Legitimacy of Unconditioned Ramp

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by zorroaburrito 24 Comments

Piggybacking off the recent question about Sun Titan effects, Is W allowed to ramp without a condition (like being behind)? How do you feel about Restoration of Eiganjo, colorpie-wise?

An issue we’re figuring out.

White's Graveyard Return Capability

New 11 Jun 2024 Asked by sjk9000 16 Comments

White is able to return little things from your graveyard to your hand/the battlefield. There are a dozen or so cards (Sun Titan, Court of Ardenvale, Redemption Choir, etc.) that let you return any permanent of N or less MV, and a bunch more that specify creature/artifact/enchantment.My question is, how much of bend/break is it for White to potentially return lands from the graveyard? Is it something you'd rather avoid all together, and cards like Sun Titan et al. are a mistake? Is it permissable at certain costs/requirements? I imagine when you're paying 5+ mana you probably don't want to target a land even if you could. Could a card that just straight up let you play lands from the graveyard be printed in white?

We let white do it when in a large bunch where it is unlikely the thing you will get. It can’t do it where we specifically name land.

Enchanting and Surgeon General Commander

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by lil-cheez 29 Comments

Hi Mark, I don't know it this classifies as an "Un-question" but here we go. Surgeon General Commander makes you draw a card everytime you enchant a creature, what to my understanding is to play an aura paying its cost and targeting; but let's say the aura enters the battlefield not by casting, via Sun Titan or Illuna for example; does Surgeon care for that?

Surgeon Commander just cares that it gets enchanted. It cares not how it got enchanted. So, those still trigger the ability.

White's Land Recurring Factor

New 12 Jul 2021 Asked by venning 33 Comments

For what it's worth, White has been able to recur lands from the graveyard before. Sun Titan is a classic example. Most recently, Shepherd of the Cosmos from Kaldheim can recur lands directly onto the battlefield. This was relevant in KHM Limited with the uncommon sacrifice lands. Have a great day, Mark!

Just because we’ve done something, doesn’t mean we’re supposed to.

Understanding White's Color Pie

New 04 Apr 2021 Asked by gbknight 26 Comments

White has had Planar Birth, and things such as Sun Titan and Faith's Reward can also reanimate lands. Is that no longer in White's color pie, or were the interactions with Sun Titan, etc unintentional?

My list were the primary colors at the task.

White Reanimation Trait

New 05 Jan 2020 Asked by dalenthas 56 Comments

Is Sun Titan still in White's part of the color pie? If so, may I request more cards like it that can repeatedly reanimate small things? That seems like a good source of card advantage for white that isn't just drawing cards.

It is something white can do.

Color Pie Bends

New 06 Dec 2018 Asked by petruscaex 34 Comments

So both cards I mentioned before (Emeria's Shepherd, Profound Journey), along with Sun Titan, would be considered bends or breaks for White nowadays? I'm curious if there was a significant change on the Color Pie after Dragons of Tarkir. Was it... Sarkhan's fault?

They are bends now and were bends when they were made. Sarkhan changed nothing (color-pie-wise). : )

Sun Titan Within White

New 08 Feb 2017 Asked by sweatypizzasong-blog 26 Comments

"White can get artifacts, enchantments and cheap creatures from the graveyard back to the hand." Does that mean that Sun Titan isn't supposed to be in White's color pie?

Sun Titan can put cheap artifacts, creatures and enchantments onto the battlefield from the graveyard. It shouldn’t be getting lands and cheap planeswalkers.

Reveillark Design Shift

New 02 Jan 2016 Asked by vercingex 32 Comments

Hi Mark! It's my birthday today, and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on one of my three favorite cards; Sun Titan, Reveillark, or Soul Sculptor?

When I designed Reveillark, it returned creatures with converted mana cost two or less and development changed it to power. One of many examples, where development made a design significantly more powerful. : ) Happy Birthday!

Auras Mechanics

New 31 Dec 2013 Asked by sheth 19 Comments

Do you consider auras only being targeted on cast a bug? A new player was baffled that I could use sun titan to place a pariah on *his* hexproof fleecemane lion.

I wish we could find a way to get “target” onto auras.

Duel Deck Packaging Issue

New 16 Sep 2013 Asked by papercutfromtheinside 10 Comments

Hey mark! What happens/what do I do if my Duel Deck's packaging is off? I picked up a duel deck today and it had somberwald vigilante visible and then the other spot had sun titan where polukranos should have been. Package is sealed.

I would contact our Game Support (aka Customer Service). Go to wizards.custhelp.com.

Sun Titan Preview

Is sub Titan just in the heroes vs monsters or is it a THS preview as well

The Sun Titan is not one of the six Theros previews in Duel Decks: Heroes vs. Monsters.

Event Prize Dilemmas

New 28 Apr 2013 Asked by inner-believer-student 15 Comments

Based on your answer about the Foil Plains, it sounds like you guys got the wrong message about why people were upset about the Helvault. It's not that people cared that expensive cards were handed out, I loved getting Wurmcoil Engine and Sun Titan and the GameDay BSZ. It was that not EVERYONE got the premium helvaults. I had no chance of getting a foil Griselbrand token because I didn't live somehwere, and people who this is their first magic event had a shot.

It’s not just one event, it was many events. If we give away something that’s too desirable, we get complaints that there was a reason someone couldn’t attend and they missed out on this “one time thing”.  The feedback has been “make it relevant, something I can put in my deck, but not so good that I get real upset if I’m unable to attend”. We try very hard as a company to listen to our playerbase and, like it or not, that is the message that has been conveyed very clearly over time.

Reanimating Planeswalkers

New 14 Aug 2012 Asked by stackweaver 13 Comments

Excluding Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and Sun Titan there are no cards that reanimate planeswalkers(as far as I know). Every other permanent type can be reanimated with effects ranging from Argivian Restoration and Replenish to Crucible of Worlds(and obviously Reanimate itself). I am wondering if a card that says "return target planeswalker card in your graveyard to the battlefield" could ever be printed. I mean ultimately is it really that much more broken than turn three Karn Liberated in Modern?

Why don’t planeswalkers have cards that let us avoid mana costs like every other permanent? Um, because we’ve gotten smarter.
