Boomerang Card Query

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by jjarnone-blog 40 Comments

Hello Mr. Rosewater! Today I was working on a project and noticed that Boomerang hasn't had a printing since 10th edition which was 16 years ago. It seems odd that the simplest version of this effect has gone so long without a printing. Is that because unconditional bounce at such a low rate is something you want to avoid now, or is there another reason?

It’s because it lets you bounce land at two mana, and we don’t want to let players do that.

Boomerang's Power Questioned

Would og Boomerang be too good in standard, given that it can be a time walk on turn2?

Not a play designer, but bouncing a land on turn two is not sone thing we do in modern design.

Stack Interaction Expansion

New 17 Jan 2023 Asked by person-of-note 40 Comments

Are you planning on giving other (non-blue) colours more stack interaction? It seems kinda unfair that blue is the only colour that consistently interacts with spells while also being able to interact with any permanent type (boomerang and the like)

Red has spell copying and redirection. White dips its toe into counterspells with taxing and delaying. White also can grant protection and green hexproof to stop spells that target creatures. Black has discard which isn’t technically stack interaction, but lets players interact with a card before it’s on the battlefield.

Potential Land-Target Cards

Would a card like Boomerang (specifically one that can target lands) be a reasonable thing to print in a current standard-legal set?

It’s not something we do anymore, so it’s unlikely.

Return of Costlier Boomerang

Will we ever see a 3 or 4 mana Boomerang a, Mana Short or Twiddle again or is Blue just no longer able to interact with land?

We do it very infrequently.

Origin of 'Bounce'

Could 'bounce' have come from Boomerang?

As Boomerangs don’t bounce, I’m not sure how.

Minotaur Representation

New 13 Jun 2016 Asked by sukusuku-hakutaku 47 Comments

The new art for Carbonize has a minotaur being killed gruesomely. In addition, they are the victim in various other cards, including, but not limited to, Anchor to the Aether, Razor Boomerang, Ghostly Prison, Serra Bestiary, Smite, Backslide, Fleeting Distraction, Void Snare, Dark Betrayal, Hand to Hand, and Lightning Blast. Whenever it's a minotaur, it almost feels like it goes further than normal. Minotaurs themselves are an infrequent creature type. Is there a reason to the disparity?

Minotaurs just take abuse well. : )

Card Purpose Defense

"Every card has a purpose although not necessarily for every player." i have bad news, maro, cards like moonlace, razor boomerang, and mudhole have one purpose: to fill in for better cards in your deck. or to become inside jokes in our game group.

And yet when I picked on Mudhole as being a really bad card (talking about some of the worst cards I’d designed power wise), I had numerous Question Marks explain how they used it in decks. Our Magic Online data shows that every and I mean every card gets played.
