If mana burn cant be brought back would a red enchantment be possible to have its effect or would it more be a black & white tax effect.

It would be a red enchantment.

Keywords Across Planes

New 17 Jan 2020 Asked by public-domain-books 41 Comments

Would you say that we will never see keywords made after NWO appear on planes that they didn’t already exist? Is this because there has been a strong push to make keywords and ability words have a strong identity with a specific faction? I am curious what the chances are of seeing an ability from Ravnica show up on a world that isn’t Ravnica.

We’ve brought back mechanics on worlds different than the one they first appeared. For example, proliferate was on Ravnica last year (in War of the Spark), but originated on Mirrodin (in Scars of Mirridin).

Return Set Focus

New 11 Jan 2020 Asked by morrise1989 65 Comments

So I don't intend this to be particularly negative or critical, but for me, personally, from a gameplay perspective, Theros Beyond Death doesn't bring back any of the things I enjoyed about Theros. My question is: Does this mean that the things that were brought back are what the team sees as the most important aspects of Theros and we'll see more of the same if there's another return, or do I still have a chance to see things like Bestow cards, or Heroic as a draft archetype again?

A return could focus on different elements. It’s also possible Heroic shows up on a different world. (Bestow is trickier to show up elsewhere.) it depends on reception and how long before a return. The longer the return, the more likely it hits similar notes.

Magic Invitational Cards

New 27 Dec 2019 Asked by midwestmtgjudge 30 Comments

Do you think we will ever get the Magic Invitational back? Or, at least, the return of the pro-player-creates cards? I think that it was a huge boon to the player community to see these cards made - “If you get REALLY good, someday, you could even make your own wacky card and have it see print.”

We’ve brought back the player card for the world champion, but it’s no longer designed by the player. We do work with them to find a card that matches their play style and their image appears on the card.

White's Card Advantage

New 30 Nov 2019 Asked by petruscaex 37 Comments

Are there plans for cards and/or abilities like Faith's Reward and Brought Back to be printed more frequently? They're a good bet to give card advantage inside White's part of the Color Pie.

It’s in White’s pie, so I assume we’ll do more of it.

Mana Burn's Color

What color(s) would a card be that brought back mana burn?

Red.

Protection Mechanic Discussion

New 21 Oct 2019 Asked by theothin 32 Comments

You've mentioned that protection was brought back due to Play Design needs. Protection is pretty complex and powerful - do you know if there was any consideration to making a new mechanic to fill that color-hosing space instead?

We looked, but couldn’t find something we were happy with.

Protection's Return

New 22 Sep 2019 Asked by heshotmeagain 34 Comments

Why was protection brought back? It even seemed like you were experimenting with alternatives like hexproof from black. Now I noticed hexproof isn't in throne of eldraine at all. Why?

It was brought back for a combination of play design and nostalgia reasons. I was one of the people involved in getting rid of it. It’s one of the things in working on a group creation. You don’t control all the facets.

Mimic Vat Trivia

New 29 Aug 2019 Asked by pfayze 38 Comments

Hey Mark, it’s my birthday! Do you have any trivia on Mimic Vat, or any other unheard information about anything you’d like to share? Thank you!

When we brought back imprint in Scars of Mirrodin, the goal was to try an innovate with it. When we made Mimic Vat, we were trying to make a creature copying artifact, but one that played differently. We did that two ways. One, it could only copy a creature temporarily, and two, it could only copy the last creature to have died. Happy Birthday!

Snow Frame Discussion

When Snow was brought back, was a unique Snow frame ever discussed? I think that would make sense.

I think it was talked about.

High fives to everyone who brought back Rhinos back to viable, even as tokens :)

High fives to be delivered.

Chandra's Spitfire Trivia

New 27 Jul 2019 Asked by thecurioustale 25 Comments

Hi Mark! It's my birthday at last--Saturday birthday, no less! I was wondering if I could get some trivia on Chandra's Spitfire? It was my first favorite card in Magic, and I'm so happy to see it returning in Core 2020!

My best guess is the card was originally designed to help enable a direct damage based deck and got brought back for Core 2020 because it fit both the Chandra theme and the elemental theme. Happy Birthday!

Mechanics Return Clarified

For the inquiring minds question. Does Modern Horizons's single shot of some mechanics count as being brought back?

Not for the question.

Eternalize vs Embalm

New 26 Mar 2019 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 38 Comments

I would guess though that Eternalize was not liked because it was a rehash of Embalm. Kind of like how Megamorph was hated. It was too similar to an old mechanic. If you had brought back embalm I think it would have been better received than just tweaking a mechanic.

The frustrating part is we weren’t trying to pass either of those two mechanics off as new mechanics. We were just trying to tweak them slightly to fit the story.

Old Frames Legibility Issues

New 22 Mar 2019 Asked by manacymbal 57 Comments

Hey mark! Still on you for an answer to how it can be possible that the old frames can’t be brought back for promotional cards or indeed in a more major way. I can’t believe that the amazing people at wotc can’t make this happen and in addition the community is making such beautiful mock ups of modern framed staples with old frame and text. I just love the old frames and I welcome Modern horizons increasing the number of old frame cards playable in modern! Thanks!

It’s not just a logistics issue. We also don’t want to return to the old frames. They have huge legibility issues.

Exile Zone Functions

New 02 Mar 2019 Asked by okniwy 37 Comments

While it's likely folded together this way to save design space, do you feel that there is a failing in flavor that the exile zone is used interchangeably as "this is gone forever", "this is gone until I leave" (o-ring effects), and "this is put aside until I use it" (red impulse draw and recent theft effects)?

I don’t mind it being a holding zone for things that are purposefully brought back by the card that exiled it. I don’t see the value of having a separate hiatus zone.

Guild Mechanics Reuse

New 15 Feb 2019 Asked by polnareffassist 39 Comments

When design floats old mechanics to bring back in new sets, are guild mechanics and the like weighted differently, to keep them somewhat unique?

No, guild mechanics can be brought back like any mechanic, and it doesn’t have to keep its guild colors.

Venser's Unlikely Return

New 08 Feb 2019 Asked by theuninvitedghost 87 Comments

What are the chances that Venser will be brought back to life, transmuted into a Beeble on Rabiah, and printed in a standard set with a Storm ability?

Low.

Simic Mechanic Ideas

New 19 Dec 2018 Asked by matahxri 95 Comments

can simic stop getting uninspired +1/+1 counter mechanics pls

We brought back Monstrosity, a much beloved Theros mechanic for Simic. We tweaked it (and changed it’s name) to add extra synergy with the guild.

Mana Burn Enchantment

New 22 Nov 2018 Asked by burntsquirrelman-deactivated201 44 Comments

Could mana burn be brought back in the form of a legendary enchantment?

We could make an enchantment that granted the ability. I’m not sure why it needs to be legendary.
