Stuffy Doll Callback Trivia

Birthday Trivia Time! Can you give me trivia on Stuffy Doll, my favorite Time Spiral callback?

Stuffy Doll first appeared on Black Vise illustrated by Richard Thomas. The character got noticed by the audience, enough so that Richard Thomas included him in other illustrations. Then, during Time Spiral, we decided to make a card out of him. We spent a lot of time figuring out the right mechanic for him and ended up with him being very hard to kill. I have Stuffy Vise doll at my desk. I don’t remember where I got it from. Happy Birthday!

Killer Cosplay and Banned Cards

New 01 Dec 2021 Asked by badatcommander 32 Comments

How does Killer Cosplay work with banned cards? In a game of Un-Commander can I dress Stuffy Doll up as Golos, or animate a Sultai Ascendancy and dress it up as Leovold?

As long as it is an official Magic card that’s a creature, Killer Cosplay can copy it, provided another creature exists with the same mana cost. Remember the card is acorn, so it’s only in decks in most formats where everyone is on board with it being used.

Stuffy Doll Art

New 06 Oct 2015 Asked by island-delver-go 40 Comments

Stuffy doll has been the star of many card arts including the rack, black vise, and wall of wonder. Is there any particular reason it was featured so commonly?

Richard Thomas was an artist who liked the Stuffy Doll and put in my of his paintings.

Was Stuffy Doll considered for a reprint in Innistrad? The flavor seems spot-on for the "creepy doll" trope.

We already had Creepy Doll.

I forgot to ask a birthday trivia for my birthday a few weeks ago...but could I get some trivia for the first rare I pulled, Stuffy Doll?

Stuffy Doll was a character that first showed up on the card Black Vise in Alpha. Artist Richard Thomas liked the little guy so he kept using him in the art of other cards. Most of the time Stuffy Doll was in the process of being harmed.During Time Spiral, we finally made Stuffy Doll his own card.Happy Belated Birthday!

Avatar Card Trivia

New 24 Oct 2014 Asked by th58pz700u 27 Comments

Mark! My birthday was last Saturday and I've been asking everyday, please give me some birthday trivia on one of my favorite cards: Avatar or Woe, The Rack and Thoughtseize.

The Rack, in Antiquities, was made as a follow up to Black Vise, an artifact from Alpha. Instead of punishing a player for having too many cards in their hands, it punished them for having too few. It got played in a lot of discard decks in the day. The creature pictured in it, referred to affectionately as “Stuffy Doll”, first appeared in the art of Black Vise and was in The Rack as a joke that The Rack was a riff off of Black Vise. Happy Birthday!

Fblthp Following

New 16 Feb 2013 Asked by dontfucklewithshuckle-blog-blog 11 Comments

I am a huge fan of Fblthp, the homonculus depicted on the card Totally Lost. From reading some of the posts here and talking to people at my local game shop, it seems that fblthp has quite a following for a character used in a one-of flavor text joke. Have any other minor characters or cards gotten such a large following in the past?

Yes. Prodigal Sorcerer had quite a following early on. As did Stuffy Doll from Black Vise. There have always been fan favorites.

By chance did you have anything to do with Stuffy Doll? If not do you know who did?

Multiple members of the Time Spiral design team turned ones in. I was one of them but I don’t remember if my version is the one that got printed.

Stuffy Doll's Creation

Mark, who created Stuffy Doll? And I hope they received many kudos, candy bar or otherwise

It was made during Time Spiral design. I’ve always been a huge fan of Stuffy Doll so there’s a decent chance I was involved, but I honestly don’t remember.

Stuffy Doll Art

New 17 Jun 2012 Asked by dragonstout83-blog 10 Comments

RE your comment on Stuffy Doll's new art (and Lorwyn vs. Shadowmoor a little bit): it makes me sad that Wizards thinks low enough of the Magic audience that they believe we prefer things "...with ATTITUDE!", but it probably makes me a little sadder about the overall Magic audience that Wizards might be right. I'd also point out that the new art makes less sense: he does NOT look like a 0/1, and the "voodoo doll" part is also lost.

We like embracing nostalgia but we also have to try new things. I personally am a big fan of the new art for Stuffy Doll and I’ve heard from many others that agree.

Stuffy Doll Art Change

New 16 Jun 2012 Asked by ironshade 13 Comments

Why the new art on Stuffy Doll? Everyone's favorite sack-doll mascot (Black Vise, The Rack, Cursed Rack, Leshrac's Rite, etc...) was...well, everyone's favorite sack-doll mascot. Why replace him with non-sack-doll art in a core set? Especially when the core-set art almost never changes so that new players can easily recognize the cards?

Jeremy Jarvis thought we could do a Stuffy Doll with a little more attitude. I personally really like the new art.

Stuffy vs Creepy Doll

New 17 May 2012 Asked by vegan-for-life-deactivated20130 9 Comments

Why didn't you just reprint Stuffy Doll in Innistrad?

Because Creepy Doll is a horror archtype and Stuffy Doll is not. (Also Jonathan Coulton never wrote a song called “Stuffy Doll”.)
