Request for Aikido Support

New 20 Oct 2021 Asked by aniodia 23 Comments

In the color pie article, you mentioned that damage redirection isn't something that is done that often anymore. However, I find that cards like Deflecting Palm, Backlash, and (possibly my favorite Magic card ever) Reflect Damage support an interesting style of gameplay, nicknamed "aikido" since it's all about turning attacks on you back onto the opponent. Would I be able to ask you (and by extension R&D) for a legendary creature that would explicitly support such a style in the future?

Any effect can be built around. When we stop or greater lower the occurrence of an effect, it means we’re preventing players from accessing a certain strategy or strategies. So a strategy existing isn’t unto itself a reason to start doing something we’ve stopped. And for what it’s worth, back in the day, I made a pretty potent white/blue aikido deck.

Storytelling Critique

New 28 Sep 2019 Asked by nedistro 45 Comments

Hey Mark - I'm yet another enfranchised minority player who is really, really disappointed that the golden standard for MTG storytelling is Batman repeatedly locking up the Joker. I would hate for MTG to become an IP where the card game repeats the same story over and over because that's what worked in the past. There's been a lot of backlash at Marvel and DC for leaning into that strategy for the comics in favor of other media (movies, TV, etc) being where the innovation is.

We’ve never repeated our story, but we have had villains show up again. That’s pretty standard for any ongoing story. And while it’s fine if comics aren’t your personal media of choice, they are very popular with a lot of people, myself included. Please remember that different people might enjoy things you personally don’t. You not liking them doesn’t inherently make them of less quality. Many excellent stories have been told in the comics medium, a large number using Batman. The Dark Knight Returns, for example, is in my person top 10 of comic stories. I recommend Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics if you want to get a better understanding of comics as a storytelling medium.

Buy-a-Box Controversy

New 09 Apr 2019 Asked by plipsservers-blog 59 Comments

Hi Mark, I genuinely hope you take the time to read and respond to this post. I am to understand that since Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge is apparently the buy-a-box promo, it will not be in packs? If so, how could WotC do this to us? Wasn't the backlash against Nexus of Fate enough to prevent a BaB like this from happening again? Very, very disappointing.

We’re being more careful with the Standard viability of our Buy-a-Box cards, but we’re not stopping making them. They’re pretty popular and have sold a lot of boxes for local game stores.

Commander Design Philosophy

New 01 Dec 2018 Asked by saxtirical 38 Comments

R&D devotes more time and attention to commander than ever before and that's cool. People should be able to play in a way that they enjoy and if R&D can help then that's even better but every time I see someone talking about Commander here they seem to want the game to be designed solely with Commander in mind. I know you probably wouldn't want to bring attention to it because it's negative but is there some Commander backlash in the asks?

The tricky thing about designing Magic is making sure that every Standard-legal set speaks to every Magic player. I think it’s fine for players to want to look out for their favorite format, as long as they understand that we can’t look out for only their format. Most Question Marks seem to understand that.

Limited Run Product Success

New 08 Sep 2018 Asked by kandykidzero 20 Comments

something that I have wondered is when measuring success on limited run products. If they are only given 1-5 per store, and sell out but come with the negative backlash due to the limited run, is that still a success?

Limited run products always come with a negative backlash because, by their nature, not everyone can get their hands on one.

Feathered Dinosaurs

New 24 Jun 2018 Asked by youwillneverdiscoverwhoiam 43 Comments

What was the process behind making Ixalan's dinosaurs feathered like? I know it's more likely for real dinosaurs to have often been like that, but weren't the folks at WotC worried about the same backlash that Jurassic Park 3 got? I don't mind, but I do slightly prefer the featherless ones like gigantosaurus.

The setting wanted feathers anyway, so it seemed like a good fit. Not all of Magic’s Dinosaurs have feathers.

Color Break Ban

New 01 May 2018 Asked by coffeeandchai 78 Comments

If you had the ability to ban all color breaks that exist in all formats (or just most formats, maybe vintage would be different, you choose in your answer), with a guarantee that there would be no community backlash, would you do it? Would it improve/detract from the game?

I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Reserved List

New 25 Apr 2018 Asked by theroguepyro-blog 58 Comments

How big of a community backlash would be needed to finally kill the Reserved List?

If community unhappiness was what it took to get rid of the Reserved List, it would have been gone ages ago.

Jace Unbanning Feedback

New 13 Feb 2018 Asked by meitneri 31 Comments

What percentage of your recent asks have been backlash from the Jace unbanning?

