Historical Figures Representation

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by waltertusk 25 Comments

Super excited for the creative designs in mh3 and bloomburrow looks to be just how I hoped! One interesting note -- someone else pointed out the representation of historical figures in assasins creed. Interestingly, Magic has already done this on a pretty big scale with portal three kingdoms, where many real chinese warlords from the period got cards.

That is a good point (which Aaron made in the panel).

P3K Reprints Possibility

Could we ever see universes within reprints of the cards from P3K? Or is China considered canon in mtg lore?

Some, with more generic names, could get reprinted.

Cultural Representation Wishes

New 02 Nov 2023 Asked by panshios 49 Comments

Even tho I'm very happy with the dive into deeper mesoamerican culture inspired lore. I'm extremely dissapointed by the inclusion of Incan lore into the mix. It feels like it was all meshed together "because they're latam, they're the same/similar" and I was hoping for a South American inspired plane in the future. Feels like mixing chinese and japanese cultures "cuz they're asian", and I couldn't feel less forgotten as a South American myself. Any chances of getting a proper South American inspired plane anytime?

It is on the “short” list.

Holiday Traditions

New 24 Dec 2022 Asked by djunknown0 48 Comments

As a Jewish guy I’ve always enjoyed the traditional Jewish Christmas, Chinese food and a movie. Did you ever do that before you got married? Also, what’s your favorite thing about Christmas that Lora introduced to you?

That was Christmas Eve in my childhood. : )Marrying Lora, meant I now celebrate Christmas, although more the pomp and circumstance part than the spirituality part. My favorite thing is all the colored lights

Disemvowel Rule Nuances

New 07 Oct 2022 Asked by hovdenes 17 Comments

I'm writing an article on Unfinity rules questions. How goes Disemvowel work against like a German language card? How about Russian (which has 10 vowels)? How about Chinese, which I think has no vowels? My guess was use the language as written, unless you don't know how, then use English.

It looks at the actual name of the card. If that language has an A, E, I, O, U, or Y, it counts them. If they don’t it doesn’t.

Universality of College Subjects

New 29 Jun 2022 Asked by dopebearhoagiepeach-deactivated 35 Comments

"Don’t all colleges teach math, history, science, and language?" I can only speak to the field of History (what I teach), but history is studied vastly differently around the world as a result of tradition. For example, Western historiography was influenced by the enlightenment and individual scholars documenting the past (which fits WR). But Chinese historiographic pursuits were a state function and tied to creating official records of dynasties (which feels more WU).

I wasn’t saying what or how they studied it was the same, just that colleges teach some element of history (assuming they’re a more general college and not just teaching a specific subset of things, like a communications school). The general subject matter at large was universal.

Incorporating Other Asian Cultures

New 03 Feb 2022 Asked by georgehadley 42 Comments

Hey Mark, Neon Dynasty has surpassed my expectations in terms of story and world building- congratulations to the creative team. A question - if you were to do magic takes on other Asian cultures (Korea, China, etc.) do you think those would/could be integrated into Kamigawa, or is that plane too specifically Japanese and a different plane would be needed?

I assume they would be their own worlds. Khans of Tarkir did touch upon some of what you’re asking about.

Walls as Non-creatures

New 21 Jan 2022 Asked by evilwill2112 32 Comments

As I understand it, You believe Walls should be Walls not creatures. With the way the mechanics are set in the game, would this require a separate destroy/control mechanic? Or should it be recognized they're either any artifact or a construct?I agree they're not rightly classed as a creature, after all, "Wall of Stone" would be depending on the flavor could be seen Artifact (Great Wall of China or Hadrian's Wall) Creature (Wall of Flesh). But classifying them all as a creature seemed a bit over simplifying

You were misunderstanding me. Creatures with defender would get different flavor. We might make the occasional artifact with the flavor of a wall that says something like “All attacking creatures get -1/-0.”

Possibility of a Roman Set

New 04 Dec 2021 Asked by bloody-altima 77 Comments

I'm not sure why Roman mythology is a particular sticking point for a Roman inspired set. Most popular conception of Rome really just does not fixate upon its spiritual aspect so much on its martial, architectural, and statecraft aspects. Gladiator games, legions marching, senators and emperors conspiring, trade with China... all of these are more prominent than the gods we named planets after in most depictions of Rome, including most history books.

Most stories don’t have to worry about having a the breadth of creatures Magic needs.

Absence of Chinese Traditional Foils

New 23 Oct 2021 Asked by sharpefan7354 18 Comments

In 1999 there were three expansions released that contained premium cards, Urza's Legacy, Destiny and Mercadian Masques.

There were eight possible languages, but foils for only seven.
Chinese Traditional product included English foils.

Why did this happen?

I’m not sure, but my guess is the volume wasn’t high enough to do premiums/foils at the proper ratio.

Choosing Cyberpunk Influence for Kamigawa

New 25 Aug 2021 Asked by nergalion 48 Comments

Why choose cyberpunk specifically as a influence on Kamigawa Neon Dinasty since the cyberpunk genre already has a lot of japanese and Chinese influence in its core identity? Shouldn't you choose a different genre as influence to differentiate the set from other media properties?

We tend to lean into resonance, not away from it.

Trivia on Mu Yanling

Hello Maro! It's finally my birthday and I would like to request a piece of trivia on Mu Yanling :)

Yanling was designed as part of a core set-like product specifically created for the Chinese market. I believe she’s inspired by Chinese mythology. Happy Birthday!

Assigning Chinese Elements to Colors

New 12 Jun 2021 Asked by beowuuf 73 Comments

If you had to assign the Chinese elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, Metal) to the five colours, how would you choose to split them?

Fire has to be red and water has to be blue. Either earth or wood could be green. My gut is to give earth to white and metal to black. It’s not a perfect fit though

Chinese Philosophy and Magic Colors

New 12 Jun 2021 Asked by szwanger 33 Comments

Historically, Chinese philosophy uses a system of five elements, with air absent and in its place are wood and metal. What Magic colors would wood and metal fall under as elements?

Wood is green. Metal is artifact. Blue if a color.

Request for Multilingual Card Previews

New 28 May 2021 Asked by groundawesome 57 Comments

I know it isn't your decision but maybe you could bring it up to someone who does have the power. Can you PLEASE give previewers all eleven languages of a Preview Card. It is really frustrating when a card is revealed in Spanish or Chinese and I am sure it is just as frustrating when it is revealed in English for people who speak other languages.

The previewer only previews in the local language as it’s too unwieldy to preview eleven different versions of a card. Once the card is put in Gatherer, it has access to all the printed languages.

Inquiry on Global Series

New 24 Dec 2020 Asked by centurosplaneswalker 58 Comments

For something named Global Series, it seems odd that there is still only one set two years later. Are there plans to make this an actual series?

The set was made as an introduction set to the Chinese market. I agree the name is misleading. It was never intended as an ongoing thing.

Different Language MTG Cards

New 17 Nov 2020 Asked by lgosvse 55 Comments

Re: "We print in 11 languages" Actually, if you include obscure promos from the past, there are actually 18 languages that Magic cards can potentially be: Arabic, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Classic Greek, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Phyrexian, Pig Latin, Portuguese, Russian, Sanskrit, and Spanish.

A fine piece of trivia.
