Consulting Commander Rules

New 16 May 2024 Asked by gevth 6 Comments

I’m going to hijack a previous question you answered to ask something I’ve been curious about for some time:Do you have to ask the Commander Rules Committee for their input when you introduce an element that affects directly the rules of the format? I’m talking about planeswalker commanders, partner, partner with, backgrounds, companion and the likes.

We do run it by them.

EDH Design Impact

New 16 May 2024 Asked by machinepriestexemplar 12 Comments

"Designing cards is different than determining functionality of the format." [In regards to the commander format]But partner and planeswalkers that can be your commander HAVE messed with functionality of the format. The format was designed initially to use a single legendary creature, and now you've made 5 different options that intentionally changed that parameter (planeswalker commanders, partner, partner with, backgrounds, companion). I am not claiming whether those mechanics are bad or good, but you saying Wizards of the Coast has just made cards for EDH but hasn't messed with the functionality of the format feels disingenuous, because that isn't really the case. The line that's being drawn doesn't feel straight, it appears to be quite squiggly and faded at points; that, or it's a result of compromising what can and can't be changed.

Card designs impact formats. Absolutely. That wasn’t what I was saying. I was saying that we don’t make decision about how the format of Commander is structured. For example, I can make all the hybrid cards in the world, but if the team who decides what’s legal in deck construction doesn’t allow a monowhite deck to play a white hybrid card, there isn’t anything I can do about that. Card design impacts formats, but doesn’t determine the essence of how they work.

Rules vs. Design Distinction

New 16 May 2024 Asked by moonwaltz7 2 Comments

You've said several times that WOTC doesn't control rules/legality for Commander, but it does seem like you've played with those areas on cards with "this can be your commander" planeswalkers, partner functioning in the command zone, and backgrounds. But you've also indicated that things like card legality and how hybrid mana works belong to the Rules Committee. Why the difference?

Designing cards is different than determining functionality of the format.

Simpsons Homogeneity Analogy

New 06 May 2024 Asked by troisdepiques 47 Comments

"...while the writers of those early seasons had a very diverse background of movies, television, and books that they referenced, the later seasons are written by people who's major cultural touchtone is the Simpsons itself." -In early aviation, the first airplanes were built by people with diverse backgrounds (such as bicycle manufacturing). Should we worry that modern companies like Boeing are filled with too homogeneous a group of aerospace engineers to make great airplanes anymore? :)

A fine point. : )

Partner Cards Complexity

New 04 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 56 Comments

Here are some numbers to illustrate your point about the danger of making more Partner cards. There are currently 58 Commander legal cards with Partner (not including Partner with), which allows for 1653 possible pairs. If you were to make even just a new cycle of 5 Partners, that would add 300 new possible pairs.

I imagine this is why mechanics like Doctors Companion/Friends Forever/Backgrounds/Partner WITH ___ are showing up more, to fill that particular design space without adding to the Partner count specifically?

Well put.

We have people with all sorts of backgrounds. There’s no one path.

Commander Enchantments Return?

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by agreatbigpileofrats 27 Comments

Any plans to bring back backgrounds/commander enchantments? I think they're a really mechanic to build with!

Partner mechanics, especially mix-and-match ones, have huge play balance issues.

Which is more likely, two color backgrounds or two color commanders with "choose a background"?

Neither seems super likely, but the latter is easier to balance.

D&D Set Success Impact

New 25 Sep 2023 Asked by boymeetsanime 33 Comments

Hi Mark! After putting many, MANY hours into Baldur's Gate 3 I've now revisited Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate and think the flavour on the various characters who show up is fantastic and I can't wait to build a few EDH decks using my favourite characters and backgrounds!! Does the success of the game give an increased chance of another D&D set? Regardless, please give high-fives to the relevant people who created the set and Background mechanic!

High fives shall be given. Whether or not we do more D&D sets is due to a giant number of factors, but D&D successes only help.

Art Publishing Request

New 23 Jul 2023 Asked by andalon-historian 62 Comments

I have a request to pass along to the right person: Start publishing the art from the game again! Wizards used to post selected art from the set in a bunch of different aspect ratios to be used as backgrounds; it was only like three cards per set, but then it was only one, now none at all.

I’ll pass the note along.

Commander Draft Mechanics

New 14 May 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 26 Comments

It's hard for me to imagine a commander draft set without partner, backgrounds, or a similar mechanic. But as has been said those are hard to balance. Do you think it would be a good idea to create a mechanic that let's you partner them in draft but not constructed? Similar to cards from conspiracy? Or do you think it is best to just keep inventing new versions of partner?

Partner, and partner variants, aren’t necessarily the only way to do it.

The combinatorics are tricky to balance.

Backgrounds vs Partners

New 13 May 2023 Asked by asseanontv 30 Comments

Hiya Mark!I know someone asked about backgrounds earlier. I was really excited with how they came out to he honest. Do you think backgrounds create a more balanced form of partner? Or does it create more issues?

They cause less issues than partners, but have their own issues.

World Backgrounds

New 09 Apr 2023 Asked by shadowstar91 87 Comments

So for all the Battles could you give a small description or fact for those that don't know what the worlds about? Like Segovia is miniature world, Muraganda is prehistoric world, Vryn is Jace's homeworld. I really want to know more about what's going on with Xerex or Azgol and the rest that have only appeared in Planes before and never in story. And then lesser known worlds like Shandalar or Vryn for the newer players that never heard of them before MOM. Either here or as a future article?

I have a three-part article, starting on Monday, where I go through all thirty-six battles. I explain the history of the world and walk through how we designed the card, including walking through references to the plane.

Backgrounds Power Issue

Having two cards act as a commander creates power level issues.

Universal Backgrounds Idea

New 07 Feb 2023 Asked by gogmagogblog 26 Comments

Hi Mark! Is it possible that we'll ever see a card type similar to Backgrounds that can be used with any legendary creature? I just think it would be really cool to give new life to old legendary creatures / commanders by having cards which could add to their color identity.

Open ended combinatorics are dangerous.

Pending Mythic Heroes and Backgrounds

New 23 Jul 2022 Asked by the-31st-reason 24 Comments

With Baldur's gate, the commander decks introduced a new mythic Background commander (Hero) and a mythic background. Since there were only four decks, White missed out on a mythic Hero, and green missed out on a mythic Background. Is there a chance they would be introduced later, or in a later commander product?

There are no current plans to do that.
