Commander Mode in Arena

New 29 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 37 Comments

Also, Commander is the most popular played format in tabletop. I believe Standard is still the most popular format played on digital.

Do you think this might be because Arena doesn't have a standardized Commander mode, and instead utilizes Historic Brawl as a close comparison?

That might play into it, but I assume the main reason is the desire for fast, competitive, one-on-one play.

Creature Type Error

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by pikachugirltits 27 Comments

Hey Mark, your teaser listed a Rhino Brawler as one of the creatures types in the set, but the card Railway Brawler was just spoiled as a Rhino Warrior. Was this an error in your teaser or is Brawler a new creature type?

It was an error in the teaser.

Praise for Frodo Design

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by jozogozo 24 Comments

I know it came out last year, but could you high five the designer of the uncommon Frodo Baggins card? It's been by far my favorite Brawl commander since it came out and is a huge flavor homerun. It's very satisfying on many levels to beat a board of huge overbearing creatures with the little halfling.

Will do.

Commander Reference Clarification

New 09 Feb 2024 Asked by piccadilly-blue 30 Comments

>We don’t write the word “Commander” in rules text of premier set cards.Well, you did. Once. Arcane Signet from Throne of Eldraine was standard-legal because you guys were really trying to push Brawl as a format at the time.

Sorry, in premier booster sets.

Arena Team Transparency

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by sombramainexe 31 Comments

Do you know if there's any public facing member of the Arena team with a blog or something similar like you? It's really nice to have transparency and communication with the paper game, but I know things like asking for a Timeless Brawl queue would be out of your realm.

I am somewhat of a unique entity. Others have started blogs, but everyone other than me seems to peter out over time.

Brawl Format Query

New 25 Dec 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 33 Comments

Will we ever get a version of Brawl with no alchemy rebalances? Or do you not have much contact with the Arena team?

Arena is far outside my purview.

Life Gain Comparison

New 30 May 2023 Asked by nodnaut-blog 25 Comments

The largest swath of personal data I can pull from is from historic brawl and limited on arena and it feels to me that white's life gain is a clear tier ahead of black. Soul sister effects get the engine going quick. Black drain is a different kind of build altogether and Orzhov tends to lean into the black elements rather than pure life gain.

Commander Printing

New 10 Apr 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 33 Comments

If/When: An "Inspiring Commander" paper printing as a part of something like a commander pre-con. I understand it's a break, but so are lots of old cards that make it into commander products. A card I love for historic brawl I wish I could have in paper.

If. Our rule is we don’t put color pie breaks into formats they don’t exist already.

Multiplayer Format Support

New 24 Dec 2022 Asked by madeahippo-blog 33 Comments

Hey Mark just wanted to ask a question since there has been a lot of Commander chat lately. Do you feel like Commander is the only big multiplayer format you guys will design for? I know support for Brawl in paper didn't last but will there ever be another well supported multiplayer format in Magic's future? I feel like having alternate play modes is always a good thing personally, but I wondered what you and R&D's takes on this might be?

We support what players are playing. If another multiplayer format takes a strong hold, we’ll probably design for that as well.

Legendary Creatures in Alchemy

New 07 Dec 2022 Asked by questionm4ster 31 Comments

Please pass along to the appropriate people that I (and many others) like having legendary creatures be included in Alchemy, as they can be used as commanders in Historic Brawl. Also of note, Alchemy cards are are one of the draws to play Arena, and not every card (most Alchemy cards literally DO NOT WORK in paper) can be played in every format like Commander.

As with most issues, there are people on both sides who feel strongly.

Baldurs Gate Set Appreciation

New 19 Jul 2022 Asked by quality-void-collection-deactiv 34 Comments

I know I’m a bit late to the party for it but I just wanted to say how fantastically fun the baldurs gate set has been! I mainly play Historic Brawl on Arena and have had an absolute blast trying to build decks around the new commanders of the set! Particularly Minthara of The Absolute, her card design perfectly reflects the character’s personality as seen in BG3! Please pass on some high fives to whoever worked on the set!!