There are people with thoughts in both directions. It’s a small amount of my in box though.

Multiple Test Proposal

New 01 Feb 2018 Asked by thesharkupon 34 Comments

I'm not sure if this would help, but what if there was a series of smaller multiple choice tests over the course of 1 week? So, 25 "easy" questions, cutting off the bottom 50%, 25 medium questions, cutting off another 25%, and then finally the last 25 difficult questions, bringing it down to the 100. I think a lot of the backlash is coming from the high threshold, so by artificially lowering it, the cutoff doesn't seem as steep, despite being the same. It would be a logistical nightmare, though.

The same number of people fail to advance. Would having to do it through three tests rather than one make people happier?

Eldrazi Set Frequency

New 23 Jun 2016 Asked by retrofrog2 59 Comments

As a player who started playing reasonably recently, but has quickly become quite enfranchised in the game, I feel like one of the things people are upset about, or at least I am myself, is that we get two eldrazi sets so close together, with the amount of backlash 2 returns got for the longest time, it's pretty understandable. With the release of eldritch moon, 3/7 of the sets I will have seen the release of will have contained eldrazi, or 2/3 of the blocks in another way of thinking.

I’m going to table this conversation until you all have seen the full set. Having so few cards is warping your perception of what the set is. Watch the Eldritch Moon trailer if you haven’t yet. Did it feel like Battle for Zendikar?

Griselbrand Backlash

New 22 Jun 2016 Asked by barrinmasterwiz 32 Comments

Hey Mark! Just wanted to say, as a person with OCD, I did not even immediatelly notice the mismatch of 7ns in Griselbrand, which remains one of my favorite cards ever and one that I fell instantly in love with. Any chance you are over-stating how much backlash you got from other players regarding this issue?

I am not overstating it. It was the loudest complaint I got from Avacyn Restored. And it was many times more complaints than anything else.

Handling Player Backlash

New 10 Jun 2016 Asked by drkrieger 26 Comments

Hi MaRo, I have a general question: How does R&D consider player backlash when designing a new mechanic or set? Judging from the number of angry emails you get, most of the recent sets couldn't have been universally loved.

The percentage of complaints on Blogatog is not representative of the overall percentage. I tend to post more negative emails so I can address the complaints.

Devoid and Eldrazi Perception

New 15 May 2016 Asked by wallycaine 10 Comments

I think a part of the negative reaction to Devoid may have been backlash against the problems you already noted about BFZ being a return to the wrong setting. Devoid may have been less disliked because of itself, and more because it was seen as a representation of the Eldrazi.

Maybe, but I think it goes deeper than that.

Unique Promo Card History

New 19 Jan 2016 Asked by jaxxisr 14 Comments

What was the last mechanically unique promotional card you made in a black border?

Nalathni Dragon given to Dragon Con attendees back in 1994. (We later put it into a Duelist due to the tremendous negative backlash.)

Oath Enchantments

New 11 Jan 2016 Asked by darkfk-deactivated20210503 24 Comments

Would a new Oath necessarily have to be an enchantment? Or after the backlash of the OGW incomplete cycle would you shy away from printing one as another permanent or spell type?

Oaths will always be enchantments.

Feedback on Plane Returns

New 02 Nov 2015 Asked by jstaal 64 Comments

Given your recent social media comments, it sounds like you've been getting a ton of push-back on returning to Innistrad right after Zendikar (though that doesn't line up with my anecdotal interactions thus far). Is there a vocal minority situation going on or is this an actual large backlash?

The negative minority always get more representation on social media because they want answers while the larger majority is just saying “Yeah!”, so there’s less to respond to.

Changeling Initial Reaction

New 09 Oct 2015 Asked by flopfoot 32 Comments

The first day changeling was spoiled there was a backlash, you got upset about people saying "you made mistform ultimate less special" but by the time the whole set was out and we saw what could be done with it, we loved it.

You are correct. I’d had forgotten the initial impression.

Changeling vs Devoid

New 09 Oct 2015 Asked by dukkhasatva 33 Comments

But was there a similar backlash to changeling as there was to devoid? (No subtext, we're just curious)

No, Changeling was pretty beloved.

Planeswalker Selection Backlash

New 05 Oct 2015 Asked by serahs-sanctuary 87 Comments

You just mentioned there are only two planeswalker cards in oath of the gatewatch. Are you ready for the inevitable backlash and rage for the planeswalker not being printed out of Jace, Chandra, and Nissa?

Prepare yourself now. In a completely unrelated point, Nissa’s looking mighty nice in the key art for Oath.
