Commander 2020 Possibilities

New 17 Jan 2020 Asked by matheusmagic07-blog 43 Comments

Maro, in 2017 came in Commander: jund, esper and bant, in 2018 came: sultai, naya and jeskai, what is the chance in ikoria's commander 2020 to come: abzan, grixis, mardu and temur?

There’s a chance.

Faction Focus Shift

New 15 Sep 2019 Asked by ceta-maelstrom 43 Comments

This is being asked with a bit of bias, but could factions shift focus on return to worlds? Temur is my favorite color combination, but I wasnt a fan of Temurs power matters mechanics, and would love to see a more druid/shaman/elementalist side to them. Azorious shifted from flying matters, to control between the first two ravnica, but that always felt more like an environmental problem rather than a faction shift.

Factions can mechanically shift some as long as they stay true to the larger feel of the faction.

Pop Culture Sightings

New 08 Sep 2019 Asked by johnjanuarius 39 Comments

Pop Culture Sighting! In Deadpool #28 (the 2015 series) there's a panel of Domino and Slapstick playing what appears to be Magic. Looks like Slapstick is playing Temur and Domino is playing Selesnya.

Cool. Thanks for the update.

Energy Mechanic Critique

New 03 Sep 2019 Asked by jhoald 56 Comments

I really hope we can return to Kaladesh without Energy. The setting of Kaladesh was really cool, but Energy is one of the worst mechanics made in the last ten years. Oppressive and unable to be interacted with, Energy was directly responsible for the worst Standard format since Mirrodin when you account for # of bans needed to fix it or # of viable tier 1 decks (the answer was 2: temur energy or Mardu Vehicles). Please don't tie a cool location to a failed mechanic.

With proper play design and some ways to interact with it, I have confidence we could make energy fun. Note that it was the most popular mechanic in Kaladesh by a wide margin. Don’t confuse the power level of the execution with the mechanic itself.

Tarkir and Alara Returns

New 27 Aug 2019 Asked by teamchaos 51 Comments

I was reading your past State of Designs and I felt really bad about the closure of Tarkir Block. I loved the Shards and the Khans more than I love the guilds (which is a heck of a lot tbh). And both Alara and Tarkir were so changed, I have the feeling we will never be able to visit them again. How do you feel about that? Is there any hope for Esper, Jund, Jeskai, Temur, Naya, Abzan, Bant, Grixis, Mardu or Sultai to become real again? As are the guilds?

If you reread the whole Tarkir story, not all knowledge of the clans has died off.

Future Dinosaur Colors

New 18 Aug 2019 Asked by wing-envy 32 Comments

Since it seems more likely we'll get dinosaurs on a new plane than return to Ixalan in the near future. How likely are they to lean towards Naya? You're Ixalan design podcast said you were originally leaning towards red/blue/green, but it just didn't work with the Ixalan tribal color balance. Is leaning towards their previous colors a consideration to help those who already have dino decks, or are you more likely to lean towards their more natural fit?

I don’t expect us making a lot of white Dinisaurs off of Ixakan.

Commander Set Balancing

New 02 Aug 2019 Asked by greensunzenith 71 Comments

Starting from the time Commander sets weren't cycles anymore, we got... C17: WUBRG, Selesnya, Grixis and Mardu; C18: Izzet, Bant, Esper and Jund; C19: Rakdos, Naya, Jeskai and Sultai. Seems balanced to me! All that's missing in the three-colors is Abzan and Temur to complete the mega-cycle. (And speaking of mega-cycles, I can't wait to see what the green Magus will be!)

It’s sometimes hard to see the forest for the trees.

Sarkhan's Colorful Journey

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by arjaysking-deactivated20200207 23 Comments

A similar question regarding Sarkhan as I've seen frequently asked about Tamiyo: Will we see Sarkhan with Temur colors again? I know he's base red but it was surprising to see him with three colors as it was with Tamiyo. Or will we see him at all again ... is his story over?

Sarkhan’s been through a lot of changes as a character and is the planeswalker with the most unique color combinations. All I can promise is he’ll (most likely) always be red.

Character growth. : )

Temur Characters Outdoors

New 14 Apr 2019 Asked by melon-man 57 Comments

Do you know of any temur-aligned characters outside of magic? It's my favorite color combination but I cant think of any myself.

