Ancestral Recall Set Idea

New 13 Sep 2023 Asked by blasphazar 29 Comments

Wait there was a set that wasn't greenlit that was designed around making cards as strong as ancestral recall? Or was that a joke?

It was an idea pitched by Bill Rose that never got made. I don’t think Bill was super serious about it.

Fact or Fiction Origins

New 23 Jul 2023 Asked by brandongcg 50 Comments

Hey Mark! Was having a conversation with my housemate about how good a design Fact or Fiction is, and wondered if you knew who designed it? If so give them a high five from both of us

The divy mechanic (put cards into piles, someone picks one) was made by Bill Rose, Mike Elliott, and myself. The person who really championed Fact or Fiction was Randy Buehler who pushed it to be a tournament regular.

Uncovering Purple Mechanics

New 08 Jul 2023 Asked by delicateturtleangel 49 Comments

Hi Mark, thanks for answering my last ask, now I get the vantage point from which you answered the original ask.But that got me thinking...In his article, Paul mentions that there were 2 mechanics that were created for Purple: [new mechanic A] and [new mechanic B]. For instance in the file there were:CP3 - 2P - 2/2 [new mechanic B]UP 3- 3PP - 3/3 Flying, [new mechanic A]RP1 - 1PP - 3/2 First Strike, [new mechanic A]He mentions that they playtested these mechanics and that they were quite powerful. As was the policy at the time, R&D didn't disclose information about unused mechanics, so they were edited out of the document. Now that the policy of sharing such information has changed, would it be possible for you to ask around or look into your email archives to let us know what they were? His last email where these were discussed (at least from those he shared with us) is dated July 18th 2005 at 1:34 PM and was sent to Bill Rose, Matt Place and yourself if that helps unearth this mystery.

I won’t have access to my work computer until the office opens back up which won’t be for a few months. I won’t have old emails, but I could have old card files. Remind me when I start having “Drive to Work” podcasts that are actual drives to work.

Purple Mana Discussion

New 19 Jun 2023 Asked by modoqm 32 Comments

The sixth color in Planar Chaos was Purple, between black and blue. Purple-shifted version of Mana Drain and Hymn to Tourach was looked at. It was "time" and had countering and discard. According to Bill Rose. Standard would have been brutal so I'm kinda glad that didn't happen. The idea of putting it in the middle of all five, instead of between black and blue, came later. You talked about that idea in a 2019 interview.

We had talked about various different ideas during Planar Chaos, including it being in the center. None of them came to pass (we killed the idea pretty early in design), so I was remembering a different one than the one I wrote about in my article. Apologies.

Struggle for Historic

New 10 Jun 2023 Asked by johnjanuarius 49 Comments

I would have figured landfall was the mechanic you "had to fight tooth and nail to get in." Was historic that much harder to convince the rest of Wizards about than landfall?

I barely got historic in Dominaria. I had to do extensive work to prove to Bill Rose, the VP of R&D, that it deserved to be there:

Power Lunch Product

New 06 Dec 2022 Asked by elmarcodepico 46 Comments

How likely are we to ever see a Power Lunch type product (in gold border)? Has the likelihood shifted at all over the years?

It has not.Power Lunch was an idea by Bill Rose where all the cards are of the power level where Ancestral Recall was average. We’ve learned that Magic doesn’t handle “this is a special exception and not how the game normally functions” products well. (Think Planar Chaos.)

Kamigawa Creation Insight

New 05 Oct 2022 Asked by tsukinoinaba 30 Comments

if I may request a piece of birthday trivia, do you perhaps have any interesting facts about Kamigawa you'd like to share?

It came about because Bill Rose, then the Head Designer, wanted to do a set where we designed the world before making the mechanics. The runner-up to a Japanese inspired set, was an Egyptian one.Happy Birthday!

Studio X Explanation

New 08 Sep 2022 Asked by ichthysfreak 26 Comments

What is Studio X? I see it pop up on Blogatog occasionally. Is that an updated name for R&D to go with the new paradigm of Vision/Set/Play Design?

A number of years back, we changed how we organized Wizards. Tabletop Magic is now overseen by Bill Rose and is one large group with the original placeholder, but its seems to have stuck, name of Studio X. Studio X includes everyone who makes tabletop Magic from the designers to the creative people to the editors to the graphic designers to the people that handle layout and printing to the marketers to the architects and business people (and I’m forgetting many sections - I apologize).

Drive to Work Guests

New 30 Jul 2022 Asked by es88888888 21 Comments

Just started listening to your awesome Drive to work podcast. Which members of the early early Magic testers have you had the opportunity to have on the show? From an oral history perspective it'd be awesome to have more of them on for a Magic anniversary event.

I’ve had Richard Garfield, Bill Rose, Charlie Catino, Skaff Elias, and Jim Lin on.

Maro Card Naming Origins

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 45 Comments

On the note of Maro, the story you have told was that you designed the card, it was put into the file under your office's message system naming convention ma(rk) ro(sewater) and no one realized or didn't mind the incidental vanity card.

