Less Flying Mechanics

New 06 Feb 2020 Asked by jjustin1379 49 Comments

Can we ever see a set where flying is used less and another mechanic is used more ibstead?

Go play Ice Age or Falken Empires limited. Not having a lot of flying creatures makes for a sloggy limited format.

Prerelease Trivia

New 19 Jan 2020 Asked by nadojo1 67 Comments

Since it is my birthday and a prerelease weekend, could I get birthday trivia about prereleases?

The first set to have a prerelease was Ice Age. It had one and it was held at a comics convention in Toronto. The event was won by Dave Humpherys. I played in the event to write an article for The Duelist about the experience. I made the cut to Top 32 (aka Day Two) but had to drop out as Wizards had paid for my trip and didn’t want me to win it. It was the only major tournament I’m aware of that was played with ante.Happy Birthday!

Pronouncing Jaya

New 22 Dec 2019 Asked by gigaseifer 38 Comments

Officially, how is Jaya's name pronounced? In the Ice Age novels it was with a soft J or a y-sound, and the Japanese printings of her cards use "Ya-ya." Yet, I only ever hear people use Ja-ya?

At Wizards we use a hard J.

Printing Versus Birth

New 25 Nov 2019 Asked by unbnoru-blog 31 Comments

How early before release are sets usually printed? Asking because I'd like to know if my Ice Age cards, release in June 1995, are older than me (I was born in May 1995).

If they were the first print run, they are probably older than you.

Richard Garfield References

New 14 Oct 2019 Asked by rockmanzero 35 Comments

Aside from Richard Garfield, Ph.D. in Unhinged and Jester's Cap in Ice Age, have there been any other allusions to Richard Garfield in the artwork of magic cards?

No. And Jester’s Cap isn’t Richard.

Mana Symbol Trivia

New 29 Jul 2019 Asked by eachdayaholiday 49 Comments

Hey Mark it’s my birthday! Could I get some trivia on white mana, lifegain, warriors, or something completely random? Thank you and thank you for all you do!

The white mana symbol is the only one to have a significant change since Alpha. It happened for Ice Age. In fact, there’s a white card that had a preview version with the old symbol while the card in the set had the new symbol.Happy Birthday!

Snowmen Classification

New 28 Jul 2019 Asked by mrpopogod 44 Comments

"If Magic were to have animate snowmen, would they be Elementals or Golems?" - Ice Age clearly demonstrated they were Goblins. Or is this another one of those "old Magic does not set precedent" things?

That is not a precedent. : )

Logo Design Policy

New 19 Jul 2019 Asked by ultwarrior 61 Comments

"All set logos now use the Beleron font." -- Could they ... not? Magic has had some beautiful and evocative logos in the past; Mirage, Ice Age, Scourge, Nemesis and Time Spiral all immediately jump to mind as memorable, and although Beleren has the benefit of familiarity, can we not keep it for placeholders, taglines, that sort of thing, and still see distinct and different logos in future?

Things can change, but the current policy is having all the logos in Beleren. It helps give Magic a more consistent look and feel.

Impulsive Draw Origin

New 11 Jul 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 41 Comments

You call it impulsive draw, but its actually an old ability from Ice Age. The artifact Elkin Bottle was the first use ofvthat ability. So shouldn't it be called Elkin draw?

Not everything is named after the first Magic card to do it.

Permanent Text Alteration Cards

New 15 Jun 2019 Asked by funbun85-blog 24 Comments

Magical Hack has been around since Alpha, while Sleight of Mind saw the light of day in Ice Age. Over the years more of these 'alteration' cards have been printed, yet they are all Instants or Sorceries (not counting Balduvian Shaman). Will we ever see an actual (Legendary?) wizard creature with those abilities?

We don’t do a lot of permanent text changing these days.

Snow Mechanic Excitement

New 23 May 2019 Asked by thesilvernoble 47 Comments

Hi Mark, the first booster packs I ever opened were Ice Age packs, and I'm super excited to see the snow mechanic return. As well as many other cards in Modern Horizons. Thank you.

