Unrules: Wordmail Mechanics

New 28 Aug 2023 Asked by mattgmueller 34 Comments

Unrules Question, thank you Mark for answering these, for Wordmail, are hyphenated words one word or the individual words? For example, does Kellan, the Fae-Blooded get +4/+4; or Lurrus of the Dream-Den, +5/+5, so on so forth.

Hyphenated words are one word.

Does Surgeon Commander's crossed out name count as errata for R&D's Secret Lair? Wordmail would like to know.

It does not.

S.N.O.T. Word Count

New 09 Dec 2019 Asked by zackgriff 29 Comments

Un rules question: for the purpose of wordmail how many words are in S.N.O.T.s name? Is it an acronym for four words? Or just one word? What about if I have multiple S.N.O.T.s stuck together?

Acronyms are one word.

S.N.O.T Ruling

New 21 Jan 2018 Asked by norticpool-deactivated20210317 15 Comments

Un-ruling question, someone put wordmail on a S.N.O.T, so does the word mail count S.N.O.T as 4 words because its a Acronym or as one word?

One word.

Wordmail/Spykit Interaction

New 27 Jul 2017 Asked by originalskaiil 45 Comments

Regarding the Wordmail/Spykit comment, I believe that unless the creature is a token with some special words for its name, the 16,706 words we've counted up would include the creature's own name, so it would only be a 16,706/16,706 creature. If I'm understanding the interaction correctly.

Spy Kit Word Count

New 27 Jul 2017 Asked by mmoozzee 87 Comments

For the Spy Kit / Wordmail question, someone did the math up until Eldritch Moon and got 16,345 individual words. I just counted up AKH and HOU and got 401. Assuming I haven't missed anything, as of right now your enchanted creature would be 16,706+*/16,706+* where * is the number of words in it's own name.

Spy Kit Interactions

The Spy Kit question earlier got me thinking, if I put Wordmail on a creature equipped with Spy Kit, is it essentially an infinite/infinite?

It’s large although technically not infinite.

Spy Kit Interaction

As the official Rules Un-Manager, does wordmail work the way I think it does with Spy Kit? If so, do you happen to have a current total for the bonus?

It does work. I don’t currently have the total.

Silver Border Mechanics

New 26 Jan 2017 Asked by melonbomb 21 Comments

Un rules question: does R&D's Secret Lair's "Play all cards as written" make Foriegn language cards the foriegn language name? Does a German Übermyr with Wordmail get +1/+1 rather than +2/+2 like a Myr Superior would? Are there a to be had with Now I Know My ABC's?

In Silver Border, all cards are already whatever they are on a card by card basis. A foreign card is treated by the qualities of its native language. Silver border cares specifically about the exact card you’re playing: language, artist, rarity, all of it.

Spy Kit+Wordmail Combo

New 20 Aug 2016 Asked by lgosvse 28 Comments

Regarding the Spy Kit+Wordmail combo, would that give you access to ALL of the nonlegendary creature names in Magic, or just the English ones?

All the names you gain with Spy Kit have to come from the same language.

Silver-Border Calculation

New 18 Aug 2016 Asked by drendarmorevo 29 Comments

Silver-border ruling please, A Merfolk of the Pearl Trident enchanted with Wordmail is equipped with Spy Kit, what is it's new power and toughness? Also, given that _____ is not a word, does it or does it not count towards Wordmail?

Has someone figured it out? It’s a large number. ___________ counts as zero words.

Wordmail and Characters

New 07 Sep 2015 Asked by pepinismo 20 Comments

How about Wordmail on a creature which is in a language that doesn't use spaces, such as Japanese or Chinese? We count characters instead of words for translating or publishing purposes, but that's a lot more characters than English words in the creature's name.

You’ll have to make a local house rule as I do not understand the languages well enough to make a ruling.

Wordmail Language Rule

New 07 Sep 2015 Asked by metatroniuss-blog 12 Comments

Does wordmail on foreign cards grant a bonus for each word in it's printed language, or for each word in English?

It’s based on the language on the card. In silver border sets you always look at the characteristics of the specific card.

Wordmail Bonus Debate

New 15 Sep 2012 Asked by abnormalchicken-blog 1 Comments

A quick silver boarded rules question, what bonus does Wordmail grant B-I-N-G-O? We had a debate, and we came up with +1/+1, +3/+3, or +5/+5 (either as Bingo, B, I, O as words, or B, I, N, G, O)? Any clarification?

B-I-N-G-O is one word so Wordmail gives you +1/+1.

Wordmail Mechanics

New 28 Jun 2012 Asked by geddyleejura-blog 1 Comments

Hi Maro, I've been reading for a while but this is my first question. In Unhinged land, if I play 'Wordmail' on 'Goblin S.W.A.T. Team', can I count S.W.A.T. as four separate words? Does it help if I know the words that make up the acronym?

An acronym is still one word. Sorry.