That is not the story I told as it isn’t the story. I filled a hole in a Mirage development meeting. Bill Rose wrote Maro on it because it was what he typed into our email system to get my name. The creative team was aware it was named after me, but thought it sounded okay and left it. It predates R&D’s no vanity rule (so it’s grandfathered in).

Long-Time Magic Workers

New 28 Nov 2021 Asked by theuninvitedghost 56 Comments

Who actively works on magic that’s been around the longest, other than you?

Bill Rose has continually worked on Magic for three weeks longer than me, although as VP, he’s less hands on.

Earlier Position of Bill Rose

I think Jim Lin was VP of R&D when Bill was Head Designer.

Trivia About One Mana Cards

New 22 May 2021 Asked by attracte 75 Comments

Hey Mark! My birthday was yesterday, and I was wondering if you had any trivia about one mana value cards over the years?? (I have a One Drop Cube!)

Phyrexian Dreadnought (Mirage)This card came about because I wanted to add a 12/12 to Magic. You see, Alpha had an 8/8 in Force of Nature. Antiquities had a 9/9 in Colossus of Sardia. The Dark then got a 10/10 in Leviathan. Followed up by the 11/11 Polar Kraken in Ice Age. This seemed like a fun game that I wanted to continue playing. Bill Rose, now Vice President of R&D, was the lead designer of Mirage. He said he would add it if I could design a cool enough card. The next day I returned and said, “Is a 12/12 trampler for 1 cool enough?”Happy Birthday!

Homelands Trivia Anecdote

New 15 May 2021 Asked by aliceshiki123 48 Comments

Mark, yesterday was my 25th birthday! May I ask a trivia on your favorite card from Homelands?

Sure. Bill Rose came to Wizards to interview for a job. After the interview, which went well, they had him sit in on a Homelands development meeting. They had a hole in blue, so Bill gave them a card from the set he was working on (Mirage) to fill the hole. That card is my favorite card in Homelands - Memory Lapse. Happy Birthday!

Ovinomancer Origins

New 13 May 2021 Asked by billymackcollector 185 Comments

Today is my birthday! I'd love to know if you have any trivia about my favorite forgotten creature, ovinomancer. I loved ovinize and makes me think there might be some more to know!!!

Back in the day, a lot of Magic R&D played Warcraft. We had a LAN at work, and it was a popular late night activity. One of the spells in Warcraft let you turn creatures into sheep, and Bill Rose loved using the spell. So much so, that he made a Magic card that turned creatures into sheep. I was not interested in playing Warcraft, so instead, I used my time talking to the receptionist who sat by the LAN. (We were testing the waters of opening game stores and we had one at work to test it and that’s where the LAN was.) Her name was Lora. This year we celebrate our 23rd anniversary. : )

Creation of Character Teferi

New 20 Apr 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 37 Comments

Do you know who created the character Teferi? He's my favorite planeswalker and am very curious how the character came to be, what inspired him and which person(s) were responsible for designing him?

The initial Mirage story (where Teferi premiered) was created by the design team (Bill Rose, Joel Mick, Charlie Catino, Don Felice, Howard Kahlenberg and Elliot Siegel).

Rolling the Dice for Trivia

New 11 Apr 2021 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 113 Comments

Just for fun, could you roll a d20 and give us trivia based on the resulting number?

Okay, I rolled a 12.The first 12/12 was Phyrexian Dreadnaught. Alpha had Force of Nature which was an 8/8. Antiquities had Colossus of Sardia which was a 9/9. The Dark had Leviathan which was a 10/10. Ice Age had Polar Kraken which was an 11/11. In Mirage development, I wanted to make a 12/12, but Bill Rose, the lead developer of the set, said he would only add one if it was a cool design. I created Phyrexian Dreadnaught and showed it to him. He put it right in the set.

Role of VP at WotC

New 24 May 2020 Asked by aliceshiki123 28 Comments

Mark! I wanted to say I loved your podcast with Bill Rose! It was really nice hearing about both of your experiences in the super old days of Magic... That said, I was a bit sad that he ended up saying nothing about the modern days of Magic in it, like... I was really curious, what does he even do nowadays at WotC? Like, I know he is the VP of Magic, but what does that mean? Like, what does the job of a VP entail? I was really curious about that, would be nice if you could tell us a bit! >.

I’ll probably have Bill on again. He and I have worked together on Magic for 25 years. We have a lot to talk about.

Sharing Love for Lorwyn and Shadowmoor

New 10 May 2020 Asked by sanschutz07 29 Comments

Hello sir, it was my birthday on the 6th but I've been busy working at a local hospital so I hope a late question or in this case feedback is ok. Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are my favorite sets. It is the sets I taught my brother how to play. I bought the ultimate secret lair just for the lorwyn marsh flats. That's it thank you sir.

Lorwyn and Shadowmoor came about because I told Bill Rose (VP of R&D) I’d find a way to make a four set block work. Happy Belated Birthday!
