Gigantosaurus

Ikoria Flavoring Critique

New 08 Mar 2022 Asked by honor-basquiat 66 Comments

A constructive note on Ikoria: I understand that the mutate mechanic was a MAJOR part of the set but having a set where the flavor was promoted and advertised as "Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths" but having only three creatures in the entire set with a power of 8 or greater was very disappointing and felt like a jarring disconnect and flavor fail. I was expecting to see several big Timmy/Tammy creatures like Gigantosaurus in a set with behemoths in the title.

You have the problem backwards. The mistake was putting “Behemoth” in the name of the set with that design. The design was done long before the name existed.

Mythic Rare Vanilla Creature

Hi, Mark. Has there ever been consideration to making a Mythic Rare vanilla creature? Isamaru, Hound of Konda and Gigantosaurus seemed to really push the limit of the cmc-to-power/toughness ratio, and they were only rares.

Unstable had one.

Vanilla Creatures Support

Vanilla creatures are great ways of pushing power on cards. However, all but the toughest, like Gigantosaurus, usually don’t see play. Are there any plans for vanilla-specific support, like Muraganda Petroglyphs?

A deck filled with vanilla creatures that doesn’t go anything unless you draw and cast your vanilla helping card doesn’t seem like particularly fun Magic.

Feathered Dinosaurs

What was the process behind making Ixalan's dinosaurs feathered like? I know it's more likely for real dinosaurs to have often been like that, but weren't the folks at WotC worried about the same backlash that Jurassic Park 3 got? I don't mind, but I do slightly prefer the featherless ones like gigantosaurus.

The setting wanted feathers anyway, so it seemed like a good fit. Not all of Magic’s Dinosaurs have feathers.

Gigantosaurus Clarification

Is Gigantosaurus a typo, or was there a problem with "Giganotosaurus?"

The root word we’re playing with is “gigantic”.

Fantasy Genre Critique

Gigantosaurus is a pretty insulting card to the fantasy genre. Dinosaurs have always been in the realm of science fiction (King Kong, Jurassic park, any property where a time machine is used,etc..), and to see one stomping on a dragon, the most known fantasy creature, tells me that the game is straying further from fantasy into science fiction. Also, looking at its most similar card, Khalid hydra begs the question, why was it not a hydra? Are hydras not greens iconic?

You need to read more fantasy if you think Dinosaurs never show up in fantasy.
