Metathran

Metathran Color Identity

“ I believe we’ve only ever done the metathran in blue.” do you consider a blue Metathran with a red activated ability not blue, or did you misread the question?

A blue Metathran with a red activated ability is still a base blue Metathran.

Why is there no metathran with a red mana cost for an activated ability, if you know. Have a nice day :)

I believe we’ve only ever done the metathran in blue.

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

Urza's Combo Article

My favorite Maro memory is... reading the Duelist after Urza's Destiny was released, you had written an article with some 2 card combos showing off the new set. Metathran Solider + Sigil of Sleep was the first all common combo I'd seen and I was really excited to try it out : )

One of the first things I ever wrote for Wizards (in some ancient book) was a article about two-card combos.

Metathran Future Prospects

Whatever happened to the Metathran? Any chance of seeing them again? (I love Magic's unique races)

Well, I never Metathran I didn’t like. : ) As far as I know, there is no immediate plans to use them, but perhaps one day.

Oracle Updates and Errata

New 16 Jan 2012 Asked by manwhoquestionsmaro-blog 2 Comments

On the topic of Oracle updates and errata'd cards. You talk about how R&D only wants cards to do what they say, even though a lot of cards got a huge change to their subtypes. Like, the Planeshift Battlemages. And the entire subtype "Metathran" is only actually printed on 1 card, out of 8 "Metathrans." Changing subtypes is pretty close to as huge of a change as changing the effects of their abilities.

Most of the subtype changes were to make the cards match expectation or to match modern uses of sub types. While it was not perfect (and yes, in some areas we probably went further than we should) it is a far cry from making a card work differently. Sub types mattering is a low percentage issue. Working like the card says it does matters all the time.
