like a pretty viable route to take.

I don’t think Kickstarter is currently a viable option, but I haven’t given up the fight. My plan is to get it to print someday. For those unaware, Mood Swings is my mass market TCG that I’ve been trying to get made for twenty-six years.

Shift in Green removal Cards

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by hedgeiii 5 Comments

Hey, Mark! Quick one- I've been noticing a lot of "bite" cards in green (i.e. Hunter's Talent) the last few years, and not as many fight cards. At first, I thought this was "too much", but I quickly realized the hoop for green removal is already pretty daunting, and maybe this is just the direction you're going in.
Am I reading this right?

We have been increasing the number of “bite” spells (deal damage equal to power) to help with green removal in limited.

Formatting Change Query

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 0 Comments

I’m personally fine with the shortening of “enters the battlefield” to just “enters”, it’s what I say out loud most of the time anyway, but wowza something feels super wrong reading “whenever a creature you control enters” and it not being worded as “whenever a creature enters under your control”. It gives me the same feeling as ordering water and getting carbonated strawberry milk, or taking a bite of a BLT and finding an entire uncut pickle inside. There’s literally nothing those two have in common with magic cards, I’m just using them to explain my level of discomfort and confusion. What led to this formatting change?

It allows us to use one less word (“you control” vs. “under your control”).

On Spells and Green Color

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by flakmaniak 5 Comments

Are bite spells that can hit players in-pie for green? Obviously they're in-pie for red... Also on the topic of green spells hitting players (though largely an unrelated question), spells like Hurricane. Which is the bigger issue with them: Hitting players unconditionally being out-of-pie for green, or the "killing everyone" gameplay issue? I assume those are both significant.

They are not in pie for green.

White's Card Draw Mechanics

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by shadowman2099 41 Comments

I gotta say, I am not a fan of the "once per turn" draw in White. It just doesn't have the same mechanical bite that other colors have like Red's impulse draw/rummaging or Black's sacrifice for power. Can we see more of a push in forms of White card draw that thematically fit, like charity (Secret Rendez-Vous), compensation (Discerning Financier), and retribution (Esper Sentinel) with less ETB card draw and "draw a card because you did something" (Wedding Announcement, Welcoming Vampire)?

The flavor is white draws long, that is it sets up the proper condition and then gets rewarded with card draw over time. It’s slow, methodical card draw.

Rules for Creature Fights

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by lazcarno 8 Comments

"Can the rules support "all creatures fight each other"?" "Not without getting into a lot of specificity, and I’m not sure that rules text fits on a card." Couldn't you get the desired result with concise text by saying "each creature deals damage equal to it's power to each other creature?"

That’s not exactly the same thing.

All Creatures Fight/Bite Spell

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by braveswordwielder 5 Comments

A theoretical “all creatures fight/bite” spell seems like it’s going to be Day of Judgment (or at least Duneblast) in 99% of situations. Seems like it goes squarely into the “deathtouch + ETB fight” category to me, even if a functional template could be figured out.

It would probably be multicolored, if we did it.

Creatures Fight Mechanic Feasibility

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by bethlehemslouch-blog 2 Comments

Regarding "all creatures fight each other," couldn't the rules handle "each creature deals damage equal to its power to each other creature?". Obviously whether you'd want to make that card is another question.

We could do that, but it’s more all creatures bite than all creatures fight.

Not without getting into a lot of specificity, and I’m not sure that rules text fits on a card.

Instant vs Sorcery Regret

New 23 May 2024 Asked by wizardshark 7 Comments

I've heard you say that you regret separating Instant and Sorceries, that is, that you wish you could just make Instants a Sorcery that you can cast off your turn (or something to that effect). Why can't you change that in sets going forward? Is it simply too ingrained in the game at this point?

Inertia is a hard force to fight against. The biggest strike against the instant super type is it would make old cards with text that functionally works not do what they say.

Black Fight Spells

New 06 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 19 Comments

Could Black have fight spells if it gave your creature Deathtouch?

Black doesn’t get fight. It can just kill the creature directly.

Green Buff Spells

New 05 May 2024 Asked by zopandrel 26 Comments

hi MaRo, looking at the various mecanic each colors has, that come back every set ( counterspell or draw for blue, kill spell or reanimate for black, damage of impulsive draw for red, ramp or bite on green ) its quite safe to see why those keep coming back, tuned a little or improved for the powercreep, since those are fondamental to the color on top of being useful as a whole. However there's one thing that come back, yet I'm always confuse of why, given how seemingly weaker than most other effect it is, that being : green buffing spells. Things like "gain +2/+2" or "+1/+3". Given how the game evolve, I always wondered, why those low cost spells with simple stat increase spells keep coming back ? Are those viewed as useful enough nowadays to be worth making ? Or are those easy to make, cards that help fill the lowest rarity ?

Those spells see plenty of play, especially in limited formats.

Fight Spells in Limited

New 27 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 32 Comments

Aren't bite and fight spells in Limited a "win more" effect? Usually, the person behind is doing 1 on 1 trades while the person ahead can kill creatures without trading.I understand bite and fight spells are to make green stronger in these environments, but this seems like an issue

Each color needs ways to answer creatures in limited, where your one spell removes one creature threat.

Strength of Green in Limited

New 26 Apr 2024 Asked by two-blue-stripes 45 Comments

Can I ask you to pass on feedback to the testing teams for limited to please stop giving Green such pushed removal? Green removal is almost always "Bite" rather than "Fight" effects now, often pumps the creature (sometimes permanently), usually for three and sometimes even two mana, and often at instant speed.

The trade-off for this used to be that Green's removal was vulnerable and conditional because it was reliant on creatures, but Green's creatures are so pushed these days and limited is so creature focused that cards like Throw from the Saddle and Clear Shot play just like Doom Blade and Murder, comparable or better to what Black (the "removal colour") gets.

I worry that it distorts the roles the colour pie plays in limited magic. It certainly detracts from my enjoyment of it.

Green historically has been the weakest limited color. We’re trying to help fix that.

Color Representation in Worlds

New 23 Apr 2024 Asked by krobat 39 Comments

What exactly is meant when a world "leans" towards one color, like Innistrad towards Black or Thunder Junction towards Red? The color balance of the sets are still the same, and the mechanical color pie doesn't change. Is it just a flavor thing?

It means we have to fight to have that color not be over represented.

Possibility of Provoke's Return

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by violet-returned 27 Comments

I know at least one person for whom Provoke is their favorite mechanic of all time, is there any chance we'll see it return to a premiere set someday?

Fight becoming evergreen has made provoke returning a bit of a challenge.

Color Pie Question

The combination of colors can do it colorpiewise.

Creature Abilities Limit

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 17 Comments

Can a green/black hybrid give a creature death touch and have it fight/bite?

No, Black doesn’t get fight. And even in monogreen, although it can do both things individually, the combination of the effects does something green doesn’t do (aka destroy a creature).

White's Combat Mechanics

No, it can deal damage to attackers/blockers though.

Keyword 'Bite' Consideration

When or if: Keywording "Bite"?

If. Keywording it doesn’t result in most of the rewards a keyword gets us.
