Time Walk

Early Misinterpretations of MTG Rules

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 205 Comments

What is your favorite "misinterpreting of the rules" moments from the early days of Magic?
A few of mine are..
The lands with add (g) to your mana pool were land tutors.
Cards with text "may assign it's combat damage as though it weren't blocked" did full damage to the creature and player.

Here’s a great story from playtesting before the release of Alpha. One of the playtesters goes up to Richard and says, “I have a problem with a card. My opponent plays it and then wins the game. I don’t think that’s fair.”Richard spends all night trying to think of a card that by itself always wins the game. He can’t figure out what it is, so the next day he goes back to the playtester and asks what card they were talking about. They say Time Walk.Richard tracks down a copy and reads it. The playtest versions read “Opponent loses next turn.” Richard had a good laugh and changed the template.

Any day now.

Boomerang's Power Questioned

New 15 Jul 2023 Asked by apo08 34 Comments

Would og Boomerang be too good in standard, given that it can be a time walk on turn2?

Not a play designer, but bouncing a land on turn two is not sone thing we do in modern design.

Turn Skipping Balancing

New 05 Mar 2023 Asked by j-waffles 60 Comments

Time walk was originally a card that said “target player skips their next turn”. With the new popularity of multiplayer, that actually is very different from “take an extra turn”. Could we ever see a card that says “target player skips their next turn”? It would have to be balanced like an extra turn spell for 1v1, but in commander it would be a very interesting card for politics

The problem is it would have to be costed for 1 on 1, making it way overcosted for multiplayer.

Snow Supertype Origin

New 18 Dec 2022 Asked by werewolfcommanderplayer 42 Comments

If you could Time Walk back to Ice Age block and prevent the Snow supertype from seeing print, would you?

That’s not where the supertype started. (Ice Age had snow-covered basic lands, but it didn’t use a supertype.) It was started in Coldsnap design and I *was* there.

Skipping Turns Concept

New 09 Dec 2022 Asked by melissanoma 49 Comments

Supposedly during Alpha development, Time Walk said "target player loses next turn", but it was changed to "target player takes an extra turn" because people thought it meant "loses *the game* next turn". Has R&D in the decades since ever considered making a blue extra turn spell that makes someone skip a turn? In normal two player game it's functionally the same, but the difference would especially be relevant in today's commander-focused culture..

The issue is we have to cost it like an extra turn as that’s how it functions in two-player. I’m not sure it would be worth running in multiplayer at that cost.

Future Time Walk Effects

New 20 Jun 2021 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 87 Comments

I wanted to ask if future Time Walk effects could read "target player skips their next turn" instead of "take an extra turn". Itb would be the same for 1v1 formats. Current template is too strong in multiplayer. Commander has so many of these effects already, we don't want more!

That’s a pretty bold ask. How do others feel about spells that take an extra turn in multiplayer?

Powerful Effect Limitations

New 20 Jun 2021 Asked by corillion 36 Comments

Hi MaRo, thanks for all your hard work making Magic. Both Control Magic and Time Walk effects are massively powerful, with Time Walks getting banned even at 7 mana. Is it possible that these effects should get the "Vindicate treatment" of being only doable with two colours?

A second color isn’t the safety valve you think it is. : )

Only a handful.

Trivia on Extra Turns

New 09 Aug 2020 Asked by littleorlock 167 Comments

Hey Mark, I guess my birthday trivia got buried, but my birthday was August 6th, and I was wondering if you had any trivia on extra turns in Magic?

Here’s one of my favorite original playtesting stories of Magic. One of the playtesters goes up to Richard and said that he got the most powerful card in the whole playtest. He casts it and then automatically wins at the start of his opponent’s turn. Richard wracks his brain for what card he’s talking about because he knows he didn’t make a “you win” card. So he asks to see it. The player shows him Time Walk which originally read “Opponent loses next turn.” Richard smiles and changes the template to “You get an extra turn.”Happy Belated Birthday!

Rarity of 'Time Walk' Cards

New 08 Mar 2020 Asked by bunsenburn 85 Comments

Why are "Time Walk" (take additional turn) cards not printed more often? Are they too powerful? Are they unfun?

It’s an effect you have to be careful with. We do make new ones, just not super often.

No.

Leadership Vacuum Query

New 10 Aug 2019 Asked by phyrexiathings 152 Comments

Just because leadership vacuum is color pie compliant, doesn’t mean it should be printed. Counterspell is perfectly within pie, and yet still excluded from modern. Similarly, ,time walk and ancestral recall are both well within the color pie.

Okay, Commander players, is Leadership Vacuum too strong?

Seedtime Discussion

New 24 Aug 2018 Asked by changethecomic 50 Comments

You said a while ago that Seedtime is a break. What weakness of green does it undercut? The weakness of not being able to get extra turns?

Early Magic did this things where colors occasionally did something their opponent normally did (but they didn’t) when fighting against it. We don’t do that anymore. Every color has its own strategy for winning. It has the tools of the things it does and doesn’t get the tools of the things it doesn’t. Adding extra turns to green fundamentally changes how it’s creature strategy works. That’s why it can’t just randomly get a Time Walk effect.

Red Time Walk Effect

Maybe if it has a rider like Final Fortune.

Typo's Context

I am unable to navigate twitter, what was the Tim Walk mistype in response to?

Today’s Head-to-Head poll was about the blue color pie between Time Walk and card drawing. I mistyped Time Walk as Tim Walk.
