The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth

Ubiquitous Tokens Expectation

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by gcu-sovereign 4 Comments

Is the Ubiquitous Token of a plane something we should expect from visit to visit? Like, how Capenna has its gw citizens, Innistrad has black decayed zombies, LTR had orc armies [applicable to some silmarillion-based visit, I guess]I was looking at the Fish tokens in Bloomburrow and Mercenaries in otj and wondering if those were also more Worldbuilding statements or not.

It’s a mechanical tool that adds flavor, and something we definitely use when shaping a set.

State of Design Article Content

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by taymonbeal 11 Comments

Will this year's State of Design article include The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth since it came out too late to be in last year's article?

Yes, I forgot. It will be included.

Top Sellers Metrics

Would LTR and MH2 still be the top sellers if you went by packs bought rather than dollars spent?

I believe so.

Measuring Set Sales

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by thasgar 25 Comments

When measuring the best selling sets, is it measured by money customers spent, or number of packs sold? When LTR and MH2 are higher price point sets than anything in Standard, I gotta know

Money spent.

Set Poll Analysis

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by seththemusical 34 Comments

Hey Mark, I was looking at the results of your set polls and thought I'd point out some things. LTR has the highest median rating (8) and the highest mode (winning) rating (9), but also the most 1 votes by far, giving it a middle of the pack mean rating (6.834). LCI was the only set without a secondary peak at 1 slightly beats out WOE to have the highest mean rating (7.164). Means may be slightly off as I wasn't sure how to get vote totals and used the percentages.

Bilbo's Color Identity

New 05 Dec 2023 Asked by mournfulodysseus 28 Comments

Hi Mark! I was a big fan of having multiple cards representing the same character in LTR, showing how they'd developed. I do think the commander decks spoiled this appreciation however, since some of the legends felt shoe-horned into certain colours to fit the decks. Perhaps the most egregious was Bilbo, Birthday Celebrant, who's essentially the same character as Bilbo, Retired Burglar but the complete opposite colours. Just passing on this absolutely minor and essentially insignificant quibble.

It has been noted by other people.

Typecycling Status Query

New 11 Nov 2023 Asked by dapatman-blog 50 Comments

I noticed there were a few cards in LCI with typecycling, with the type in question on all of them being a basic land type. This was also the case in MOM and LTR. Is typecycling (at least for basic land types) deciduous now?

Basic land type cycling is deciduous.

Doctor Who Color Balance

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 49 Comments

Re: Color Imbalance in Doctor Who - Each set of UB commander decks has had a different color balance. 40K had thee black decks including a mono-black deck, with only one white and one green. LTR had a closer balance with 2-3 of each color. WHO has four blue decks but only one is black. Interestingly, all three have had a Blue-Black-Red deck, which seems to be a go-to for the most villainous deck.

Legendary Land Discussion

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by natew000 29 Comments

The recent legendary land discussion reminded me: LTR has 7 legendary lands that don’t have any built in mitigation. Is there a lower bar to clear for legendary lands to be released directly to Modern, as opposed to being released in a Standard set?

No. We’re still finding our feet in Universes Beyond.

Draft Archetype Balance

New 16 Sep 2023 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 49 Comments

Hi Mark, I want to register my disappointment that it seems like whenever there's an unusual/unique draft archetype in recent sets, it's almost always severely underpowered. UW tap in WOE, UG scry in LTR, and UG transform in MOM are the three most recent sets and all follow this pattern. Moving back a little further, the RW Lorehold graveyard theme in STX and RG werewolves in MID are also good examples. Can you pass along that limited players would like to see weird themes pushed a little more?

When you’re working with something you’re unfamilar with, it’s a lot riskier to push power levels, because you have no idea exactly what power level you’re at. With themes we’re familiar with we have a better ability to pinpoint where we think they’ll end up. As we repeat themes, it becomes easier to push them appropriately.

Amass Color Variants

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by watdattho 29 Comments

Re: Amass. In the future could color get the same treatment as creature types did in LTR to let you make armies that are different colors as well as different creature types? E.g. Amass red Goblins. Amass blue Merfolk.

That’s not how we currently do Amass, but who knows?

Future Clue Focus

New 24 Aug 2023 Asked by j-waffles 29 Comments

How likely are we to see a premiere set that has a focus on clues to the same degree that LTR or WOE have on food?

Somewhat likely.

Mechanic Overlap Strategy

New 14 Aug 2023 Asked by jimreviewsthickshakes-blog 46 Comments

Did R&D ever discuss having food as a major mechanic back to back in LTR and Wilds of Wldraine being a potential issue?

No. In fact, I’m trying to have us overlap mechanics more.

Power Level Inquiry

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by poiu314 18 Comments

In terms of power level, would you say MH3 is closer to LTR, or to previous MH sets? (please please please say LTR)

Power level is not my forte.

Most Successful Sets

New 04 Aug 2023 Asked by trifas 77 Comments

Recent information revealed MH1 and LTR are the most succesful sets of all time. What would be the most successful Premiere Set?

I believe it’s Strixhaven followed by Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, but I haven’t seen the data in a while. Note that counts all affiliated products.

Set Boosters Feedback

New 10 Jul 2023 Asked by estufe 64 Comments

Hi Mark, I hope you’re having a great day. Feedback for you to pass along: my non-enfranchised friend bought a box of LTR set boosters for us to play sealed, costing him extra and hurting our game night experience. My LGS only offers set boosters, which are worthless to me, as FNM prizes. I don’t know how to fix it, but booster products not for limited play, as they exist today, are meaningfully harming my experience and driving me away from the game.

It’s a note we’ve been hearing from the limited players. It’s an issue we’re working on.

Player Set Influence

New 06 Jul 2023 Asked by kaishi101 115 Comments

Hello, Mark. I really love UB sets; LTR has been my favorite set since I took up MTG again in January. Is there any way we players could have input as to what sets we'd want to see in the future?

Tell me in this thread.

Double Pips Podcast Idea

New 03 Jul 2023 Asked by ginkasai 29 Comments

Do you think you could you could do a podcast on when and why commons get double pips? For example, in LTR there are only two double pipped commons, Lorien Revealed and Claim the Precious. As a custom designer, its a concept that stumps me, I don't know when to use them.

We mostly don’t use them at common on cards with a mana value of there or less, with the one exception of hard counters. EDIT: A hard creature kill spells.

Amass Mechanic Expansion

New 03 Jul 2023 Asked by rottinghellkite 33 Comments

As of WAR and LTR we’ve only seen amass in Blue, Black, and Red. Could we see amass in Green or White given the right circumstances?

Sure. The Army counter would still be black.

Art Direction Note

New 19 Jun 2023 Asked by timelyintervention 39 Comments

Loving LTR so far.Between the designs and the flavor, you really knocked it out of the park. The only issue I have is with the full art map basic lands. They're too similar. When I fan them out quickly they all look green. I think the art direction needed to emphasize something to bring out the color more.

I can pass that note along to the correct team.
