You’re welcome. : )

Chicken Errata Update

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by amnesiamark 32 Comments

Could we get the errata on chickens up on gatherer? I actually just last weekend played with a cube that included all of the chickens and nobody I played with was aware of such errata.

The errata is coming with the release of Unsanctioned, so soon.

I'm a big fan of blast from the past in cube

That’s another card I hear gets used a lot.

Silver-Bordered Cube Choice

New 25 Nov 2019 Asked by badatcommander 23 Comments

If you were designing a cube and decided to put exactly one silver-bordered card in it, which would it be?

I belue e the most popular silver-bordered card in cubes is Who//What//Where//When//Why.

Playtest Card Rarity

New 08 Nov 2019 Asked by peteyvonwho 27 Comments

Do the playtest cards have any indication of what rarity they are supposed to be? I am working on a common/uncommon cube, and would like to add a couple of these to the cube.

I don’t believe they have a rarity.

Commander Legends Insight

New 30 Oct 2019 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 54 Comments

As one of the first people to have created a Commander Cube and pioneered discussions on the format, Commander Legends seems like a love letter written specifically to me. (So thanks!) Is it the "innovation product" for Magic in 2020, or are there other surprises up your sleeves?

Commander Legends is the innovation product for 2020.

Praise for Unstable Set

New 16 Oct 2019 Asked by dienekes101 33 Comments

Mark, now question but started following blogatog recently. I wanted to thank you for silver border magic. Unstable is my favorite draft; I loved it so much I drafted it until the LGS ran out of people to fill my pod! (Shout out to your half kitten-half kitten). UST got me hooked on draft and I’ve been drafting standard ever since. I have now built my own Unstable cube, seeding “packs” with favorite Hascon/Christmas/Un-cards. Really excited about Unsanctioned and MLP crossover. Thanks so much!

You’re welcome. Always happy to hear from Un-fans.

Draft Format Suitability

New 11 Oct 2019 Asked by mgmegadog 47 Comments

Will the new cards in Unsanctioned function well in a draft format? My Un-cube needs to know!

The new cards were designed very much with Commander and Cube in mind.

Weapons Rack Inspiration

New 08 Oct 2019 Asked by bashleytrashley 21 Comments

hi mark! I was wondering if weapons rack was in any way a callback to serrated arrows from everyone's favorite set, Homelands? (my friend and I made a cube for it) :D also could I get an update on koth's position on the venser scale?

It wasn’t a conscious inspiration.

Adventure Cards Text

New 25 Sep 2019 Asked by marqueskot 31 Comments

Mark, how come some of the adventure cards have reminder text but others don't. I really like the cards, and I am excited to put them in my cube, but I am worried that cards without reminder text will confuse newer players in how they work.

Sometimes at higher rarities, we leave off reminder text to fit in longer rules text.

Designing for Fun

New 03 Sep 2019 Asked by gynoidpoet 59 Comments

I've spent some time delving into cube as a way to approach magic. But the more I do so, the more I tire of people playing with the same famously busted cards every time, deeming everything else inferior if not worthless. So now for my latest design project, I've found myself adopting rarities, and scouring sets past for forgotten fun cards! I want to know, did you ever have an experience like that as a magic designer? Realizing that powerful didn't necessarily mean fun?

That’s a lesson you learn early on.

Gratitude and Inspiration

New 27 Aug 2019 Asked by righteousforest 49 Comments

I just want to thank you for all the work you do here and in your podcast and design articles. I had stopped playing Magic many years ago but had been doing story research on Ravnica for my d&D campaign when I stumbled upon your design column, and I just started reading article after article and it filled me with an urge to return to Magic after 7 years so I could build decks and design cards of my own! My custom-card-filled Planechase cube has become one of my favorite passion projects ever.

You’re welcome. I’m always happy to hear my work has impacted people. : )

Snow Mana Rationale

New 06 Aug 2019 Asked by slushyftk 29 Comments

Sometimes I'll handpick basic lands to match the flavor or feel I'm trying to give a deck or cube. As I'm building a deck that uses the snow mechanic for the first time, I'm realizing that my aesthetic options are limited. This is certainly a small frustration, but is there any reason why snow mana isn't just 'mana produced by a basic land (but with a few exceptions)'?

If snow mana was just mana produced by a basic land then it would net you basically no upside as there is zero challenge to making it happen.

Request for Foil Reprints

New 31 Jul 2019 Asked by metallix87 33 Comments

Hey Mark, can I make a weird request? There are a few old Portal cards that I and others need in foil for Cube. Can you try to push them into a future Horizons or Masters-esque set? The cards are: Omen, Fire Ambush, Three Visits, and Devastation.

I can pass along the info.

Token Design Update

New 22 Jul 2019 Asked by cptawesome42 56 Comments

Is the new token design in Core 2020 going to be carried through to future sets or is it a special thing for the set? I absolutely love them and now have to start hoarding them for my cube...either way massive high fives for those included.

That is the new token frame. We will continue using it.

Un-Cube Experience

New 28 Jun 2019 Asked by bassimelwakil 17 Comments

I skimmed through your podcast to hear your thoughts on the Uncube at London! I was Aaron’s second head! It was so much fun. It was nice to hear your thoughts since I didn’t really get a chance to say hi to you. The owner of the cube doesn’t seem active online sadly. :(

The Un-cube was a lot of fun. There were cards in it (from my “Extra Pulled” comic in The Duelist) that I’d never played.

Silver Border Reserved List

New 14 Jun 2019 Asked by squibbleable 17 Comments

Are functional reprints of reserved list cards allowed in silver border? Asking for my cube

They are not.

Inspiration for Cube Building

New 29 May 2019 Asked by jacethebeltsculptor 37 Comments

Modern Horizons has been the set that finally gave me the push to build my own cube! The subtle interplay of cards and abilities from all over Magic's history is a thing of beauty- high fives all around!

The high fives never stop.

Empathy in Creation

New 25 May 2019 Asked by blue-jacket 23 Comments

Happy Birthday! The King Crabs of the world better watch out! I think the tip I took most to heart was an extrapolation of making things for other people and not just for yourself. Really just thinking about what other people like, rather than focusing on myself. Helps a lot in building a cube, playing games so everyone has fun, and life in general. Seems so simple and obvious, but we all get stuck in our own little worlds sometimes.

It’s so easy to only see the world through your eyes.

Appreciating War Finales

New 10 May 2019 Asked by deadinthestreet 30 Comments

Among so many other cards, the finale cycle in WAR is so awesome! I play them in my vintage cube and got to cast the white one for 11, into the green one for 12 the next turn for myr battlesphere and swing for like 600 damage. Thanks for so many awesome cube cards, I’m really looking forward to modern horizons 🤓

I’m happy you’re happy. : )
