UB Full Sets Ideas

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by clumsynotdrunk 23 Comments

UB Wishlist!
Full sets / commander:Warcraft: such a depth of lore and characters to mechanically build out into magic, enough material to creatively support multiple sets IMO. Such as Horde vs Alliance, Burning Legion’s invasion(s), Light vs Void, General fantasy adventure shenanigans not already covered by dnd, etcNaruto: would result in some oddball designs that I think could be super fun, plus being to tap into the anime market is always nice. Star Wars: it’s Star Wars and it’s amazing. The Last of Us: ticks both the “prestige TV” and “AAA video game” boxes while also melding magic with one of the most emotionally powerful properties in recent memory. Secret Lair:The Simpsons: having cards to pair with your color article about each family member’s color would be the best.Buffy the Vampire Slayer: fun nostalgia vibes and also so I can see the creature type “Slayer.”

Thanks.

TV Show UB Expansion

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by leonemian 43 Comments

If you could make a Universes Beyond of any network TV show, what would it be?

I'll excise genre TV like Buffy and Angel, but I will say, I will immediately preorder any Buffy the Vampire Slayer UB set that is promo'ed.

Examples; Bones, House MD, Cheers, Frasier, Family Matters, can be sitcom, drama, or procedural. If you're inspired, give a drama, a sitcom, and a cop show.

“Roseanne”. : )

Universes Beyond Hypotheticals

New 12 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 45 Comments

If Universes Beyond has existed since 1993, what are some products we might have seen whose time has now passed?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Battlestar Galactica? X-Files?

It’s fun to imagine.

Mono-Green Characters

Are there any mono-green human characters in any "grounded"ish fictional work (Roseanne, Law and Order, etc) or is "magic" a requirement?

TV Show Reworking Insights

New 19 Jan 2022 Asked by hyrosen-blog 29 Comments

Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie was terrible. Reworked into a TV show, it was brilliant. "Let's fix what we did wrong" isn't "let's do this just because".

The reason “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” got made into a television show was because its creator felt the movie messed up his vision. He made it so he could demonstrate what he wanted it to be. That’s a very different example than “let’s remake Heaven’s Gate”.

Handling Increased Workload

New 27 Feb 2021 Asked by mangofisher74 75 Comments

Hi Mark, the magic expansions/universes sound great, and I am in your camp - if you like it play it, if not don’t. My only worry is will it stretch the WOTC talent too thin. Can you guys handle the increased work load and still maintain your own high bar of quality? Btw - ip suggestion, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

R&D gets to hire more people as we get additional products to create.

Green's Pop-Culture Examples

New 18 Aug 2019 Asked by dienekes101 53 Comments

Mark, many of times when watching films or shows, I start thinking what MTG colors they represent. So many times I can easily attribute a character as Red, Blue, White, and/or Black, but Green is toughest for me and I attribute few to it. Does Green require (only?) association with Wisdom, Nature and the Mystical? Could you provide a pop-culture to help me? Thank you sir

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a great green-centric character. She didn’t choose to be the Slayer. For much of the show, she didn’t want to be the Slayer, but she came to embrace it as her destiny.

You are correct on both.

Urban Fantasy Definition

New 11 Aug 2018 Asked by daracaex 63 Comments

"Urban" does mean relating to a city, but "Urban Fantasy" is a specific genre term that refers to elements of fantasy alongside a more modern world closer to our present. Examples include The Dresden Files, Hellboy, and (as you recently referenced) Angel/Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I was unaware of the term. We don’t want Magic set in anything close to a modern world.Kaladesh is probably as technology forward as we’re ever going to be.

Green Philosophy

New 23 Jun 2018 Asked by tonyredgravedmc 55 Comments

Any words of wisdom about understanding Green philosophically outside of fantasy & fiction? White's communal and lawful, Blue's progressive and thoughtful, Black's selfish and goal oriented, Red is passionate and impulsive, those things apply to people irl easily, but it's hard to attribute Green's philosophies to non-specific people's irl without getting literal with hippies, hunters, animal rights activists, etc. Any example of a non-plant/animal themed Green character?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is pretty green. Original comics Wolverine was pretty green. Yoda is both physically and philosophically green.

Spike's Character Analysis

New 21 Dec 2017 Asked by thegreatmill 32 Comments

You say in your old Orzhov article that Spike from Buffy: the Vampire Slayer is white/black. I'm halfway through season 6, (so don't spoil too much) and I basically feel that he's mostly red tipping into white through his love for Buffy. It's true that he's selfish, but his self-interest is purely short-sighted and emotional; he delights in the experiences of the human reality (contrary to Angel/the Master who blackly wanted power and destroy the status quo), fights primarily because it's fun...

Let’s talk again when you’ve watched the whole series.

Redeemed Demons Concept

New 18 Feb 2017 Asked by shadowman2099 40 Comments

We've seen Fallen Angels. What are the chances we'll see Redeemed Demons in Magic?

Fallen Angel is a trope seen all over pop culture. Redeemed Demon is not. We have done a Redeemed Vampire (a nod to Angel - from his own show and “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”).

Inspiring Character Traits

Nature vs. Characters

Yoda is *completely* nature based. He lived on dagobah specifically because of the overwhelming nature and its ties to the force

Green Characters

New 09 Aug 2014 Asked by somehingelse 46 Comments

Can you give an example of some green characters that aren't so directly tied to nature (plants, animals, wilderness, etc)? It seems that out of all the colors, green breaks the least from its elemental associations.

Yoda.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Wolverine.
King Kong.

Trivia on 13

Since it's Friday the 13th (and my sister's birthday), could you give some trivia on blasphemous act?

Into the Maw of Hell’s design name was Into the Hellmouth which was a nod to the television show “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”. The card was designed by creative team and Innistrad design team member Jenna Helland. EDIT: I didn’t have any good trivia so I talked about a different 13 card.
