Nonbasic Hate Balance

New 19 May 2024 Asked by j-waffles 28 Comments

Re: Mass nonbasic hate in standard and pioneer pretty please with a cherry on topI have read the threads from my previous questions, and I now understand why most of the extreme nonbasic hate cards, stuff like blood moon, back to basics, or ruination, can feel oppressive against decks with 2 or even 1 color, which is obviously not the goal of such cards. I do want to ask now, as question of curiosity more than a specific request: what kinds of things make hate cards go too far? Whether it be blood moon or rest in peace or engineered plague; at what point does a hate piece cause too much collateral damage (like blood moon), or at what point is the punishment so severe that it can fully lock some decks out of the game (like Rest in Peace). Where is the sweet spot, how do you know you’ve found it, and what kinds of knobs do you turn to help get there? I know that’s way more than one question and might be better suited as an article, but I’d still be fascinated to hear about it.

It’s just yet another reason why play balance is so difficult. Not enough and it’s not effective. Too much and it has impacts you don’t want. Mostly it’s a lot of trial and error in playtesting, and then some finger crossing.

Philosophy on Fulfilling Life

New 03 May 2024 Asked by lizardwizard100 51 Comments

Hey Mark, I hope you’re doing OK. May your father rest in peace. I have a question regarding life. For most of my life, I have believed that the key to living a fulfilling life is to do what makes you feel happy. And for a long time, Magic has been that key for me. However, as I get older, I am beginning to feel less fulfilled by the sheer pursuit of happiness, as if something else is missing. (Not to say that I’m enjoying Magic any less… I’m a player for life!) My question is… what do you believe makes for a fulfilling life?

I think besides being happy, having a sense of purpose is important. Here’s a thought exercise (that I mentioned doing when my Dad died) that I call the It’s a Wonderful Life reflection. What would the world be like if you were never born? What things did you influence? And this includes your impact on other people. Part of having a sense of purpose is doing something that positively affects others in a way that makes your life have meaning.

Personal Secret Lair

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 96 Comments

Hi Mark. If you had to have a Secret Lair to dedicate your passing (in the same way as Sheldon Menery, may he rest in peace), what cards would be a part of it?

Maro (as it’s named after me)Look at Me, I’m the DCI (as I did all the elements of the card - mechanic, name, art & flavor text)Doubling Season (as it’s my favorite design of mine) One of the Karns (as it’s the character I co-created that’s lasted the longest)I’d have to think more on the rest.

Retro Frame Feedback

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by eagle193 23 Comments

Hi Mark, a lot of people have been asking for more retro frames, but I am one of the people you've mentioned that dislikes the retro frame very much. And I am really sad that the amazing new Rest in Peace art was only made in retro frame.

I think only retro frame isn’t something we plan to do often. It will mostly be an occasional booster fun option.

Memories of Sheldon Menery

New 09 Sep 2023 Asked by jarethbulge 199 Comments

Hey Mark, did you know Sheldon Menery personally? Do you have any anecdotes or memories that you can share with us?

I’ve known Sheldon for twenty-five years. During that time, he’s worn many hats, accomplishing an amazing number of things for one man. The story I’ll share is when he came to work at Wizards. It was on his bucket list, so he arranged to come work for us for three months. This was a bit before the pandemic. (He worked on the Strixhaven Commander decks to give some sense of time.)One of my goals when I learned Sheldon was coming to Wizards was to take some time talking with him about the design ramifications of certain Commander decisions. We have to design cards for Commander, so I wanted to help him see how choices the RC makes impact how we design cards.Sheldon always took our talks very seriously, and was eager to learn as much as he could. Those one-on-one talks were probably the most concentrated time I ever had with him, and I remember them fondly. Over the years, he and I would argue a lot, but they were always constructive arguments where each of us was working hard to understand the other’s point of view and trying to move towards a constructive outcome. It’s so great seeing all the outpouring of emotion today. Sheldon touched many lives, and forever changed the game of Magic for the better. He deserves all the kind words being shared. Rest in Peace, Sheldon. You made a huge impact on the game, the community, and the world.

Resource Systems Complexity

New 20 May 2023 Asked by crazedporcupine 56 Comments

Having read your answer to a question about removing mana screw, this is my response to you. Being a big fan of both MtG and riot games' Legends of Runeterra, and having played Mojang's Scroll (may it rest in peace) I've found that resource generation and designing around the cost of creating that resource can be interesting. I find that LoR's system, by also using a region system similar to the color pie, but maxing out with 2 regions means it's more about resource management of cards in hand, and tools to use to advance the game plan of reducing your opponent's life to 0, and Scrolls was unique in that you had to give up scrolls to add to your mana cap to generate a resource, so it was interesting design. Overall, I've found that in games that use a universal mana system in which everyone gets an additional mana to spend each turn, it becomes a challenge of "how do we maintain a level of variance that ensures the game doesn't get stale?" I think that magic as it is designed now could never be changed to prevent mana issues. The game was always designed around the variance that lands provide. Games like hearthstone and LoR went with deck building restrictions and other systems to ensure enough variance is maintained. If a game is designed to provide mana to each player each turn, other design choices must be made to ensure variance is maintained. I personally think each system has its pros and cons, and each game I've played has done well to design around the pros and minimize the cons.

