Returning Dead Characters

New 03 Apr 2024 Asked by darksidepuffin 25 Comments

Hi Mark: Mirri is one of my favorite Magic characters, so I was delighted to see "Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist" printed, even though she's canonically deceased. Is there any chance of Purraj of Urborg making a similar return?

There is a chance. We do make cards of dead characters.

Land Type Cycle

New 12 Feb 2024 Asked by jellobrand 37 Comments

Hello Mark, hope 2024 is treating you well. I have an if / when question for you, will there be a cycle to complete the lands that give other lands a basic land type? Currently we have Urborg, and Yavimaya for black and green, are the other ones colour pie appropriate? Thanks, all the best.

If. All the colors don’t get that ability.

Hard-to-Pronounce Names

New 05 Sep 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 52 Comments

What card name is the hardest for you to pronounce? Urborg Lhurgoyf? Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdicar? Mine personally is Sepulchral Primordial

I learned Lhurgoyf many years ago. The cook, I still can’t say.

Land Effects for Colors

New 27 Aug 2023 Asked by jackal-paws 44 Comments

If or when: An Urborg/Yavimaya land for Red Blue or white?

If. The ability doesn’t really make sense for those colors.

Keyword Ability Limitation

New 23 Aug 2023 Asked by blind42-blog 76 Comments

Would it not be better for creatures like odric (and more recently, urborg scavengers) to just bestow "all abilities" rather than rattling off a list of inconsistent and ever changing abilities? Are there too many interactions that could break the game?

Those cards list abilities because the black border rules can’t handle saying “all abilities” or even “all keyword abilities”.

Color Cycle Possibility

New 09 Jul 2023 Asked by throwawayaccountant14 35 Comments

Hi Mark, I'm a big fan of Simian Spirit Guide and Elvish Spirit Guide. Will cards like this be made for the other colors as well, or will this be a Yavimaya/Urborg where only certain colors get it?

It was never intended to be a cycle.

French Vanilla Matters?

New 10 May 2023 Asked by cascadejack 31 Comments

Would you say that cards like Odric and Urborg Scavengers qualify as French Vanilla Matters??

No, they’re anti-synergistic with vanilla creatures.

Blue Urborg Concept

New 16 Apr 2023 Asked by mrtitanic 59 Comments

Is it possible to have a blue island version of Urborg and Yavimaya?

It’s unlikely.

Cycle Completion

New 03 Jan 2023 Asked by somedaylily 34 Comments

If or when: Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth becoming a full cycle

If. Not all colors do that.

Dominaria Nostalgia Request

New 02 Jan 2023 Asked by aringa90 24 Comments

Hello Mark,Dominaria remastered made me go through memory lane, to the time I started playing magic as a teen (really looking forward to it!).Thinking back of Invasion, I remember a character referenced on multiple cards but that never received a card herself: The Urborg Witch (card references: Addle, exotic curse, dredge, undermine, smoldering tar). Can I request a card for her? :)Thank you

You may.

Land Cycle Expansion

New 28 Dec 2022 Asked by jonas-dietrich 50 Comments

How likely do you consider the cycle with "Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth" and "Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth" to be expanded or maybe even finished?

I’m skeptical as it’s not something all of the colors do.

Future of Urborg/Yavimaya

New 08 May 2022 Asked by dragonkillrr 47 Comments

Hi Mark,Do you think we will see the red, blue and white versions of Urborg/Yavimaya some day or are these two legendary lands one off?

They’re not designed to be a cycle.

Referencing Cards Containing Specific Words

New 19 Feb 2022 Asked by derplingvonderp 26 Comments

Currently to reference all cards that contain a certain word would require to spell out all the possible cards with that name in the rules text. When There's only a handful, it is possible (see Urborg Pantera). That is undoable in paper Magic for the Magus cycle as There's too many. Even printing a token with all magus' names would not be a solution because it'd become obsolete and require an update with every new magus. That said would you be willing to try that in digital/alchemy as a testing ground?

The problem is the list is nonsensical in non-English languages (or whatever language the words are based in).

Influence of D&D's Beholders

New 22 Dec 2021 Asked by deyuil 29 Comments

Were Evil Eye of Orms-By-Gore and Evil Eye of Urborg intended to be based on Dungeons and Dragons' Beholders?

I’d say influenced by. They were clearly not Beholders.

Reprinted Cards Naming

New 27 Nov 2021 Asked by raytyger 49 Comments

Would it be possible to use the same technology as the Godzilla Promos to have magic cards re-flavored to have more plane specific names? If so, would that allow reprints of cards with plane specific names, such as Urborg, outside of their original plane?

I don’t think we want yo use that technology in that way, but it’s something to talk about internally.

Land Mana Abilities Necessity

New 16 Jul 2021 Asked by deatht200 29 Comments

Where are lands with no mana abilities (besides fetches like teramorphic expanse) on the storm scale? (I'll count urborg tomb of yawgmoth as a land with no mana ability)

It’s something we actively choose not to do. Mana production (or land fetching) is key to land’s identity.

Curious about Purraj of Urborg

New 15 Jul 2021 Asked by lebreadbox-blog 32 Comments

So my birthday was missed the last couple of years. Likely because i only ask for homarids. But do you have any trivia on Purraj of Urborg?

Purraj of Urborg was the first creature to only have first strike on attack. It’s an ability we started using a lot more later (sometimes worded as just on your turn).Happy Birthday!

Blue Urborg Land Transformation

New 14 Jun 2021 Asked by wiggin91 49 Comments

"It made sense in green. The other colors are a bit of a stretch." Wouldn't "blue" Urborg make even more sence than the two we have? Considering how blue already does a lot of turning lands into Islands.

Blue is doable. It does do land transformation, although far less than it used to.

Urborg in Black Reasoning

New 13 Jun 2021 Asked by funnyjoemama 34 Comments

Why does Urborg make sense in Black? Also, lands are technically colorless, so...

Corruption is a theme of black.

Color Shift Possibility

New 13 Jun 2021 Asked by meepingmerps 63 Comments

Seeing as green now has a Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth shift, could the other three potentially get them too, or would that be a break?

It made sense in green. The other colors are a bit of a stretch.
