Reskinning Existing Magic Cards

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by genericanonymoususer 3 Comments

Hi! This is sort of a random question about the reskins we've seen with universes beyond cards vs. functional reprints to change the flavor of an in-universe card to another in-universe card (like llanowar elves vs. fyndhorn elves). I could run Paths of the Dead (from LOTR commander) in a standard deck, since it *is* cavern of souls. I could not, however, run fyndhorn elves in place of llanowar elves in one of the formats where llanowar elves is legal but fyndhorn elves isn't. The tradeoff to this is that in commander, I can run one fyndhorn elves and one llanowar elves, since they're not the same card, but I can't run a Paths of the Dead and a Cavern of Souls from another printing (ex. LCI), since they're the same card. Would it be possible to print in-universe cards as reskins instead of functional reprints to change the flavor? For example, say you're designing a faction set with tri-color factions, and you want to use the triome lands with cycling, but you're not on Ikoria/New Capenna, so the names don't really fit. If you did a functional reprint to change the flavor, then players in eternal formats could double the number of triomes they run. Is reskinning the card an option you have at your disposal for this kind of situation?

Reskinning is an option, but a resource we want to be careful with.

Errata for Cavern of Souls

New 30 May 2024 Asked by hydrex1998-blog 18 Comments

Hello mark, I'm looking at urza's cave, and wondering why wasn't cavern of souls corrected to be a cave?

We chose not to errata old cards.

Land Type Updates

New 12 May 2024 Asked by affinityforanime 32 Comments

Would Wizards ever consider doing a "great land type update" errata for older lands? For example make Command Tower a Land - Tower, Cavern of Souls a Land - Cave or Crystal Quarry a Land - Mine.

We consider lots of things, but the bar for such a thing is high.

Batching Subtype Consideration

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by vanhawk 22 Comments

if or when: a batching subtype for effects like cavern of souls (eg.: Canine for wolves, foxes, jackals, werewolves and so on).

If. We can make batches such that a particular card cares about the batch, but its trickier to make a batch that a card making you pick a creature type can care about.

Cave Land Assessment

New 17 Nov 2023 Asked by apphroditus 44 Comments

You’ve gotten a couple asks about making cavern of souls a cave, and have said there were discussions of potentially changing a group of lands to caves. What were some of the other lands you were looking at for possible caveification?

Lands with Cave or Cavern in their name.

Cavern of Souls Query

Why is Cavern of Souls not a cave? :p

We did talk about it, but decided against errata for old cards.

Land Errata Question

New 25 Oct 2023 Asked by violet-returned 29 Comments

Will any lands be getting errata to make them retroactively caves? Gemstone caverns, maybe? Cave of Temptation? Cavern of Souls?

I don’t believe we are currently planning to do that.

Cavern of Souls Use

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by cannonspectacle 29 Comments

If I wanted to use Cavern of Souls to make my Time Lords uncounterable, would I choose "Time", or "Time Lord"?

Time Lord.

New Mana Symbol

New 19 Dec 2022 Asked by uhhuh-waitwhat 27 Comments

If/When: A "rainbow/wubrg" mana symbol for cards like Cavern of Souls, Ancient Ziggurat, Birds of Paradise, etc.?

If. We are wary to add new symbols, so they gave up carry a lot of weight.

Potential for Keyword Lords

New 01 Jul 2020 Asked by kynelan-mdw 38 Comments

With keyword matters creatures from Ikoria(Labyrinth Raptor) and Core 2021(Hooded Blightfang) will we start to see keyword lords? Like deathtouch creatures you control have +1/+1. Or perhaps a Cavern of Souls but for keywords on creatures?

It’s not great design space. Most keywords don’t want you to fill your deck with them. That doesn’t mean we won’t ever make some that play well.

Tribal Cards Strategy

New 01 Jun 2018 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 40 Comments

Almost all tribal cards work best with with token makers or other swarmy strategies. Why do we see so few cards like Cavern of Souls, Steely Resolve, or Contested Cliffs that reward more of a Go Tall tribal deck?

