Is Ambiguity an Acorn Card?

Would Ambiguity have been acorn or not?

It works in the rules, it’s just purposefully confusing.

Term Change for 'Counter'

Just admit that you don't want to change the word "counter" because that would break Ambiguity :P

Ambiguity Deck Fun

New 02 Sep 2019 Asked by su92 20 Comments

"I made an Ambiguity deck. It was pretty fun." You mean as fun as recurrent counterspells can be, right?

The deck combined a counterspell component with a lot of cards with counters.

Ambiguity's Gameplay

"Un-cards have to play well and not just be a funny joke the first time you read it." Do you consider Ambiguity to be a mistake?

I made an Ambiguity deck. It was pretty fun.

Ambiguity in Blackborder

New 01 Sep 2019 Asked by itsgadang 37 Comments

Are there specific rules, which prevent Ambiguity from working in Blackboarder?

No. Some silver border cards are built around effects that while doable are something we don’t want to do in black border. For example, we try not to make cards that are designed to confuse players.

Ambiguity Card Mechanics

New 01 Sep 2019 Asked by akumeoyart 109 Comments

What does Ambiguity do?

Ambiguity 2UUEnchantmentWhenever a player plays a spell that counters a spell that has been played or a player plays a spell that comes into play with counters, that player may counter the next spell played or put an additional counter on a permanent that has already been played, but not countered.

Silver Border Mechanic

New 01 Sep 2019 Asked by thesoundofdrumming-blog-blog 43 Comments

Would silver border ever be able to make a card that cares about both counters (as in +1/+1) and counters (as in counter target spell)?

We did. It’s called Ambiguity.

Correcting DFC Terms

New 30 Aug 2019 Asked by jonpaulcardenas 33 Comments

Would you correct a new player that called DFC flip cards? Some one in R & D? How important is it to make it clear the two are two different things?

Words matter, so I correct anyone who uses Magic terms incorrectly. Note I’m not against vernacular slang, but not when it causes confusion due to ambiguity which happens when a term has another meaning in Magic.

Mana Cost Pronunciation

New 28 Aug 2019 Asked by theuninvitedghost 57 Comments

"We say it as it is literally written in the mana cost. 2U would be “two, blue”. 1UU would be “one, blue, blue”." I guess you've become accustomed to it, but "two, blue" sounds like a blue two times to me.

That’s “blue, blue”. Since mana costs have numbers, you can’t use numbers to say how many of a colored mana you have without causing ambiguity.

Instant Sorcery Concept

New 27 Mar 2019 Asked by mrpopogod 36 Comments

"Instant Sorcery - And no, I don’t expect that to happen anytime soon." - To me this feels similar to how when Planeswalker came out you guys didn't want to do the massive amount of errata and came up with the damage redirect rule. Then you went and did the errata anyway. My gut tells me there are far fewer cases of ambiguity in a blanket translation of older cards caring about instants and/or sorceries than with direct damage cards, so this seems like a bullet you guys could bite.

There would be hundreds of cards that would have text that works within the rules as written yet wouldn’t do what the card actually does. Note: there’s a fine argument that the planeswalker redirection change should have left cards as is and just have cards moving forward hit planeswalkers.

Slivers Return Status

Will slivers make a return soon?

Soon is a relative term, but let’s embrace the ambiguity and say yes.

Art-Driven Card Design

New 02 Jan 2019 Asked by hakuplaneswalker 33 Comments

Was there any card that was designed to suit a particular art or art style?

There are numerous Un-cards with art choices made to enhance the overall card. Ambiguity (from Unhinged), for example, has a picture that can be turned upside down and be a different picture.

Ambiguity Consistency

If Matt’s doing his job, it should remain equally difficult to parse. : )

Ambiguity in Art

New 24 Jun 2017 Asked by paulapolos 48 Comments

Explaining "Ambiguity" should be part of the level one judge test.

Are you aware that you can turn Ambiguity upside down and get a different picture? The artist drew it so each side up was a different picture.

Subtype Usage Limits

New 26 Mar 2017 Asked by corvus-abyssus 28 Comments

The "Instant - Goblin" question was asking if the same word could be used as a subtype of two different card types, with no mechanical overlap. It's basically playing in a space similar to the ambiguity of the word "counter". To answer that, no, the word cannot, because the rules cannot distinguish the difference.

Correct, the rules do not allow the same word to be multiple sub types.

Un-Card Wordplay

New 14 Feb 2017 Asked by sizzlingcherryblossomcupcak-blog 21 Comments

Are there any un-cards that play with different meanings of the words in mechanics, like double strike referring to two unions on strike? If not I'd like to request one.

Ambiguity, from Unhinged, makes fun of both “play” and “counter” having two meanings.

Profilterate Origin

Not consciously but I did design both.

Color Capabilities

New 09 Dec 2016 Asked by greatdinn 33 Comments

On the 6th, someone asked: "If colors should have things they can't do, why are you going down on protection and landwalk?" You opened your response with "Colors *shouldn’t* have things they can’t do." So does that mean you're attempting to find ways within color that let Red deal with Non-Creature Enchantments and Black deal with Non-Creature Artifacts?

Colors shouldn’t have thing X. Thing X is a thing they shouldn’t have. What is Thing X? Things that the colors is not supposed to do by philosophical and mechanical definition.Ah, the ambiguity of language.

Ambiguity of Destroy

New 22 Oct 2016 Asked by jeshuo-blog 43 Comments

Wouldn't "Destroy Target Player" increase ambiguity in the same way as counter (spell) and counter(+1/+1)? Destroy currently means "put into the graveyard". Why disrupt that and give it two possible meanings? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

The important thing is will players correctly identify what the text means. I am confident that the vast majority of players would get “Destroy target player” correct.