You’re welcome. And thanks for playing so many years.

Set's Timeline Placement

New 23 May 2019 Asked by jspencer93 33 Comments

Does this set have a distinct placement in the timeline? So far it looks to be almost entirely between The Brothers War and Ice Age.

It’s not set at one particular time.

Trivia on Hot Soup

New 03 Apr 2019 Asked by cannonspectacle 46 Comments

Today is my birthday! As per tradition, I'd like to ask for any trivia you might have about the card Hot Soup, or any of guest-designed cards in M15. Thanks!

Hot Soup was designed by game designer James Ernest. He used to work at Wizards back in the day, and actually illustrated a Magic card - Reality Twist (from Ice Age).Happy Birthday!

Anticipation for Set

New 29 Mar 2019 Asked by adventmtg 44 Comments

Not really a question, but I've been playing since Ice Age, paying attention to the story since Mirrodin, and this is the most hyped I've been for a set in all that time. I love the idea that it will focus on a story, and this is already giving me Avengers-style vibes of a a big bad that has built up for years finally making his move. Cannot wait for spoilers to start!

I can’t wait for you all to see it.

Ice Age Set Insights

New 24 Mar 2019 Asked by confetta01 45 Comments

Hey Mark, today's my birthday. I've been playing Magic off and on since Unlimited. My favorite set of all time was Ice Age. For my birthday, can you tell me anything more about the set? As a follow up ask, if I may, any chance of ever revisiting that time period or those themes?

Ice Age was before my time, but here we go. I believe Ice Age was the first expansion ever worked on and originally was slated to be the first expansion. Note that the original plan was there wasn’t need for an expansion for at least a year or two as that’s how most games do it.Happy Birthday!

Snow Basics Complexity

New 11 Feb 2019 Asked by mtgplayer 36 Comments

Hi Mark. I love that R&D is making the game simpler. The new products helped a lot getting my friends into the game. But, please, consider this: I was 11 y.o. when I started playing and Ice Age was just released. I fell in love with Snow Basics and bought many starter decks just to have those. They were pretty simple to understand, even as a kid. So, if we ever visit a Norse Plane, please give us players a little love and consider printing Snow Basics, even if not tied to any mechanic. :-)

Snow lands are neither as simple to comprehend nor as easy to integrate as you believe. As someone who judged a lot during Ice Age and was on the design team for Coldsnap, snow is not as clean as your memory might lead you to believe.

Snow Supertype Future

New 30 Jan 2019 Asked by midwestmtgjudge 35 Comments

Thank you for the TftP today! With the Midwest in the grips of a polar vortex again, I have Coldsnap and Ice Age on my mind. Is there any chance that the Snow supertype will ever see Standard again? Or does it have too much rules baggage that would cause it to not return?

I think snow has a better chance of returning in a supplemental set than a Standard-legal one.

Marquee Cards Examples

New 13 Jan 2019 Asked by ticked-off-squirrel 25 Comments

What are some examples of marquee cards?

Jester’s Cap (Ice Age) and Grinning Totem (Mirage). Mindslaver was supposed to be the Marquee card of Tempest. It was what Volrath’s Helm was supposed to do.

Early Magic Color Pie

New 30 Nov 2018 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 41 Comments

Re offcolor rituals: Burnt Offering is a mono-black spell from Ice Age that can produce black or red mana.

Usually if your example is from the early days of Magic, it’s not great color pie precedent.

Ice Age Trivia

New 28 Nov 2018 Asked by kmalsom 51 Comments

Hey Mark, today is my birthday and I started playing during Ice Age and my favorite color is white, so could you give me some trivia about Ice Age or the best removal spell of all time, Sword to Plowshares? Thank you and happy holidays!

The expression originated in the Bible in the Book of Isaiah. The flavor of the spell is that the targeted creature has given you their violent ways and has become a peaceful, nonviolent person.
Happy Birthday!
