Impact of Standard Rotation Changes

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by bobinthings 2 Comments

Does the change to 3-year standard rotations, have any impact on the ethos of “someone’s 1 or 2 is someone else’s 9 or 10”/“if everyone likes it but but no one loves it you fail”? For people that really don’t like something it’s then 3 whole years before the game moves on from it (in standard - the only format that does move on).
I’ve been playing on and off since 2004, got back in at the start of this year when my 2nd daughter was born and I got arena on my phone as something to do when sat up in the night. I’m okay with Innistrad and New Phyrexia but from what I’ve seen so far the horror vibe in Duskmourn is just too far for me, to the point that I’m doubting I’ll bother with Bloomburrow because I can’t see myself enjoying Duskmourn in standard all the way through to Autumn 2027, the year before my 6-month old daughter starts primary school.

Magic excels at providing lots of variety, so people can pick and choose what they want to play. It doesn’t excel at excluding things, because the thing you don’t like is someone else’s favorite thing. 9&10’s tend to come with 1&2’s because things that provoke reactions most often provoke positive *and* negative reaction. There are formats where you can only focus on the thing you like - limited formats & cube.

Possibility of Provoke's Return

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by violet-returned 27 Comments

I know at least one person for whom Provoke is their favorite mechanic of all time, is there any chance we'll see it return to a premiere set someday?

Fight becoming evergreen has made provoke returning a bit of a challenge.

Insta-gator Mechanic

New 25 Mar 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 21 Comments

"Insta-gator has to have Goad somehow, so it can be an instigator, right?" I think Provoke would be perfect

Fight has usurped provoke. Insta-gator could force a fight.

More Guessing Games

New 28 Jan 2024 Asked by thegameeismine 47 Comments

Hi Mark. I love love love LOVE the card design for the new Prisoner's Dilemma. These kinds of effects that put your opponents in miniature guessing games and provoke them to turning on one another are excellent for EDH. Is there a chance we can see more of this kind of effect? Maybe in Esper colours for those of us who love Sphinx / riddle tribal and making our opponents suffer? :D

There very much is a possibility.

Creature Design Query

Could we ever have a creature that has convoke, evoke, and provoke?

Would it be broke? : )

Provoke Mechanic Rating

New 29 Mar 2023 Asked by onlyjuanmedia 27 Comments

With the advent of Battle cards, now we have two card types that can be attacked directly. Does this lowers Provoke in Storm Scale from it current standing of 9?

No, still a 9.

Evoke on the Storm Scale

New 13 Mar 2022 Asked by idan1234 34 Comments

I saw the provoke question and though it meant that *evoke* was a 9. But since we’re on the topic, what’s evoke on the storm scale?

I think it’s a 5. I would like to bring it back.

Provoke on the Storm Scale

Where is provoke on the storm scale? I think it’s super cool!

I’d call it a 9. Tricky to have it coexist with fight and fight is evergreen.

Mechanics from Set Constraints

New 07 Feb 2022 Asked by philosophile42 27 Comments

Oh yes… Legions! And I thought fight was partly inspired by provoke, which was in the same block. It feels like the “all creatures” set constraints produced two mechanics that have gone on to use a lot of use. I could imagine other deeply restrictive settings could also produce similar results, like a creature-less set as a pure exercise.

The earliest designs that eventually led to fight predate provoke, although it did help move us in that direction. As for restrictions, we’ve found you can have them without having to be all or nothing. Strixhaven had a strong instant/sorcery theme, but the set wasn’t all instants and sorceries.

Potential for Retired Abilities

New 05 Jul 2021 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 20 Comments

Would there ever be a time a Standard set might have a one of of a retired ability a singke creature with Fear, or Landwalk, Provoke, Intimidate or Regeneration? Or would that create more expectations even if announced a single one time only event style thing ?

It’s unlikely, especially in a premier set.

Possibility of Provoke in Red

New 18 May 2021 Asked by brom-stormcrow 29 Comments

To weigh in on the provoke conversation. Is there a chance we could see it return in red? Alongside goad effects provoke always struck me as more red than green. And then wouldn't overlap greens fight mechanics.

Fight is secondary in red.

Request to Re-implement Provoke

New 18 May 2021 Asked by gridnack 47 Comments

I like provoke more than fight. It allows for trample, first strike, double strike, boast, raid, counts as combat damage, etc., and it works great with multiple combat phases. It can also be stapled onto creatures as an ability which distracts a blocker. It also feels very green to happen in combat vs an instant speed option, which feels more like a kill spell with a drawback. So, may I please request provoke return and fight be retired? Also, if creatures can directly attack planeswalkers, can we either tweak it or get a new ability that can attack a specific creature, without untapping it? I want to attack and avatar of woe with first strike, instant of trading from fight or untapping it only to retap.

I have some bad news for you. We’re pretty happy with how fight is working out.

Odds of Provoke's Future Inclusion

New 18 May 2021 Asked by highlysynergistic 27 Comments

I was thinking. I actually think provoke as a mechanic was such a blast and might actually be a solid mechanic for green in general. How likely would it be to include provoke into future sets?

Fight being evergreen keeps provoke’s return chances low.

Provocation Mechanic Considerations

Has R&D considered bringing back provoke as the UR evergreen mechanic?

Provoke is too close to fight.

Provoke in the Storm Scale

New 14 Feb 2021 Asked by justasmallquestion 44 Comments

Hey Mark, where is Provoke in the Storm Scale? I think a mechanic that allows "attacking a creature" instead of a player would be within white's color pie and a good tool in its arsenal. What do you think?

With fight evergreen, I’m skeptical of provoke returning.

Thoughts on Provoke Keyword

What are your thoughts on Provoke as the U/R key word?

I don’t believe we’ll do provoke while fight exists as an evergreen keyword. Also, provoke is not very blue.

Probably a 9. Fight existing makes its return unlikely.

If white got provoke, is there a possibility of white being tertiary in fight? Or is white getting provoke a mistake?

Forced blocking is in green and red.

Provoke's Return?

Any chance provoke will make a comeback? Always found it to be an interesting mechanic.

Unlikely with fight evergreen.
