Hat Synergies

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by old-planet 25 Comments

Hi Mark! With all this talk about hats, I was wondering... Why weren't "Brims" Barone or the hats matter archetype from Unfinity made backwards compatible with the only card caring about hats in Unstable, Goblin Haberdasher, which is mono-red?By the way, would the ability of Haberdasher be in pie for mono-black? I could always try to rule 0 it and convince my opponents that its colour identity is black and not red for my Brims commander deck =D

Brims is black/white because that’s the colors of the draft archetype in Unfinity. He’s the gold signpost. There are tons of factors that went into to choosing the colors for the archetype and synergy with an old card was low on the list.

Un-cards Casual Play Impact

New 08 Jan 2023 Asked by j-waffles 21 Comments

Do you believe the acorn/eternal divide in unfinity will further delegitimize existing silver-bordered cards in casual play? The fact that some Un-cards ARE going to be commander legal now seems like it will only further the notion that the other Un-cards are strictly off limits in Magic’s flagship format for casual play. Regardless of if they are “Un” for rules reasons (like Frankie peanuts or goblin haberdasher) or purely due to their border (as luck would have it or beast in show) or somewhere in between (host/augment), many players are already on the fence about allowing Un-cards, even in non-tournament play. By pointing out specifically which new Un-cards are “in-bounds”, people playing casually might feel even LESS inclined to allow for the “out-of-bounds” designs, like my sweet sweet elephant man Frankie.

I’ve heard it working both ways. Some groups finally play with some Un-cards and enjoy them, so they’re more willing to let people Rule 0 in others.

Squirrel Sticker Hat Definition

New 25 Jul 2022 Asked by wobbles 101 Comments

If you put a Squirrel sticker on top of a creature’s head, is it a hat?

No. Here’s the Unstable FAQ from Goblin Haberdasher:What counts as a hat?A hat is a garment worn on the head that’s not part of another garment. Hoodies, for example, are not hats. Items that only cover the face and not the top of the head, such as a face mask, are also not hats.A squirrel is not a garment, thus not a hat. There’s a sentence I haven’t ever had to write before.

Yes. Art stickers are additive. They don’t remove anything.

The Goblin Haberdasher Rule

New 07 Apr 2022 Asked by exarchofsechrima 74 Comments

Hi Mark! Un-rules question! If a character was, hypothetically, wearing strips of metal on her head twisted in the shape of a hat in her artwork, would that count as her wearing a hat for the purpose of Goblin Haberdasher? (I am of course referring to the new SL artwork of Breya, Etherium Shaper.)

A creature is considered to be wearing a hat even if that hat is made out of part of their own body as long as the object is shaped to resemble a hat which Breya’s head covering does do in the new art. As a corollary, a shapeshifter that shapeshifts part of their body into a hat, so they appear to have a hat, is “wearing a hat” for purposes of Goblin Haberdasher.

Atsushi and Goblin Haberdasher Interactions

New 17 Dec 2021 Asked by rtladnumber4 26 Comments

Hello Mark!I just saw the extended art version of Atsushi, Blazing Sky and I have to know, is that a hat that they are wearing? And would that mean the alt art version would get menace from Goblin Haberdasher while the standard/extended version doesn’t?Thank you!

I’ll have to talk to the creative team to understand what’s on Atsushi’s head, but maybe it’s a hat. Un-cards that care about a certain trait look specifically at the card in question, so yes, different art can result in different mechanical outcomes.

Shorecomber Crab Hat Dilemma

New 17 Apr 2021 Asked by the-haberdashery 61 Comments

Does Shorecomber Crab count as "wearing a hat" for the sake of Goblin Haberdasher? Haberdasher's first ruling says "A hat is a garment worn *on the head* that's not part of another garment." Shorecomber has a hat, but it's on a skull that it's also wearing, so while there is a garment worn on *a* head, it's someone else's head. Please, I need to know if my 0/4 crab friend has menace.

I’ll say it is wearing a hat.

No, the Skullclamp is not wearing a hat. Yes, it is a hat, but that’s not what the Habberdasher cares about.

Silver Border Rules

New 23 Feb 2018 Asked by overflowchute 51 Comments

Hey Mark, unrules question. I play Protean Raider, a creature with a hat in its art, and use its ability to copy Sagu Mauler, who is hatless. Since this is Unrules, the card still has a hat in its art even as a copy - does it have menace if I have Goblin Haberdasher out?

In silver border play, a card copying another card is considered to copy all attributes including art.

One of my favorite parts of answering Un-rules questions is how often they transcend rules and start to become philosophy questions. Is an animated hat “wearing” a hat? I would say yes, it is wearing its hat-ness for all to see. : )

Technically, the hat must be on in the art.
