Commander Legends

Possibility of Multiplayer-Focused Booster

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by izzet-always-r-versus-u 5 Comments

As mentioned, the odds of another Conspiracy set are low. What about specifically a multiplayer-focused booster set, without the "draft matters" aspect? Or do Commander Legends sets mostly eat up that space?

I do think the chances of a multiplayer-focused booster are still good.

Alternatives for Set Additions

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by brendo 3 Comments

Since the decision seems to be that you won't be returning to blocks, have you guys considered other ways of including additional sets for beloved planes? I think some interesting ways to do it could be by having modern horizons/commander legends sets focused on a single plane.

The mixing and matching of old mechanics would make it tricky to do a Modern Horizons set on one world.

Commander Legends Love

New 26 May 2024 Asked by painfully-bisexual 0 Comments

Happy birthday! Other people are sharing how magic's affected them so I'll do the same :D I started back in 2020ish, and bought so many commander legends packs I swear they're half my collection 😅 it's wonderful seeing the love and dedication you and everyone else put into this game, and easy to see how much the game means to you and everyone else working on it. I took the name Ashiok for myself because, well, Ashiok means so much to me! And the reason stuff like that can even happen is because of people like you. Thank you.

Commander Cards in Legacy

New 21 May 2024 Asked by tameryourentertainer 0 Comments

One part I don't get about the discussion of not being able to make cards not legal in Eternal formats but still legal in commander is: haven't you already used that tech? Like commander legends sets or the commander exclusive cards in precons. Or is there some unforseen limitations to that?

Those cards are all legal in eternal formats which include Legacy.

On Future Partner Cards

New 04 May 2024 Asked by sapphicvalkyrja 18 Comments

I know Partner has some issues, but I do hope we continue to see them in small doses. The Vorthos in me can't play them without strong thematic/lore-appropriate pairings. This is especially true of the Commander Legends ones, which feature favorites of mine from the lore that I would love to play, like Sengir, the Dark Baron and Serra, Radiant Archangel

Partner with is still a tool available to us.

Non-Premier Planeswalkers

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by thenuclearotaku 28 Comments

Quick follow-up to my previous planeswalker question: since non-premier sets have introduced planeswalkers before (Aminatou, Daretti, Wrenn), is it possible that non-premier sets a la Modern Horizons or Commander Legends could be used to confirm desparked walkers too?

It’s possible.

Changing Card Templates Over Time

New 08 Feb 2024 Asked by j-waffles 27 Comments

How come cards like the “will” cycle from commander legends or the free spell cycle from commander 2020 say “if you control a commander” and not “if you control your commander”. The VAST majority of the time these are the same thing, so I’m curious why it was decided to have them be worded the way that they are

Sometimes templates change over time.

Mechanic Rule Updates

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by thepiebandit 14 Comments

For a mechanic you feel is outdated, would you ever consider updating the rules for it? I.e. just adding ward 2 to morphs and manifests? R&D has changed rules for power level reasons in the past (cascade, companion) though always to make it weaker.
If old draft formats would be a problem there could always be a limited only rule to play it as first designed (similar to commander legends granting partner to mono colored legends in draft)

It depends what the change is. We have updated how some mechanics work, like convoke, as an example.

Commander Legends Design

Was there ever an article on a design skeleton for Commander Legends-style sets and how they differ from a premier set?

There was not.

Hope for Conspiracy Return

New 04 Dec 2023 Asked by itylas 30 Comments

I know Conspiracy 2 had issues (a lot of which I don’t think was the sets fault mind you), but I absolutely loved both conspiracy sets and hope to see another one in the future. Maybe even Commander Legends Conspiracy could be cool. Just wanted to voice that there is at least one fan hoping to see it return someday

I could imagine us doing a “draft matters” set without it also being multiplayer.

Birthday Trivia Request

New 01 Dec 2023 Asked by metttherogue 53 Comments

It is my birthday, and as is only right, I demand (politely) birthday trivia from either of my favorite charactes: Calix or Kangee please and thank you

I designed Kangee because I really wanted a bird lord. The card ended up on the weak side, and it was one of my biggest regrets of Invasion. I’m glad he got redone in Commander Legends.Happy Birthday!

D&D Set Success Impact

New 25 Sep 2023 Asked by boymeetsanime 33 Comments

Hi Mark! After putting many, MANY hours into Baldur's Gate 3 I've now revisited Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate and think the flavour on the various characters who show up is fantastic and I can't wait to build a few EDH decks using my favourite characters and backgrounds!! Does the success of the game give an increased chance of another D&D set? Regardless, please give high-fives to the relevant people who created the set and Background mechanic!

High fives shall be given. Whether or not we do more D&D sets is due to a giant number of factors, but D&D successes only help.

Commander Legends Universe Beyond

Is a Commander Legends set possible with Universe Beyond IPs?

It’s not off the table as an option if it’s the best fit for the property.

-1/-1 Counters Future

New 04 Jul 2023 Asked by zorroaburrito 25 Comments

Where could we possibly see new -1/-1 counter cards? Modern Horizons? Commander Legends? Could a JMP pack use them? Can they show up in a set's Commander decks even if they're not in the set? (Sorry for the long-winded question; I just miss persist)

Supplemental sets are the most likely place.

Design Starting Point

New 20 May 2023 Asked by notmakingablog71 20 Comments

Are there any sets where you don't start the design skeleton at common, I.e. commander legends, planechase, master sets (sets built focused on cards in higher rarities)?

We start design by coming up with the larger themes and mechanics. Usually when we start putting the set together, we begin by making the commons. A mechanic working at common is usually a good sign that it will fit the structure of a set.

Commander Legends Scope

New 07 May 2023 Asked by kurtvanarsdale 28 Comments

I feel like a Commander Legends set would be a good place for the exploration of the history of a plane. Is there any reason why this might be avoided?

We usually like to go a bit wider on in-universe Commander Legends sets.

Core Sets Appreciation

New 03 May 2023 Asked by yuleooze 37 Comments

Hi Mark! I just realized why I miss core sets: they are just cards! The sets are uncomplicated by trying to change the game or the surrounding politics, they are not beholden to the story exactly and can just make cards. Note that this is not a request for sets that take place on more than 1 plane or for less story but id love to see more products that have this lack of baggage.

I think Modern Horizon and Commander Legends sets (and to some degree Jumpstart sets) are doing this.

Astrotorium's Possibilities

New 18 Apr 2023 Asked by titania776 25 Comments

If a set doesn’t have a specific plane that it is tied to like Commander Legends can cards be mechanically or flavor wise set on the Astrotorium?

It’s not something we’ve done before.

Frequency of Bonus Sheets

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 157 Comments

Please don't overdo the bonus sheets and crank the frequency up to an 11. We already have a bonus sheet in every premier set called "The List" and numerous other products where reprints are available (i.e. Commander decks, Secret Lairs, Commander Legends, Jumpstart). Additional bonus sheets should be infrequent, very thematic and a net positive to Limited environments. Maybe once every two years or so.

Here’s the question for you all: How often should we be doing a bonus sheet (Strixhaven, The Brothers’ War, March of the Machine, etc.)?

Commander Legends Drafting

New 12 Mar 2023 Asked by born-hurt 29 Comments

Looking at which Commander Legends products to order for myself. Can you confirm if the set is draftable under normal draft rules or commander draft rules (1 vs 2 card selections per pass)

The Commander Legends sets use the Commander drafting rule of two cards.
