Silver Bordered Cards Legalization

New 02 May 2024 Asked by ragnar-viking 29 Comments

Wondering, how likely is it that some Silver bordered cards that work within the rules of magic (for example Blast from the Past) from pre-unfinity un-sets become errata'd to be tournament/legacy/normal play legal? I understand that's probably not the highest priority but curious what's the biggest obstacle to that.

It’s just crossing a line we haven’t crossed yet.

Eternal Legal Card Opinion

Blast From The Past is 100% functional and reasonably balanced card that could definitely be eternal legal in my book.

True.

Doctors Color Variation

New 27 Oct 2023 Asked by americanlantern 45 Comments

I would like to voice some small frustration that none of The Doctors are green/white meaning I cannot use all the companions as possible alternate commanders with Blast From the Past. In fact I think it leaves all the Blue companions in a slightly awkward spot. I wish there had been more color variation with the numbered Doctors. They didn't all need Blue.

The key to Universes Beyond is to stay true to the characters and stories, not necessarily maximize every play combination. When we make the story, we build around the color pie, but outside properties don’t, which means we capture as accurately as we can the choices the property made.

Acceptability of Complex Cards

New 14 Dec 2021 Asked by obazervazi 32 Comments

Are Blast from the Past and Who//What//When//Where//Why acceptable in black border?

They both work within the rules, so I assume they’d be eternal if printed in Unfinity.

Uncards and Playtest cards

New 03 Jul 2021 Asked by benalishhero 38 Comments

My favorite uncards are the cards that do cool things, but still function within the normal rules of Magic or within the realm of things the game could reasonably care about. Like the 5-way split card, Blast From the Past, Yet Another Aether Vortex, the Double cycle, Gifts Given, etc. What I liked about the Mystery Booster playtest cards was that they were almost exclusively those types of uncards. You consider them mistakes yet they are the only recent Magic product that I actually want...

There are numerous playtest cards that don’t even work in the silver-border rules let alone black border rules. And a good number of them that do work don’t lead to fun gameplay. You might not personally enjoy Unsets, but a lot of time is spent making sure the cards work cohesively and lead to fun play patterns for the players who enjoy stretching the boundaries of what Magic allows. I do believe there are playtest cards that do that, but not consistently.

Print Challenges

How much difficulty did you guys have getting Blast From The Past to get printed with the new print guidelines?

It’s much easier to do with a non-changing box product than a randomized booster.

Unsanctioned Foil Cards

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by darkosrox 36 Comments

First of all: Thank you so so so so so much for UnSanctioned! B.O.B Alexander Clamillton and the tokens are my favourite! Secondly i have a question: Will any of the cards in UnSanctioned be foil? And will the reprints of older Un cards look the same in the old mtg design or will they look like current cards? Thank you!

A cycle of the full-art lands is foil, but that’s the only foil cards in the product. All the reprints, save Blast from the Past and Old Fogey, are in new frames, but some have nods to their old frame adjustments.

Cycling and Madness Together

New 30 Sep 2019 Asked by ykurisu 29 Comments

will we ever see cycling and madness in the same set? on that note, where is Amonkhet on the rabiah scale?

Future Sight has a card with both called Ichor Slick and Unhinged has a card called Blast from the Past.

Blast from the Past Odds

Will we ever get a black bordered version of Blast from the Past?

I’ll call it “highly unlikely”.

Black Border Attempt

How hard did you try to get a black bordered Blast from the Past into a Modern Horizons?

A card can’t exist in both black border and silver border (not with the same name).

Silver-Border Reprints

New 03 Mar 2018 Asked by mort459 26 Comments

If you ever do get silver bordered cards in a mostly black border reprint set, would it be cards that mechanically work in black border but are just a little over the top (i.e. Blast from the Past or Who/what/when/where/why)? silver border is fun but i feel like that is a fair compromise.

The main issue is not a play issue but a printing one.

Kitchen Sink Discussions

"Blast from the Past is a “kitchen sink” non-creature. I can’t think of any other." ... Would Akroma's Memorial not count?

Sure.

Kitchen Sink Designs

New 27 Feb 2018 Asked by ghallberg 32 Comments

Can only Creatures have kitchen sink designs? I'm thinking of Blast From the Past as an example of a (the only?) kitchen sink design Instant.

Blast from the Past is a “kitchen sink” non-creature. I can’t think of any other.

Flashback and Buyback Rules

New 07 Nov 2017 Asked by autumnthunder17-blog 25 Comments

So flashback + buyback doesn't work in black border, does it combo in silver border? Does Blast from the Past work the way people expect it does?

Sadly, no. Silver border doesn’t change how mechanics work.

Cube Playability Strategy

New 12 Apr 2016 Asked by magicalrandomness 14 Comments

The way to make any card, silver border or otherwise, cube playable, is to make it powerful enough to draft. Blast from the past and Booster tutor are particularly sweet ones. And while there exists a large varieties of cubes, players tend to build powerful ones, so as funny as toy boat is, I would never include it in my cube.

Do people include Incoming! or Richard Garfield PhD? Those are both very powerful.

Blast from Past

New 22 Jan 2016 Asked by eternalcheechako 38 Comments

Want a blast from the past? The "Skeletons in R&D's Closet" article shows hilariously naive multiverse comments about bah-roken Urza's block cards. The last line is "I'm sure ten years from now a new group of developers will look back at some of the cards we've made in recent years and say, "What were they thinking?!"". But then there is a poll that reminds us when it was written: "Now that you've seen Darksteel, what is your favorite keyworded mechanic from the Mirrodin block?" :)

Check it out: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/latest-developments/skeletons-rd%E2%80%99s-closet-2004-02-20 It would s a fun read. Interestingly, I don’t get quoted.

Un-cards in MTGO Cube

Could certain un-cards that technically work within the normal magic rules (like Blast from the Past) make appearances in the MTGO cube?

Probably not, but not definitely not.

Old Fogey Trivia

New 25 Dec 2014 Asked by vacuumsalesman-blog1 28 Comments

My grandpa was born on Christmas :) any trivia on Old Fogey?

Old Fogey was created by Mark Gottlieb (along with Blast from the Past). Those two cards inspired the “Mix and Match” cards in Future Sight. They are also the only two cards in Unhinged that use the old card frame and the goblin riding the Time Machine can be seen in the art of both. Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Un-card Reprints

New 26 Nov 2014 Asked by schwartzphd-deactivated20200825 17 Comments

Could an Un-card like Blast from the Past or Who/What/When/Where/Why be reprinted in another Un-set or other type of supplemental product?

It being silver-bordered makes it hard to reprint in a non-Un-set. As for reprinting in an Un-set, we do them so infrequently, that I’m not sure we want to waste slots with reprints instead of new content.
