Merfolk of the Pearl Trident

Merfolk Tribe Trivia

New 30 Dec 2021 Asked by firtleturtle 30 Comments

Hello Mark! Today is my birthday, I was wondering if I could get any trivia about merfolk, my favorite tribe. Thank you!

For the first full year of Magic, the only Merfolk was a vanilla 1/1, Merfolk of the Pearl Trident. (Lord of Atlantis wouldn’t be changed to a Merfolk for many years.) It wasn’t until Fallen Empires, that the game had enough Merfolk to even make a Merfolk deck. For more on the history of Merfolk, here’s my article from Merfolk Week all the way back in 2008: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/merfolks-tale-2008-06-23Happy Birthday!

Could I get some merfolk trivia for my birthday?

The first Merfolk lord (Lord of Atlantis, in Alpha) boosted only one creature (Merfolk of the Pearl Trident). Happy Birthday!

Has someone figured it out? It’s a large number. ___________ counts as zero words.

I'm currently out for my girlfriend's birthday (and asking Tumblr questions about Magic, such an exciting life I lead), could I get some trivia about Merfolk for her?

The very first merfolk deck had a lord (The Lord of Atlantis) and one merfolk (the Merfolk of the Pearl Trident). The second merfolk wouldn’t show up for four more expansions (Merfolk Assassin in The Dark).

Creature Strength Logic

can you explain why a sanctuary cat is physically stronger than a merfolk of the pearl trident?

Apparently you’ve never been in a backstreet brawl with one.

Merfolk Keitel Comparison

New 28 Jul 2013 Asked by chainsofmephistopheles 8 Comments

In The Duelist #3, you claimed that Merfolk of the Pearl Trident looks like Harvey Keitel. This has been bothering me for 19 years. I just can't see the resemblance. Was that bit of lore something you overheard someone else claim? Was it based on a specific Keitel role? In honor of Magic's 20th anniversary, I need an answer to this question that has bothered me almost since the beginning.

I’ve always thought he does but that’s just my opinion. I do not believe the artist was in any way trying to draw Harvey Keitel.

Merfolk Anatomy Humor

With all the new Merfolk with legs (including Master of the Pearl Trident), how come Merfolk of the Pearl Trident from M13 didn't get a new art with legs?

I’d try to make an argument, but I’m not sure I have a leg to stand on. : )

Vanilla Creatures Explained

Trying to wrap my head around vanilla creatures. Could you give one or two examples? Thanks!!

A Vanilla creature is a creature with no rules text. Vanilla creatures in Magic 2013: Canyon Minotaur (3/3) Centaur Courser (3/3) Fire Elemental (5/4) Kraken Hatchling (0/4) Merfolk of the Pearl Trident (1/1) Phyrexian Hulk (5/4) Pillarfield Ox (2/4) Silvercoat Lion (2/2) Walking Corpse (2/2) Zombie Goliath (4/3)

Merfolk Physiology

New 06 Jul 2012 Asked by gunsandrifles-blog 9 Comments

so are merfolk with legs standard now? all the merfolk in zendikar block had legs, and merfolk of the pearl trident is the only one without in M13 (and it's an older piece of art).

We’ve decided to give merfolk legs because Magic is a game about mostly land-based conflict.

Merfolk Confirmation

Did you just accidentally confirm Merfolk of the Pearl Trident for M13?

I like to think Master of the Pearl Trident did that.

Merfolk Lords Explanation

New 29 Jun 2012 Asked by necrogenesis 3 Comments

"Merfolk lords tend to cost two because it’s ramping with Merfolk of the Pearl Trident which by the way is not blue excelling at creatures." - I completely don't understand this answer. Can you also ignore every other goblin printed and pretend that Mons's Goblin Raiders is your baseline for that tribe?

There are a lot more goblins than merfolk. Master of the Pearl Trident in Magic 2013 is, much like in Alpha, trying to combo with the Merfolk of the Pearl Trident (the connection of name might give this away). It is designed to be the two-drop following the turn one Merfolk of the Pearl Trident.

Defining Weak Lords

New 29 Jun 2012 Asked by ili-92 2 Comments

If Master of the Pearl Trident is one of the weakest lords according to development, dare I ask what a "good" lord looks like? Also, from what I understand, most people who are upset with MotPT are upset with how efficient it is, not about its actual power level - since most other lords cost 3 CMC.

Merfolk lords tend to cost two because it’s ramping with Merfolk of the Pearl Trident which by the way is not blue excelling at creatures.

Nostalgic Merfolk Lover

New 27 Jun 2012 Asked by talinthas 9 Comments

As a guy who started playing with revised, whose first deck was blue, and who used merfolk of the pearl trident for eons, can i thank you and thank the team for creating Master of the Pearl Trident? There's a lot of hate for that card right now because of lack of viable merfolk, but it hit my nostalgia so hard i got tears in my eyes, and brought me right back to 1994 with my first packs, dreaming of a lord of atlantis deck. Thank you.

You’re welcome. As a fellow merfolk lover (yeah, you heard me Internet “merfolk lover”), I share your joy.
