Understanding of 'Threaten' Effects

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 16 Comments

Blues mind control power suite mist be a total anathema to Red core beliefs of listening to that inner voice(all of a sudden its that Blue mage ordering you about) which always made Threaten effects odd to me as part of its color pie; those would seem more in line with Black mind control (since Nlack would threaten, conjole and blackmail but thats a different topic all together). What was the impetus to put Threaten effects in Red was it part of the old I can use my enemys effects against them(i.e. Red Elemental Blast) or purely a playbalence thing of as a way to deal with big creatures?

Threaten is merely red using its magic to make others as impulsive as itself. Threaten is less it gaining control of their mind and more putting implusive thoughts in their head that get them to act a certain way.

Color Pie Adjustments

New 11 Apr 2023 Asked by theuninvitedghost 41 Comments

What color gets Red Elemental Blast now?

“Counter target blue spell” is a blue effect.“Destroy target permanent” is white/black or black/green, so I assume either could do “destroy target red permanent”. That means it would be white/blue/black or black/green/blue.

Wandering Empress Trivia

New 18 Mar 2022 Asked by coralmoonkingdom 92 Comments

Today is my 50th birthday. Can you give me some trivia about the Wandering Empress? If not trivia about a really old card, please

Red Elemental Blast was originally misprinted as an instant rather than a interrupt. Then it got errataed to an interrupt. Then after Sixth Edition rules removed interrupt, it got errataed back to an instant, meaning it’s first printing was actually correct.Happy Birthday!

Red's Counterspell Abilities

New 13 Oct 2021 Asked by annorax 47 Comments

Can Red get an unconditional counterspell that doesn't replace what it counters (ala Chaos Warp)? Or is Red Elemental Blast now considered a break?

Red Elemental Blast was considered a break when I started at Wizards in 1995.

Color pie aside, WOULD a Red Elemental Blast get instant banned in Standard?

Yes.

About Enemy Color Hate Cards

New 22 May 2021 Asked by estebatto 32 Comments

are enemy color hate cards not something we're likely to see anymore? talking about cards like Pyroblast, red elemental blast, Deathgrip, Lifeforce, gloom and so on.

We still make enemy color hate cards from time to time. They’re not as powerful as the ones in early Magic and they all have to be effects that are in color.

Disliked Color-Pie Break

Is there any color-pie break you dislike the most? One that haunts your dreams?

For today, I’ll say Blue Elemental Blast and Red Elemental Blast.

Red Elemental Blast

RE: Red Elemental Blast. Can you elaborate a little more the details of which part of it is a break and why... we're having an argument in my MTG Forum. Thank You!

Red can neither counter spells nor destroy blue enchantments. (Also, technically it doesn’t destroy creatures, but deals damage to them.)

Biggest Color Pie Break

What, in your opinion, is the most extreme color pie break that has been printed?

There’s a bunch. Today, I’ll say Red Elemental Blast.

Split-Second and Red Blast

New 28 Aug 2019 Asked by toanswerandfollow 31 Comments

Changes of a split-second creature? And of Red Elemental Blast returning?

I don’t think split second has a great chance of returning.Red Elemental Blast is both overpowered and out of color pie, so its return is even less likely than split second.

Enemy Mirrors Possibility

New 19 Jun 2019 Asked by beowuuf 37 Comments

Lifeforce / Deathgrip, White Knight / Black Knight, Blue Elemental Blast / Red Elemental Blast. These mirror images were nice ways of showing the colours in opposition without it being mistaken for a cycle. Would you do such things again (without colour pie violation or as severe hosing) as a way to show enemy colours?

We do enemy mirrors from time to time.

Counter Spells

New 10 Jan 2019 Asked by vriskerz-deactivated20190423 36 Comments

Do you think we could get more counter spells like red elemental blast or guttural response: Gruul counter hate?

That’s not something red does any more. It’s not really something it’s done outside of early Magic (with the one exception).
Red can copy spells though and that can be used to counter counterspells that can counter themselves.

Red Elemental Blast Future

New 06 Oct 2018 Asked by toanswerandfollow 30 Comments

Will we ever see the return of Red Elemental Blast?

Not in Standard. It’s both too powerful and out of color pie.

Hybrid Cards Colors

New 26 Apr 2018 Asked by mrmoustachemm 22 Comments

Have you thought about changing the rules for hybrid cards to care what colour(s) of mana was spent to cast it? That way my opponent couldn't Red Elemental Blast my Murkfiend Liege if I only spent green to cast it.

Hybrid cards are always all their colors regardless of how you cast it.

Rules Versus Design

New 25 Oct 2017 Asked by gabecampos89 27 Comments

I think the underlying issue on commander is that you're looking at the vantage point of a designer, while some of us are looking at it through rules point of view. Is Sygg, River Cutthroat targetable for Dark Banishing? No, he is black. Can Red Elemental Blast counter it? Yes, it is blue.

Of course I’m looking it as a designer. Magic is many games connected by a unified set of rules. When one version works differently than all the other versions it increases confusion and makes it harder to transition between formats.

Pyroblast vs Elemental Blast

New 10 Feb 2016 Asked by damullet 34 Comments

To answer the earlier Question Mark - Pyroblast is better than Red Elemental Blast because it can target anything, and does something "if it's blue", where REB is uncastable against nonblue decks. This doesn't matter often, but since they're otherwise identical, why not get the edge.

Counterspell Comparison

New 10 Feb 2016 Asked by nerdyhologrampizza 42 Comments

Long time reader; first time asker: Was it a joke to put Red Elemental Blast against Pyroblast. Are they not the same? Or is there some subtle difference between them? I feel like I missed something.

There’s long been a debate which was better. Ethan (who compiled Head-to-Head: Counterspells) wanted to finally settle the issue. Pyroblast appears to be winning.

Non-Rotating Format Issue

New 07 Nov 2015 Asked by mraptronym 23 Comments

I do have an issue with blue having the fewest strong creatures as a weakness. It doesn't work in non-rotating formats the way white not having draw or red not dealing with enchantments does. Those only go away when R&D messes up, but blue naturally accumulates enough good creatures in these formats even as R&D do their job perfectly for standard. A color's identity should be preserved across formats, and weaknesses should be chosen to reflect that. Blue being reactive is a fine weakness though.

Red gets Chaos Warp and Anarchy and Red Elemental Blast and things it shouldn’t get in “all of Magic”. The color pie is about now. I can’t undo mistakes of the past.

Color Pie Weapons

New 27 Jan 2015 Asked by szwanger 15 Comments

What are examples of "that thing where you allowed colors to use mechanics from their opponents' part of the color pie as weapons when fighting against them" ?

Blue Elemental Blast and Red Elemental Blast are two of the most famous. Blue cannot destroy permanents and Red cannot counter spells.