High fives will be passed along.

Teferi Planeswalker Possibilities

Can I get a maybe on a Teferi planeswalker in Dominaria United or in the near future? He's my favourite planeswalker and Historic Brawl commander. Excited for Dominatia United and Unfinity!

Maybe. : )

History of Hybrid Cost Cards

New 31 May 2022 Asked by woman-of-the-fen 130 Comments

(In reference to an earlier ask from someone else about Hybrid cards in Commander.) When did Hybrid cost cards come out, and when did Commander's rules get codified? You can certainly design cards with an intention, but if your original intention is not being upheld thats hardly the same thing as making rares when pauper exists.

The Commander format predates hybrid mana coming out.Hybrid works the same in every format but Commander (and by extension Brawl). All of those formats added together are the majority of Magic play. Also, the entire point of hybrid mana is it’s “or” not “and”, so if we want to design “and” we use traditional multicolor.

I’m excited to see everyone drafting the Brushwagg archetype in Streets of New Capenna.

Running Kaito Brawl Tactics

New 12 Feb 2022 Asked by popcornbunni 28 Comments

Just from the play on Arena (Running Kaito Brawl), huge thumbs up for the Ninjas with "only once" Ninjutsu payoffs. While it seems like an unfortunate drawback, it allows for a "level up moment" when you ninjutsu one back to hand, then use it's own Ninjutsu again to get the once-only trigger.

Feedback on Historic Alchemy Rebalancing

New 26 Jan 2022 Asked by morderschatten 41 Comments

Hi Maro,I love the game and all of the exciting things coming up, but am a bit frustrated with Alchemy 'rebalancing' affecting Historic, especially Historic Brawl. Is there any chance that we can get a Historic Format without rebalanced cards? They are still in the programming for Normal standard.
Thanks and keep up the great work with this game!

I can pass along the request.

Thoughts on Blizzard Brawl

New 23 Jan 2022 Asked by jonpaulcardenas 35 Comments

I want to say I was very interested in getting your thoughts on Blizzard Brawl, and Understanding your perspective on it is really cool. We have very different views on power level/Balance and how Meta should impact what we think about cards and how they function, but your perspective was different than what I thought it would be. Could you give yourself a hi five for me? :)

Done.

Addressing Blizzard Brawl's Power

New 23 Jan 2022 Asked by yaksha89 71 Comments

The problem with blizzard brawl is simply power level. Nothing it does shouldn't be done in green. Just doing it all for 1 green mana is excessive. Its effect on a stalled board makes it feel like a 3 or 4 mana spell

Yes, it’s important to separate power level from color pie. While there is some correlation, it’s nowhere as high as a lot of people think.

Blizzard Brawl vs Kill Spells

New 22 Jan 2022 Asked by crazedporcupine 39 Comments

You yourself said that just because a card could do everything in pie, it doesn't always mean it should be printed. The biggest argument that you've said is the death touch fight spell in green. Many people feel that blizzard brawl is similar in that it is just a kill spell that is just too strong in that it also serves as a protection spell. Sure everything is in pie, but while green can get bite effects, and fighting, blizzard brawl is like the mono green death touch fight spell in that its too close to just a "kill target creature" spell in mono green.

The needing a big enough creature is what makes it different from the fight + deathtouch example.

Color Pie Integrity and Blizzard Brawl

New 22 Jan 2022 Asked by soranetworker 33 Comments

I think the issue people have with Blizzard Brawl isn't so much that it's a color pie break, but rather that when bite/fight effects are too strong it starts to encroach on Red's direct damage part of the color pie. Is keeping each color separate as important as preventing breaks? Or is it more of a pendulum thing?

Red not having to have a big enough creature with its direct damage (most of the time) is a big differential.