I think I forgot to make an important point in my answer. I was talking about making a trading card game that was designed to appeal to both enfranchised and non-enfranchised gamers. If you’re aiming at a more enfranchised gamer, like yourself, you do have more options open to you because that type of gamer is much more comfortable handling complex decision trees and tension. That style of gameplay though can drive away less enfranchised gamers. One of the big reasons players exit a game early on is being overwhelmed by it. They get too caught up in the choices they’re asked to make to enjoy the fun of the game. This gets into what I call lenticular design, where you create your game in such a way that the more complex decisions are hidden to the less experienced player. The mana system does that really well. I hope this clarification helps.

It’s so hard to pick one. I was a huge fan of the show. Rest in peace, Kevin Conroy. You were a great Batman!

I’m sure you’ve heard but the great Kevin Conroy, who was the voice of Batman in so many forms of media. Would you tell us what you would consider Batman’s color combination would be and why? May he Rest In Peace.

Batman is white and blue with a black persona.

Encounter with Betty White

New 01 Jan 2022 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 72 Comments

I just heard the news about Betty White, may she rest in peace. Did you ever meet her during your career in writing?

I did. In my runner days I worked at Witt/Thomas/Harris. I personally worked on “Empty Nest”, but “Golden Girls” also shot there and I interacted with Betty White a few times.

Monocolor Effects Combination

New 24 Dec 2021 Asked by ironchefravnica 58 Comments

The Entomb/Reanimate with Entwine thing got me thinking, why would the Entwine cost need to be green? I'd have thought it was ok as a mono black card. The catch with black being that the card you tutor for does go to the graveyard first, so the Reanimate half still gets blocked by static graveyard hate. Grafdigger's Cage/Rest In Peace/Leyline of the Void and so on.

We need to be careful doing two monocolor effects on the same card where the combination isn’t in color.

Booster Packs with Oversized Cards

New 24 Aug 2021 Asked by righteousforest 35 Comments

The Transformers TCG (rest in peace) had extra-large booster packs to accommodate oversized cards, showing that including regular-sized and oversized cards in the same booster pack is possible! Do you think this technology makes a booster-based Planechase or Archenemy product more likely?

It existing can only help its chances.

Ashiok Color Pie

New 23 Oct 2019 Asked by ricardolongo 20 Comments

Isn't Ashiok, Dream Render a pretty egregious color pie violation? I didn't think monoblue (which is what blue hybrid basicaly is) could have access to Rest in Peace effects.

No, it can. Blue is number one with library interaction.

Simic Trolls Regeneration

New 08 Jan 2019 Asked by royinversezx 50 Comments

I tought simic breeds were supossed to improve the original, trolls losing their regenerative powers is a SERIOUS downgrade, i dont mind if thrun was the last one, let them rest in peace, unless you plan on making new ones on suplemental sets where they can be themselves.

Regeneration is gone, so we have two choices - trolls without regeneration or no trolls. We chose the former.

Hiya! It was my birthday a bunch of days ago. Can I have some trivia on my archnemesis, Rest in Peace? I have to know my enemy to defeat him.

I believe Rest In Peace was made as a safety valve for Golgari in case it got out of control. Happy Birthday!

Purple in Magic

Mark, Prince died. Can we please add Purple as the (actual) 6th color of Magic. Thanks!

When we made a sixth color (for a small part of design) in Planar Chaos it was purple. Rest in Peace, Prince.

Chris Rush Tribute

New 20 Feb 2016 Asked by helicalscorn 34 Comments

Thank you for your podcast on Chris Rush. It was hard not to get emotional along with you while listening to it. I've been playing since Revised, so I've had the opportunity to play with most of the cards he has drawn. I didn't know he was responsible for the mana symbols. My favorite art of his is Blood of the Martyr. Rest in Peace.

One of my goals with the podcast was to make players understand the many ways he impacted the game. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Treasure Cruise Trivia

New 16 May 2015 Asked by tomorsomthing 40 Comments

Today is my birthday, and birthday questions seem popular here, so I was wondering if I could get some trivia on my favorite card that's come out in years, Treasure Cruise (rest in peace)

We seem to adore putting cost reduction mechanics on cards which match old broken cards with the idea that there is the hope of replicating the old card if the conditions are right. Luckily, it’s never burned us. : ) Happy Birthday!

Why Dredge is OP

New 27 Apr 2015 Asked by inchzer0-deactivated20170110 49 Comments

I'm sorry, sir, but I don't understand WHY it's overpowered. Like, Storm is really easy to trigger, using Dark Ritual and such, Infect leads to super blow-outs, but Dredge just fills the yard. Rest in Peace and similar shut it down. WHY is it OP?

Because it circumvents the mana system which is the biggest safety net in the game