The simplest strategy with tribal themes is “play a lot of the creature” which tends to lean towards a go-wide strategy.

Creature Type Restrictions

New 24 Nov 2017 Asked by maelstromwalker 23 Comments

If I’m playing in a modern PTQ, and I play a cavern of souls, am I allowed to name killbot as a creature type for it? Or does the fact that it’s in silver border only restrict it to games with silver border?

I believe creature types unique to silver border are not legal to name when playing solely black border.

Land Card Trivia

New 03 Jan 2016 Asked by strangebeets 29 Comments

Hi Mark! It was my birthday a couple days ago. Can I get some trivia on one of my four favorite lands: Cavern of Souls, Dryad Arbor, Boseiju, or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth?

I believe if the Rules Manager had to make a Top Ten list of the cards that have caused then the most headaches, Dryad Arbor would make the list. Being both a land and a creature at all times in all zones causes issues. Happy Birthday!

Cavern of Souls Creator

New 14 Aug 2015 Asked by thechosenofnissa-deactivated201 31 Comments

I bought a cavern of souls today, which was according to the sticker on the sleeve was signed by the creator, out of curiosity if I had actually got a true signed card, who created the card?

I designed the card. Whose signature was on it?

Future of Special Mana

New 07 Jun 2014 Asked by zemyla 33 Comments

I enjoy "special mana" like from Hall of the Bandit Lord, Cavern of Souls, and Opal Palace. Could we see more of that in the future?

It’s tricky and causes no ends of headaches for Magic Online, but I’m sure you haven’t seen the last of it.

Evolutionary Game Change

New 23 May 2013 Asked by amaurysouza 21 Comments

I know the "humans don't like change" thing and all, and I have been trying to be pacient about everything going on (from control's death to new slivers, rules changes and so on). But it seems I am not the target audience of mtg anymore, which makes me sad. Last friday I went to an FNM and seeing Voice of Resurgence, Cavern of Souls, Boros Charm and everything just didn't feel right. I ended up not playing. I'm not enjoying the game anymore. Wil there ever be a change that older players like?

I get letters all the time from people who left the game and have recently come back about how happy they are with all the changes Magic has gone through in their absence. I think sometimes people get so close to every little change that it’s hard to step back and see how far the game has come. I also get a lot of letters from players who apologize for sending me mean letters about some change they couldn’t stand only to find out that in the long run they actually liked the change. I’m not saying every player will love every change, but I do believe that we as a whole are constantly improving the game and making it better.

Non-Basic Land Targeting Issue

New 21 Dec 2012 Asked by odysseyblockfan 8 Comments

Why not just put "target non-basic land" on cards like slaughter games, non-basic has been used for years on wasteland and ghost quarter, so if you put it on slaughter games it can now be a awnser for all kinds of things like cavern of souls or valakut

Do you mean any card whatsoever but a basic land or a land but only one that’s non-basic? See the ambiguity?

Hosers Design Philosophy

New 06 Jul 2012 Asked by the0uroboros-blog-blog 1 Comments

I'm curious how cards like Grafdiggers Cage and Cavern of Souls can exist as super hosers yet cards like Gloom or Perish will never be reprinted. Shouldn't all types of hosers exist instead of the current double standard?

We want hosers to be answers to problems not cards that keep certain strategies from being playable. For example, Perish isn’t a card to sideboard in against a green metagame. It’s a card whose existence tends to keep green from being played.  In general, colors are too broad of a category to have their color hosers be too strong. It took us many years to learn this lesson.

Cavern of Souls Design

New 29 May 2012 Asked by doopboopdoop 0 Comments

Was there any thought of making Cavern of Souls legendary? With all the issues involving it now do you wish you had?

We try not to make lands legendary because we don’t like the gameplay. The legendary supertype works especially bad with lands. We do it very infrequently and only for strong flavor reasons.

Cavern of Souls Design

New 25 May 2012 Asked by philosophile42 1 Comments

How could you have designed cavern of souls, to be as equally awesome as it is without the current ruling problems?

If we could do things over again, the card would have different templating (aka card wording).
