Living End Variants Request

New 14 Mar 2023 Asked by j-waffles 41 Comments

We’ve gotten living end, as well as scrap mastery, which was living end for artifacts. May I request living end variants for enchantments? Or planeswalkers?

I’m sure we’ll get there.

Understanding Richard Garfield PhD

New 06 Jul 2021 Asked by chocolatechipmarshmallowpizza 20 Comments

Re Richard Garfield PhD, Living End is a suspend spell without a mana cost (like Crashing Footfalls, Restore Balance and the like), so It think the question is "are cards without a mana cost interchangeable with Richard Garfield?" I suppose another way to phrase the question is could you play a swamp as a mountain?

No. For starters, neither is cast and Richard swaps a spell as you cast it.

Cascade and Living End Query

I have Richard Garfield PhD and cascade into a land, can I play the land as Living End?

No, mana cost and mana value are not the same thing.

Living End Trivia

New 11 Oct 2019 Asked by rafnstrafr-blog 27 Comments

Hey Mark - Birthday is today and was hoping for a little trivia on one of my favorite Magic cards: Living End. Thanks for all you do for this community!

Living End was part of a rare cycle of iconic spells from Magic’s past that could only be cast if suspended. Living End was referencing Living Death from Tempest (the card was designed by Mike Elliott).Happy Birthday!

Mana Cost Clarification

New 27 Jun 2017 Asked by bringbacktheoldslivers-deactiva 51 Comments

You said "No, you cannot. A zero mana cost and no mana cost are not the same thing.", but according to the rules I don't think that's accurate. When looking at the gatherer for Tolaria West, it says "Cards with mana cost 0 (like Pact of Negation) and cards with no mana cost (like Living End and every land) have converted mana cost 0.". I think using Richard Garfield allows you to use a land as a vision then.

Having a converted mana cost of 0 is not the same as having a mana cost of 0. Richard Garfield PhD requires cards to have a cost on both ends (what it is and what you turn it into). Lands, and Evermind, do not have a cost and thus cannot interact with Richard Garfield PhD.

Beast Within Opinion

New 03 Jun 2017 Asked by macgyvercas-deactivated20171221 25 Comments

Beast Within! It's Vindicate, but better! Because I run it in Living End. In case you couldn't tell, I'm firmly in Camp Yes To Beast Within.

I’m fine with the effect. It’s just not monogreen.

Cycling Cards Concern

New 23 Apr 2017 Asked by spiritkhan 38 Comments

How did design/development make cycling cards while aware of the living end modern deck?

We don’t hold the present hostage of the past. If new cards break decks in larger order formats, we’ll ban cards in the format if necessary.

Living End Deck Rules

New 16 Feb 2015 Asked by themetamoonbase 47 Comments

Maybe this is a question for the rules manager, but the Living End deck's existence seems to be an error in the rules. (The deck functions by cascading into the Living End card). Living End doesn't have a CMC, because by default you must suspend it. Why does CMC of = 0? It seems to me that 3 is not greater than , because is not a CMC. Couldn't the rules be changed to say that != 0? This would make far more mathematical sense.

While it does not have a mana cost, it does have a converted mana cost which is 0. Note that all cards have a converted mana cost.

Morph Card Consideration

New 16 Jan 2015 Asked by calliestumbler 21 Comments

Was there any consideration to have morph cards with no casting cost that could only be cast with morph and turned face up (similar to living end and ancestral visions)?

That’s not particularly interesting design space. We’ve already made cards with a very high casting cost (I’m looking at you Scornful Egotist) which basically does this the vast majority of the time and doesn’t cause the confusion that having no mana cost would create.

Living Cards Functionality

New 28 Jul 2014 Asked by koscookemonstr 22 Comments

While reading the spoilers for FTV annihilation, I finally took the time to read Living Death, why was Living Death and Living End printed to do the same thing with different ways to cast them?

Living End was a suspend version of Living Death.

Suspending Lands Query

New 15 Feb 2014 Asked by voxpvoxd-deactivated20140302 9 Comments

With Richard Garfield, Ph.D. in play, could you suspend an Island as if it were Ancestral Vision or Living End? (Technically, suspending a card isn't casting it...)

No, you can’t.

Reserved List Comparison

New 02 Nov 2013 Asked by themastah 5 Comments

So wait, RE: reserved list, how is Living End not too close to All Hallow's Eve?

Living End is Living Death (from Tempest) with suspend. The difference is All Hallow’s Eve doesn’t kill the creatures in play.

Un-rules Clarification

New 04 Aug 2013 Asked by latentlactose 6 Comments

Un-rules question: For the purposes of Richard Garfield, zero CMC is not the same as no CMC (like on, say, Living End), correct? I cannot play a Memnite and turn it into Restore Balance, right?

That is correct - no mana cost is not the same as a mana cost of 0.

Card Signing Request

New 30 Jul 2013 Asked by dontcryjoelethergo-blog 6 Comments

Hey there! I have been with you folks since Zendikar (BTW BEST SET EVER!!!) and wanted to thank you all for the fun times I have been having. My question: I view myself as a bit more of a casual player just getting into modern competitive and was wondering if you had any major hand in developing any cards in the Living End deck? If so could I somehow send you those cards and get your lovely signature?

You’d have to give me a deck list as I don’t know it.

MMA Card Selection

New 21 Jun 2013 Asked by calintares 4 Comments

Why wasn't Living End in MMA? It's a cornerstone of a popular deck, and a good card in and of itself.

Modern Masters had all sorts of parameters (more so than the average set) which meant that everything couldn’t be in it. Having not worked on either the design or development I do not know the specifics on this particular card.