If you count Hulk & Bruce Banner as one singular character, they’re blue/red/green.

Lion King Mix-up

New 07 Apr 2019 Asked by zwomally 44 Comments

Another memorable slip from Drive to Work. You were comparing something to Timone and Pumba from the Lion King and said Temur and Pumba around the time you were working on KTK, but before it was announced.

Yep.

Planeswalkers Colour Shift

New 01 Apr 2019 Asked by albus7 87 Comments

I just want to say I'm a bit disappointed that some Planeswalkers won't be featured in all their colours. Unless it *is* actually for story reasons, Nissa not being GU and Sarkhan not being Temur feels like it undoes a lot of their character development.

Gameplay needs trump story needs. Also, if you’re multiple colors, that doesn’t mean at a certain moment in time you can’t lean towards certain colors. We made sure everyone was at least in their core color.

Rick Sanchez Colors

New 16 Feb 2019 Asked by ezio-ibn-la-la-la-the-1st 39 Comments

Isn't Rick Sanchez more Temur than Grixis? He seems to have a very Green like fatalistic additude.

You can’t see the black in Rick?

Temur Mechanics Feedback

New 10 Jan 2019 Asked by cardz5000 39 Comments

Both Temur's (and later Clan Atarka's) mechanics rated poorly, do you think this was a problem with the creative and/or mechanical direction of the faction(s) as a whole, or just those mechanics specifically?

History has shown us “power matters” mechanics never score particularly high in market research. We still make them from time to time because they can play well, but we know they aren’t splashy.

Chances of Ascendancy Cards

New 06 Jan 2019 Asked by smuglookingbarrel6 33 Comments

Is there any chance we see Azorius, Rakdos, Orzhov, and Gruul ascendancy cards? It feels weird to just have simic ascendancy after the last set with them had one for each faction (Jeskai, Mardu, Abzan, Sultai, Temur ascendancy)

The fact that it’s one card leads me to believe it’s just the use of the word and not meant as a hint at a new cycle.

Wedges Mana Cost Order

New 06 Dec 2018 Asked by glintfang-nezumi 27 Comments

About the khans mana cost ordering- does this mean wedges will always focus on that one color now? So abzan colors always focus on white, while temur colors always focus on green?

No, we just want to have a consistent mana order for costs and we’ve settled on this for wedges.

Hellkite Overlord Trivia

New 26 Nov 2018 Asked by mister-nemesis 46 Comments

I think you missed my question earlier, so I’ll try again. For my birthday, could you provide trivia about Hellkite Overlord, the first card I ever fell in love with? If that’s too specific, trivia about the combination of RUG would be great too. Thanks!

The three keywords were chosen because they were overlap of abilities in the colors. Black and red (on Dragons) get flying, red and green get trample, and black, red and green all get haste.
Happy Birthday!

Historic in Dominaria

New 26 Sep 2018 Asked by skaydeschoolboy 51 Comments

So Dominaria introduced the Historic batch. White and Blue were the main colors that cared the most about that batch. But isn't Green the color that talks about keeping in touch with your past? I mean the first nominal historian in the whole series, Reki is mono-green! Temur & the Abzan also have that whole thing about keeping in touch with your ancestors through the Widewhisper/Kin-Trees

A set has to balance its color among its mechanics. Green was more connected to Kicker in Dominaria. In a different set, green could easily be more associated with historic.

Naya Mechanics Reflection

New 25 Sep 2018 Asked by rumblez99 74 Comments

Hey MaRo, today's my birthday. Can I get either some traits or some trivia about the Naya (especially green)? Thanks!

One of the biggest mistakes in Shards of Alana was us not keywording/ability wording Naya’s 5-power matters mechanic. Also, as Temur shows, 4-power was the better cut-off. Happy Birthday!

Temur Wedge Identity

New 01 Sep 2018 Asked by gynoidpoet 22 Comments

I've been so busy with my Birthday Celebrations this week that I forgot to ask my Birthday Question! Which is: can you think of a possible thematic/mechanical identity for the Temur Wedge that hasn't been done so far?

I can think of numerous. : )
